Wanted box 10179

Can anyone tell me where I might look to purchase the box only for set 10179???

Tried eBay, amazon, and simple imternet searches...

Any help is appreciated! thanks

BL has boxes for most sets, including #10179. Not cheap though.

This is nuts. Now if it was signed by every designer and cast member that travelled on board the MF I might think it was worth it. That or if it was totally filled with bricks.

- edit: only Lego bricks obviously!

Not so ridiculous; there are many "collectible" items that the packaging/box is worth more than the original RRP. In fact, there are many Lego items where the box is worth more than what was/is inside. Many people throw out the box, so it isn't inconceivable to have the box be more valuable than the item itself.

Agreed, it is not surprising especially when having the box shows you have cared more for the set if/when you sell it, no wonder they are valuable.

There are many people that do not care about the box or don't care to sell the set in the future, so why keep the box? Those people will probably sell their box to someone like @BeNov

I don't think that having the box necessarily means you cared more for the set itself than someone who didn't keep the box.  it might mean something.  it might not.

So why is there a premium for having the box? It gives the impression that the owner cares more than another that doesn't. It also means the set is more complete.

In my view, those that have their box are more likely to suffer an OCD of some description (like me) than someone who tossed their's out and that being the case, I would hope they would have looked after at least their manual if not just their bricks.

Like @graphite said, those that simply have a box but no bricks is a strange one.  Only a maniac would have a 1st Edition box available for sale if he were to receive a decent offer by PM.  ;)

Totally unrelated, I wonder how a bidding war would work here on Brickset? I would imagine you would set the time where the "auction" would end and then the last person who bid before the deadline would win. I would LOVE to see that live here.

That's an entirely different question than the comment I first responded to.

of course having a box is going to make the resale value greater than not having it. But that doesn't automatically mean the set itself was taken better care of than another set whose owner threw away the box, which was your original supposition. It may have been better cared for, it may not have. There isn't a direct correlation beteeem having a box and used set condition

And to think I used to keep ALL my boxes until my wife decided they were taking up too much space in the attice and dumped them all.

The car was completely full. Hundreds of the buggers.

The Box is valuable because, @Pitfall69 said, many throw them out. Supply and demand.
Now, there are also those that may have bricklink-ed the set, or got it another way (like eBay) who are 'completionists' and like having the box. Conversely there are those that realized there is value in the box, even though they do not need it(or perhaps do not have the space for it any longer) and decide to sell it.
Same goes with instruction books, there are a few instruction books out there that go for more than their sets as well.

According to @Istokg the set #321 Clowns from 1965, out of the box, is worth maybe $10 since it's mainly common parts. However, the box in good condition can go for $1000.

@BeNov in all seriousness I have a box that I would happily sell, but since I am in London I'm not sure how that would work, maybe a box within a box, meta shipping if you will. Happy to have a PM about it if you are interested.

Small / medium boxes get collapsed and stored carefully, whilst larger and / or more valuable sets remain intact!  Takes up a lot less space that way.

(I'm *really* OCD and even keep the boxes from sets that I've parted out / sold / traded some of the contents for.  I don't know why...)

If you really want the box it might just be cheaper to build a time machine, go back to 2007 and buy it sealed then sell the set and time machine to make a profit. ;)
