    Many happy returns to @SprinkleOtter

My status - undecided.  Local charity shop has 8214 in the window at £75.  Given that to date the most I have spent on a second hand set is £2.50 this is quite a big leap.  It has been opened in the past so I don't know whether stickers have been applied or indeed if it is all there.

Plus we are on holiday this week so I'd prefer to have a bit of cash to take away.  Don't suppose it will still be there when we get back, but if it is I might see if they will let me take a look inside and then haggle!

Congrats @SprinkleOtter! Mostly on your birthday but also on achieving a positive like/comment ratio, it's not just the quantity but also the quality!

If its anything like sets in our local charity shops, its probably already gone! Rarely see anything LEGO like in them, so I tend to snap it up quickly. Missed out on #6253 recently for £15 because I hesitated!

Suddenly realising it is less than two months until Hallowe'en, and if I'm going to build a haunted house (with small Hs; I wish I'd bought that thing before it retired...) for my series 14 CMFs to put on display, I'd better start planning it soon... and finish sorting my collection. /story of my life

Some people have this Birthdays overshadowed by holidays, like Christmas or Easter. @SprinkleOtter has the once in a lifetime experience of having his overshadowed  by some bloke walking miles in the poring rain. Good luck, @Legoboy

Also, on a side note, I just found out I have more likes than posts...
    Happy Birthday!!

Nobody cares about some dumbass walking 100km in the rain ;) Well, maybe I few of us, but shhhhhhhh; his head is big enough already ;)

as long as someone is playing the song by Flanagan and Allen "Run Rabbit Run". as background sound to his 100km run. if he was dressed up in a rabbit costume. well you get the idea. :)

Your post prompted me to check my ratio, which is more than 3 to 1 for Likes to Posts ratio!

Though given I've only got around 250 posts so nothing to shout about :)

^ From what I recall, you post a lot of images @Recce - they tend to get more likes. Unless they're by me, in which case it's images everyone has seen loads already. Don't disparage yourself based on your post count, there's people on here with a huge number of posts, but don't really add value with a lot of them... ;-)

Picked up the little City Race boat #60114 in Sainsburys yesterday and let my daughter build it this evening.

Also been told we're off to Cardiff this weekend for the Roald Dahl 100yrs events....a trip to the LEGO shop has been approved!

    Insurance?

You might not have phone insurance, but unless your policy excludes it, it's no different to sitting on a laptop and may be covered by household insurance. Of course, the increase in premiums may not be worth it...

Some people claim for anything they think they can; others don't claim even when they should.
  • MaffyDMaffyD Member Posts: 3,535
^ my eldest daughter cracked her phone screen soon after getting it (secondhand, as we can't afford to give her a brand new iPhone - she might break it :-) and although it's covered by our gadget warranty, we weren't going to get it fixed straight away. It sets a dangerous precedent for future phone care. She's just now coming up to getting a new phone, and I'm pretty sure she'll take better care of it. Got to be cruel to be kind...

Her sister did a similar thing a few weeks later. Again, I'm not getting anyone a brand new phone if they can't keep them safe. She'll get a new one when she appreciates what happens when they don't look after the old one.

@William_Townsley - I'm sure your situation is completely different though!

Anyway, current Lego status is that I might be able to sit at a table for prolonged periods again! Will give it a try tomorrow!

There's no point in claiming off the house insurance. £100 excess. It's only £126 to fix. I would rather keep a claim for something else

It might be worth it to give a call to the maker of the phone. Some companies are willing to give out replacement stuff just to keep happy (returning) buyers.
  • William_TownsleyWilliam_Townsley Member Posts: 880
Nah Apple wouldn't give anything out for free. Anyway I'm calling them tomorrow to get it sent in for repair.

My pizzeria MOC kept falling off the place where I put it, so I added it to my road display.

It's a combination of #10036 Pizza To Go and #41092 Stephanie's Pizzeria. I got 41092 with this in mind, from the clearance that ended my dark ages. It helped me consider Friends, and the 3x3 plate was an idea whose time had come.

Credit card? A few cards still give 30/90 days accidental damage cover. Does yours? Most people who are covered don't know!

^ Agreed!  I would definitely check for accident coverage.  I'm surprises the carrier won't simply exchange the phone.

I agree with checking with your local carrier.  Also buy a good case for your phone.  I have an otter box defender although they aren't waterproof they work wonderfully in protecting your phone from drops.

Otter box.... If I ever get a real smartphone, I might have to get one and inscribe "sprinkle" on it...

Highly recommend the Otterbox.  I've had Blackberrys and Samsung Notes that I've never had to replace a screen, or have damaged despite numerous drops.

The plastic screen on the Defender is terrible - I usually remove it and get a piece of gorilla glass.  No air bubbles, either.

I have a screen protector for my new phone but am still shopping for a case. This phone was to replace one with a busted screen. Besides budget, it prevents using a phone in store for shopping around.

@William_Townsley that's crappy - I dropped my phone after 13 days as well, gorilla glas and it only slid of the sofa onto a parquet floor.

Tried my credit card insurance/house insurance/company I bought it from, nothing worked so bought a new phone with a flip case. (it was motog 3dgen and only 30 euros more to get a new one than to get it repaired). It's been going strong now but I remember being really really annoyed for such a silly cost. hope yourbudget leaves room for Lego soon!

Funny thing is when I went to America, I noticed that these otterbox type indestructible cases were all the rage over there. Everyone seemed to have one and when we sat in T-Mobile getting a tourist SIM, at least two people got them with their new phones - no questions asked. In the UK, I've only ever seen one or two.

FWIW, I've had 3 second-hand smartphones. My Galaxy Nexus had a simple fake leather wallet-type case. My Blackberry Q5 had the official BB flip case. My current Nexus 4 either has a simple 'bumper' type case or none at all (depending how I'm feeling). None of them has ever suffered any damage from everyday use or the odd drop. My N4 even sits in my pocket all day long with no screen protector - it's second hand and 4 years old and the screen is pristine.

I think the phone case/screen protector industry is probably just a big scam, preying off people's fears of  their own clumsiness. :-P

^^Another thumbs-up for Otterbox cases... I've got one on my SGS6 and, although I'm very careful with it, accidents do happen and I'd rather not have to deal with a broken phone...
