(Looks like someone is in the market for a UCS-scale R2-D2, and the newest Batmobile.)
Where's Tinkerbell?!?!
Longer:
I need to get another bookcase for my home office. It will hold almost exclusively Lego. The basic requirements are glass doors, outside dimensions of ~36" wide (to fit between two windows), and ~14-16" deep and 70-75" tall. I think I've gotten it down to 2 (or 3) choices that will fit with other furniture in the room (which is at the front of our house and not a dedicated Lego room, so it does matter, for better or worse).
My collection is nearly all SW (mix of UCS and other), Modulars, Architecture skylines, and Ideas sets.
The inside width is within 1" or so for each, around 32-33".
Choice 1: A stack of barrister bookcases. Pros: I can add another shelf or two to the top of the stack later, inside depth is 14" so it can display some wider/deeper sets. Cons: No way to adjust the height of the individual shelves. 13" is the max height of anything in the case. Any sort of lighting will have to be battery-powered, I think.
Choice 2: A traditional bookcase with swinging glass doors. Pros: I can adjust the height of each shelf to accommodate taller sets. I should be able to run thin wires for lighting. Con: The shelves are 11.75" deep, which is enough for a 32x32 so it can fit modulars, but not as many SW ships.
Choice 3 (probably out): Ikea Hemnes Glass-Door Cabinet. I have a Hemnes sliding glass door cabinet in the room already, and I really like it, but the taller case's reviews are pretty poor compared to the reviews of the one I have. It's much cheaper than the other two, but I worry A LOT about the reviews that say a shelf just fell. Falling shelves and lego are a bad combination!
I don't think the other usual Ikea options will work with the rest of the room.
I do have other shelves in the room that can display items up to ~14" tall and so far am putting my really tall stuff on top of the cabinets I have.
I had also thought about a more subtle approach and might just put a LEGO logo square in the bracket near the front where the dangerous goods placard would go.
Used many rolls of that Mayka block tape in dark gray and positioned all my numbered-series CMFs chronologically, leaving gaps for the (many) I'm still missing from series 1-11. They may be too exposed, but being above the windows at least they shouldn't get much natural light and the earlier ones are all in the hallway. Plus, they are kid safe unless kids start throwing things at them.
Not a major project compared to some here, but I'm happy with the results. And I still have room for another 5 series or so.
I wouldn't want to dust that many exposed minifigures, though…
Two more words - spider webs.
And yes, dust! And a battery-powered leaf blower would not work on those figs...
Three words - skunk butt rug.
Plus, I'm not that 'hairy.'
It is pinned top and bottom using the angled snot plates behind the poster frames
Now just need to bricklink some of the parts in matching colours, and cycle out the Halloween figures.
Does your household insurance cover it outside?
”They’re great because I can put my daughters sets down at ground level and she can access them easily and I can display my collection of smaller display only sets at the top, where the shelves are thinner,”
That’s SMART thinking, like that!
Looking forward to a different house.
I may ask a friend to make me up something simple, but if there’s something already available and a decent price, that’s much easier!
Some of the options mentioned in earlier threads aren’t available, unfortunately!
or even if someone has plans I could have my friend follow? My biggest concern with my asking my friend is going to be sourcing glass and/or plexi for the top and sides and making sure all the dimensions work right.
A recent solution has been to buy 2 of these and put them together...

I may or may not have bought a cabin on 20 acres that has a lot of extra storage in the loft...
real shame the Sammanhang isn’t a foot longer! That would be excellent at $80! I’ll see what 2x of that looks like. Might be awfully big for a coffee table.
Some of the custom options run >$1k, which is both reasonable and crazy at the same time!
All in all I’m pretty pleased to have the upgrades finished - now to choose what to build next!
