What non-IP, non-big bang theme do you expect/hope (realistically) to be the next?

I'd like a time travel theme. It should have just one type of time machine instead of a bunch of weird time vehicles, and the sets should be buildings or locations from just about any and every time period. The main characters could visit the past and future to... do stuff?. It would be a good way to get interesting builds from genres that wouldn't support a whole theme.
I always think back to the quirky Time Cruisers theme when this subject comes up. And I think the LEGO Movie sets kind of fit this mold, as do the Nexo Knights a little bit. If this was done with Steampunk influence - it could resonate with kids and adults.

^ Don't forget the stud shooters,  flick-fire missles and super-jumpers.

I think the whole 'PC' controversy is blown out of proportion; as a Mexican, I would not be offended if they brought Johnny Thunder back and had him have adventures in 'Aztec Land' (heck, that's what I hope they do next)...However, I would be offended if the figures shown signs of 'crossing the river', being 'lazy', or 'drunk', or if Mexicans were included in the LEGO City sets and they were only portraying criminals.

I would also like a short run of sets for an amusement park/stock show, or something like that.

Or, maybe a run of sets involving Hollywood movie studios and movie making, or of some singers. I would love for them to release a special edition Michael Jackson's Thriller set.

Johnny Thunder is going to be the good guy. They have to have some bad guys, so who is going to portray them?

Why would there be Mexicans in City? They don't do nationalities or race in City.

A Roman themed set would be great! Can't wait for the Caligula and the horse Incitatus;)

My definition of what is (or isn't) a "big bang" theme is simple - is there a cartoon series to accompany it? If there is, then it's a "big bang" theme; if there isn't, it isn't. Simple :-)

As for the next non-ip/non-"big bang" theme, I'd love to see a return to Classic Space, particularly something with a back story around exploration and adventure. Unfortunately, if we do get a new Space theme, it's not going to happen quite like that. Lego's current philosophy of encouraging conflict-based roleplay wouldn't allow it; they feel the need to always provide "good guys" & "bad guys", in conflict with each other. But, as long as there are spaceships involved, I'll be happy.

I think it would be cool if they did Space Rangers. Some nefarious group is trying to capture rare beasts from other worlds to put into a private zoo, the Space Rangers must stop them. There could be some pretty sweet brick built monsters to rescue, and it would be set in space.

Maybe I've been playing too much Pokémon Go. What I'm picturing in my head is pretty neat though. Kind of a combination of the Dinos theme (the vehicles with nets, cages) and space. I'm picturing brick built monsters with Mixel articulation points. Set in space there could be quite a variety of creatures (volcano, swamp, ice, space, pretty much anything).

Like I mentioned, it would be offensive if they did what I said, if all of a sudden figures that looked of Hispanic descent were the ones portraying criminals...which is also why I said that things are being blown out of proportion.

As for Johnny Thunder...the fact that almost all the time 'natives' are portrayed as savages and 'bad guys', they should not be the enemies. They can make a generic bad guy, Marvel movies are full of them :p (except Loki).

Sounds fine in theory, but Ultra Agents had a bit of crossover into the Ninjago cartoons if I remember correctly, which blurs the definition.

I think some people get too caught up in defining and labelling stuff unnecessarily and the whole "Big Bang themes" is part of that.

Sign me up for this but in a fantasy type setting rather than space - it's very much the only way I can imagine a castle theme being done alongside all the current offerings

It is universally acceptable for anyone with a British accent to be a villain.  No matter their ethnicity or gender.

(And probably an American with a cowboy hat and exotic mustache.)

I'd like to see a realistic Mars Mission theme; something that would be more reminiscent of "The Martian" rather than "Life on Mars". I want to see habitat domes, mars rovers, etc

I'd love to see a movie where the bad guys have English accents, but not your typical 'English accent bad guy'. I want to see a Brummie, a Scouser, someone people from Cornwall and Yorkshire, and a Geordie (obviously). Feel free to add any other regional English accents that are hard to understand for outsiders :-)

^ They weren't bad guys, but that sounds like the cast of Auf Wiedersehen Pet.

The extent of the Ultra Agents "crossover" was character designs from Ultra Agents being repurposed for Ninjago characters (they didn't even share the same names).

Of course, while Ultra Agents doesn't seem to have been considered a Big Bang theme internally, it had a bit more of a story and multimedia component than many other non-Big Bangs (especially in the second year when it was used to test out the App Brick concept).

In any case, the term "Big Bang" is really only an internal designation by Lego for new theme launches that Lego invests heavily in (for promotion, media, etc.) from the outset. As such it is relevant when discussing Lego's own marketing strategies for themes, but less relevant in discussions of how themes should be categorized by fans.

Maybe a 'science lab' theme, with monsters and robots and such.

I wonder if they refer to the Disney Princess, Cinderella Castle and Disney CMFs as 'Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang" theme.

    (Internally, of course.)

I'd personally love an exploration space theme - planet/space base, a couple of starships, and landing party, and then we can have ploy bags like spacewalks...

EDIT: A SERIES of landing parties! That way we can have multiple planet environments, all with different figures/uniforms.

Here's another idea, how about an Underwater theme?  With an undersea base, submarine, etc. etc.

    And a lighthouse of course

I know they just had the Deepsea line, but pretty much all of it was above the water sets.

^Yeah an Atlantis/Aquanauts style theme has been off the shelves long enough to be a novelty again. Give it a fresh color scheme and story and it would be good to go.

I for one welcome our new TechnoViking overlords. In general, I like the idea of more mythology-oriented stuff - also, didn't someone find pictures of more fantastical monsters/creatures in some Nexo Knights comic or book that might suggest plans in that direction for next year?

    Firefly... Sigh.
Why does Firefly get all the love but Dollhouse doesn't? That show was so freaking Awesome!!!!!!
  • catwranglercatwrangler Member Posts: 1,894
Well, Dollhouse did get two seasons - I haven't watched it, but I wonder if it got a bit more room to fulfil its potential. Firefly had the whole mythic "cut off in its prime/what could have been" thing going on because of the cancellation...

Oh...no firefly comics from Dark Horse to continue the story like Buffy season 8?
  • catwranglercatwrangler Member Posts: 1,894
Eventually there were comics (not sure if they continued the storyline Buffy season 8 style), but what initially happened was that it was cancelled without even finishing the season in the US, which sparked a huge fan campaign to bring it back. According to Fanlore the DVD sales of the series were what ensured the movie, Serenity, could be made. But it's still probably the first show people will mention if you ask what was cancelled too early...

not sure what buffy season 8 could be since they pretty much won at the end of season 7 and buffy went in europe to live a more normal live. in another hand, the end of angel was frustrating.

I like to pretend that Buffy ended with Season 3. Nothing is as good as Season 2.

Also, and this is an unpopular opinion, that musical episode can take off. Blargh.
  • FauchFauch Member Posts: 2,679
except season 3. but I think it went downhill (or rather dawnhill?) at season 5...
  • LostInTranslationLostInTranslation Member Posts: 5,572
Buffy season two was emotionally really strong for the Buffy/Angel romance and the othee high school drama stuff  (plus if course Spike and Dru) but some of my favourite episodes come from later seasons, one of which is the musical. (I feel an off topic Buffy thread coming on!)

BTW what are people's thoughts on the upcoming Flash/Supergirl musical episode crossover extravaganza ? Sounds like they may be going down the same route as Buffy in thst "the villain made them do it!" and Joss Whedon is even rumoured to be involved.  Could work,  IMHO. I know a lot of people just hate musicals with a passion though.

(Since Whedon isn't helming 'Infinity Wars', he may have some time on his hands.)

There's a mega crossover between all 4 arrowverse shows coming up in November as well. Can't wait for that and can't wait for the musical episode. Now just need to catch up on them all!

Where's the off topic Buffy thread? Between Xena: Hebrew Princess & Buffy being constantly in rotation on Netflix at our house, it's like 1999 all over again TV wise.

Behind on Flash & Green Arrow.

On Flash, Barry just met Jay & Zoom
Arrow, Black Canary & Speedy just dug up Black Canary.
Haven't even started the Tomorrow show.

Maybe an ancient/medieval theme based on China or Japan would provide a historical fix while appealing to the PC crowd, but would that be considered too similar to Ninjago?
