2017 Modular Building - "Celebrating Modular Buildings' 10th Anniversary!"

Well, those pictures confirm for me that the modular is just too small. I spent all my VIP points to grab one but it will be getting "super sized". The bakery/dentist will get about eight studs width (at least an extra row of windows), another level and reworked back for enclosed stairs. The blue building will get at least 8 studs to include another row of windows. Not sure at this time if I'm going to give it another floor or not. I might make one side or the other into a corner depending on how I work it into my layout. Stay tuned!

^ Ikea Billy bookcase. Wide enough to fit two and a half modulars plus a bit of space on the side. Around one stud shy of three full modulars, annoyingly.

The quick solution is getting 2 sets so you can instantly double the size of all the 3 buildings.

Flanking with smaller buildings is the quick fix. I would like to see it displayed with the Detectives Office on the bakery side and the laundry mat / Brick Bank on the Cafe side.

The quick solution is getting 2 sets so you can instantly double the size of all the 3 buildings.

That's the basic plan, but I'm going to re-work it in LDD first. Another thing I just noticed is that the florist shop just disappears into the back-ground when there is not a direct light on it. That building should be the bright color so you can see it under normal lighting circumstances. 

One other impression. I was in Lyon, France last summer visiting family. This modular reminds me of the old section of town with it's 6ish story tall 15th century buildings and small court yards abounding. Very cool place to visit.

It looks really big and impressive to me! I'd agree that it needs some careful lighting or maybe swapped our colours for the florist, though, for display...

So far, no extra polybag (similar themed, I know the Batwing is free with a +$35 purchase) with this set, correct? The listing in Amazon includes #40140, but I'm guessing it's just from a specific seller and not Amazon (which still does not have it listed for sale by them).

Can we see the price of sand green 1xX bricks plummet because of AS?
I for one would hope so, only 1x1, 1x1 with side stud, 1x2 and 1x4..... No 1x6 though :(.

Just looked on BL... OK, they are cheap already.

I really love the reviews from jang. When I can't sleep in the night I watch his videos. After that I still fail to fall asleep but at least I had a good time!

I ginned this AS Blue Building in LDD. It's 6 studs wider and one story taller. More to follow.

Here is the back side. The red parts are placeholders for parts not available in LDD. I was surprised to find that the 2x2 turntable is not in LDD which is why I didn't re-create the 45 degree section.

it is. maybe it appears as a 2x2 plate if the 2 components are the same color.

@ecmo47 the classic 2x2 turntable? It is in there, you need to go into extended mode, it's in two parts like the rocker bearing & plate (rocking) 1x2, it's in the 28 group, the symbol looks like a string spool.

Thanks for the tip, guys. I did finally found it was a little frustrating that I cannot change it's color from red. Still odd that such an old part is not part of the "normal" LDD parts selection.

You can change any brick to any color in extended mode. Just use the paint bucket tool.

There was a glitch that occurred at one point last year where the colour selection tool wouldn't work, mayhaps the first time you tried it when the glitch was active.

Here is the Baker/Florist side. The Baker is 4 sides wider and obviously taller. The florist shop is 6 studs wider which leads to a couple problems that I haven't fully solved. One is the shelter roof made of buckets. I will have to make a Parisian Cafe style roof. The other is the trim above and below the hammers is made with the 1x8 extended slide rail. I cannot fill in the additional 6 stud length. Anyway, I like the overall look. These look like "real" building! Next steps is to scrub the parts lists and see what extra parts I will need not included in 2x10255.

I thought it was great to see the developmental process of these products. It is always very cool to see how the sets evolve and the stories behind the sets.

I am so glad Fire Brigade came out as it is, the one in the back does not appeal to me.

The video was great.  Sharing prototype set designs is extremely rare.  I grabbed some screen shots for anyone that wants to mod their sets to the "original" designs.

We got the most shots of the original green grocer design, with an interesting story about how the first interior detail came to be.

Next was the Red Market Street.  Jamie clearly considers this a modular so to me that's pretty definitive! :)  There was a white version too, but there was no good shot and it looked like the details weren't really that interesting anyway.   I like the use of the octopus element!

Last but not least, towards the end of the video, Jamie has arranged tons of bits on the table.  I wonder if there are any hints in here about the next modular.   Here are a couple that I thought were interesting...

The red Market Street is interesting, especially the dark green bottom and red upper. I had considered building it at one time, maybe I'll mix it up a bit this way. Although it doesn't fit into my LUGs "theme," so I'll likely never build Modulars again since none of my styled buildings fit into their theme.

It is interesting to see prototype elements/designs make their way into other Modulars. It makes sense. there are only so many build styles. They don't show it in the video, but the instructions for CC also shows an alternate build which lends a design to the brownstone in Pet Shop.

I like the old style Fire Brigade also. That would be interesting. And part of me has wanted to build only facades to decrease brick usage. That looks interesting.

I've been hoping for a couple of things from LEGO in regard to Modulars.

1) More streetscape vendors/scenes to work with a downtown setting (Flower Cart, Balloon Cart & Fountain promos were great - but only available for a very limited time)

2) One free instructions download for an additional small modular (thinking a 16x32 baseplate size) that combines parts from the specific Creator sets launched that year. LEGO has a history of doing this on occasion and a nice way to celebrate 10 years.

On the subject of prototype elements of the modulars, the historical products section of the Creator Expert site has some cool behind-the-scenes details I found interesting:

• The Cafe Corner's Dark Red roof and Transparent Red hotel sign were inspired by feedback from a LEGO fan during development
• The Green Grocer was inspired by San Francisco houses and shops. Kinda makes all the whining about the Fire Brigade looking "too American" seem even sillier in hindsight.
• The apartment in the Pet Shop set was originally going to be "more ‘peachy’ using a color normally used for minifigure flesh tones". I'm guessing they mean 18 Nougat (Flesh on BrickLink)? However, it was changed after it got "mixed responses internally". Alas!

Like I mentioned the other day, there is a need for 16x32 modulars to be released along with the 32x32 modulars. I believe this will add variety and allow for different shops or housing buildings to be added to most or our growing towns. 

It's also really interesting to see the prototypes and to see what type of designs were used and which were reused for other modulars.

I certainly agree with you there. There is this huge gap between Creator buildings for $30-40 and the large Modular price point of $160+. Something in the $100 range would be great as a stepping stone.

I get Assembly Square as a special 10th anniversary set, but what will the next one cost, $170 or $180 likely. That's getting to be a bit too much in my opinion.

^ This can be easily solved. Just buy 2 Creator sets and combine them. :-D

The 2nd wave of the 2017 Creator houses look good. Lego is on a roll here.

I agree that they are on the right track but I'm not a fan of the facade look. At least for houses. I really wish they would go back to the complete house look, like
