B&N was clearancing some Nexo Knights over the weekend, with the member discount I got the sets I was missing from the last wave at 35% off (25 plus 10 for member).  i was surprised the member discount applied but it was on the sticket itself.
  • AstrobricksAstrobricks Member Posts: 5,566
^ Just pointing out a common mistake. Unless your B&N does it differently than the ones around here, 25% off plus the 10% member discount is not 35% off. They apply the 10% discount to the price after the 25% is taken off, so the total discount is only 32.5%.
    Example: $100 x 0.75 = $75. $75 x 0.9 = $67.50.

Looks like the clearance is at 75% if your local store has any Angry Birds stuff left

    This is correct.

Moreover, the "savings" you can add to the final savings is what you get from paying less taxes.

    9% sales tax for $100 = $9
    9% sales tax for $67.50 = $6.08 ($2.92 less)

And this savings ($ amount) will be different depending on tax rates.

Bunch of assorted stuff at 50% online and in-store.  Not much left online, but go through ebates for 10% cashback.  I found most in-store...Nexo Knights, some DC Girls, Friends, City, and Super Heroes.  #41321 is a pretty new Friends set that doesn't even have the inventory up on BL yet.  Happy hunting.

I just put in a reservation request for 2 DC Superhero Girls sets that my store is the only one in the area that has them in stock. Fingers crossed that they confirm before Amazon ships the ones I ordered earlier at less of a discount!

Thank you @elspankdog! I managed to get 3 of the 4  DC Super Hero Girls sets I still needed at 50% off + my member discount in store. That last one was inexplicably not on sale. Darn that Wonder Woman minidoll for making me start collecting this theme!

Before you buy any Lego, buy your gift card first!!!

I ran across the same deals today...the most expensive set on the shelves for 50% off was the #70623 Ninjago Destinys Shadow...then a couple of the City themed sets #60149 & #60121.
    But some other smalls:
    #40203 Vampire seasonal  $4.47
    #41147 Anna's Snow Adventure.  $8.97
    #41321 Snow Resort Off-Roader

One of my local stores had a sign saying 30% off selected sets, which turned out to include SW and TLBM. With member discount I was able to get the Ultimate Batmobile plus the two Freemaker ships for less than $200.

B&N near me (Galleria) had all SW LEGO except BB-8 at 30% off, but BB-8 was the only Last Jedi first wave set they had. Picked up the Tracker I, Quadjumper, and Republic Tank.

They also had the DC Superhero Girls High School, Kryptomite Factory, and Bumblebee Helicopter at 50% off.

Thanks for the heads up guys, was able to get the last #70917 in the store for $92 and change out the door!

(@eddiew it appears to be part of the sale, although my store only had one, so you might want to head over asap!)

A local BN is going out of business.

The discount is/was at 40% off all Lego with additional 10% if you're a member.

They were cleaned out during Black Friday.
  • JenniJenni Member Posts: 1,390
@jmeninno I don't think mine was, it was a small sign on the LEGO shelves with no indication of which sets were covered. There is a clearance sale in another part of the store. I think it's more like the 25% off selected sets sale earlier in the year.

Thanks for these updates. Just snagged #70917 for 40% off (10% came from member discount). Not a bad deal at all

Not sure if it will last until Sunday or not. But if there are specific items you are looking for, I would suggest checking online for in store availability. They will hold the item behind the counter for you for three days. Then you can pay in store with your member discount.

Unless it's clearance, they only hold those for one day. That policy screwed me out of a 50% off Final flight of Destiny's bounty once.

So, I went to a different B&N today than yesterday when I got the sale in the hopes of picking up some of the large Last Jedi sets... and found out that this does not appear to be a chain wide promotion.  The store I went to today had no idea what I was talking about, and nothing on their calendar for it. (I was really sad because they had the First Order Star Destroyer too, and I would have LOVED to get the ~35% discount+member discount on it!)

I think I misinterpreted BrickByBrick's comment, so my reply was unnecessary. I haven't arranged for in store pickup of a clearance item before, but the heads up is a good one. Thanks!

You can check store stock and the actual store pricing online, find the item and click on "Want it today? Check Store availability".

I am glad you said that, because apparently my B&N has their Last Jedi sets in a different area than their other sets.  Went back in and was able to get the Resistance Bomber for about 72$, which is great.  Sadly, also found out that (unsurprisingly) the First Order Star Destroyer is not included in the promotion.

The deal this week on Lego Batman Movie and Lego Star Wars is pretty decent.  Its signed in store as 30% off regular, 40% off for members and includes most, but not all, new sets too.  Biggest issue is it being picked over already.  It looks like BB-8 is exempt from the sale.  I am trying to finish off most of the Lego Batman Movie series and this is a great way to get some of the best prices you are going to see, except maybe for the highly random YMMV Walmart sales.

Again, 30% off plus member discount is not 40% off. Read your receipt if you doubt this.

^This. You would get 10% off of the discounted price (70%), so .10 x .70 = .07. So that would be an additional 7%. The total discount would be 37%. Still significant, though.

And member discount off of a 50% off item only gets you an additional 5% off.  Barnes and Noble be shady like that.

I don't think it's shady; it's just how math works. If something is now half the price it used to be, there's no reason to get 10% off a previous and therefore irrelevant price that no longer exists.

    Gotcha.

The whole 10% off of 50% thing...
  • jmeninnojmeninno Member Posts: 1,216
To be clear, an additional 10% off via member discount, off of an item which is already 50% off, is really only an extra 5% off.  0.1*0.5 = 0.05.  Q.e.d.
  • 77ncaachamps77ncaachamps Member Posts: 2,442
    Using a concrete example:

    $100 set, 50% off is now...$50

    10% membership off $50 is $5, so...

    $50 - $5 = $45 (pre-tax)

Of course, everyone is forgetting another important variable: Unless you live in a state with no sales tax, you are also saving the tax on the additional five percent discount. So, in the example above, if you live in a state with 7% sales tax, you would pay $45 + $3.15 tax = $48.15. As opposed to $50 + $3.50 tax = $53.50. That's an additional savings of 35 cents, which makes all the difference!
