Speculation on the upcoming Death Star

We're getting closer to the release of the new Death Star, and so I thought it was about time we started discussing it. I expect a display model with very few, if any, minifigures, since we already had a player "ucs" set in the form of assault on hoth. Anyone else have any ideas on what we might get?

Im gonna laugh if it ends up being a micro fighter or something.

honestly though, I would love to get pretty much #10188 with an outer shell of some sort. I also think with the long line up of large sets this year we could easily be seeing a 5,000+ part range and have StarWars take back largest licensed model on the market over taking GBHQ. The minifigure selection should also be interesting, if they are going to try to top 10188, 24 is a hard number to beat, especially with how much more production goes into figures these days vs. 2008.

My fear is that it's gonna be the same model with updated figures and some tiny build updates.

If it includes more than 24 minifigures, then my wallet is going to suffer.

I'd be highly surprised if it is a display piece and not a playset.  10188 has to be up there with one of the best selling sets of all time, seeing as it was available for like 8 years - they wouldn't keep it on the market so long if it wasn't selling.  I'm picturing it to be similar in size and scope to 10188, but with updated pieces, builds, and especially minifigs.  The minifigs from 10188 are so dated now.

My hope is that (and I get that this is a long shot and very unlikely) the main structure of the build is of a similar design to the original but that the scenes that are included are built to be removable and that separate scene builds from the different films are sold as add ons so you can swap them about and have the Death Star from which ever film you like.

Back in the land of reality, my thinking is that as stated above that it will be an updated #10188 as I think the playability factor will be quite important to TLG.
Due to the close proximity of the upcoming film it may have a few changes to incorporate scenes that could possibly be in it.

The only thing I really don't want to see is for it to be separate scene builds, with minor characters, two stormtroopers, a speeder bike, a flick fire missile super laser and possibly a blast door as I may have to sell a kidney and buy the old one.

that piece count would put the price point at $600 or more. Hard to see that happening.  I would be shocked - shocked! - if the piece count was higher than 10188

It's definitely going to be to scale with the minifigs and not a tiny plaything like the previous version. It'll have at least a hundred million pieces. Better start saving up some money folks!

If that's so the price given an average of 10c per piece would be $10mil + Disney tax = $20mil. Also there would probably only be one produced so after market prices need to be factored in for a total of ~$40,000,000. Feesable.

bobabricks - expensive, but worth every penny. Especially when you see a UCS Millenium Falcon sitting inside of it in all its splendor!

Probably smaller than #10188 but a similar price.

I cant see it being small than 10188, what would be the point of taking it off sale only to replace it with something smaller. I can see it being an updated 10188 but I think they would at least add a bit more detail adding to the piece count. I could even see them making it a little larger or adding half an outer shell. I am hoping for 5,000+ when you think how much more popular Lego is now than ten years ago and how many more AFOL there are now it is a surprise that we have not seen a new benchmark in how large a set Lego will make.

Because it had become very good value (relatively, for lego) as it had been out so long. So for the same reason that Mars bars shrink over time, to keep the price point the same but increase the effective cost to the consumer.

But I hope people don't have a Mars bar from 2008 open and displayed on their shelf and are wondering if its worth getting one from 2016. Or that people will see the Mars bar from 2008 was bigger and better and will buy one from ebay even if its open!

I doubt lego care too much about selling a new Death Star to people with the old one. There are enough new fans that will want the new one.

I also doubt that people will buy an old (retired) Death Star at ebay for let's say 1.5x RRP or more, when they can get a slightly smaller one with better / updated minifigures for the original RRP, if lego produce a similar play-style model.

I dunno if it has to be smaller and more expensive. big ben and ghostbuster HQ have good price per piece. of course they don't have the disney tax...

Like this? (from a fair earlier this year at Pasadena)

I so want to build something like this.

Here's how big that things was:

It had several scenes from EP4:
    - Obi-Wan deactivating tractor beam
    - Luke, Han & Chewie at the holdings blocks
    - Trash compactor

Plus funny scenes like a cafeteria, Darth Vader on a bicycle, and an recreation/arcade area.
    That is awesome

^Saw it in person at Pasadena show too. Pics don't come close to how awe struck I was when looking at it in person. Is twice as big as how it looks. And seeing the UCS Falcon inside of the bay is like seeing a dream realized in front of my eyes.

We will see! Even if it is just an updated #10188, I personally wouldn't mind as I missed that one...

On the other hand, a pure display set would also be good, as I display rather than play.

    Basically, I'm easy to please...

I am fascinated to see how people will respond to #75159 The Death Star when it is revealed, although I do not know when that will be. I have seen it and think opinion will be divided.

Depends on what kind of "UCS" set it is if it's like Insult on Hoth or an update on the old set it probably won't go over to well. If it's like Ewok Village, or Cloud City it has the possibility of being a great set.
  • gmonkey76gmonkey76 Member Posts: 1,833
Basically I'd like to see something along the lines of the old Kenner playset.

Can you give any details if it's based on Starkiller Base or the original Death Star from Rogue One?

@CapnRex101 - Now that you have teased the Lego Universe with a sighting of the most anticipated SW of 2016 can you say if it "looked in your personal opinion" bigger than 10188 i.e piece count?
  • CapnRex101CapnRex101 Administrator Posts: 2,364
@Fireheart - I don't actually know the piece count but suspect it will be a little higher than #10188 Death Star.

Probably not so maybe "in your personal opinion" whether it was awesome?

Now we have you talking, would you be able to answer a few questions:

1: Is it the original Death Star?
2: Is it a play set?
3: Is it a whole sphere?
4: Is there an outer shell?
5: How many minifigures are included?

Also could you recreate it with your spare parts and post it in the next 5 minutes before I start work? :)

    Thanks

Why do I get the feeling it won't be a sphere at all, but instead a 'playset' of part of the interior?
