Individual stores have more or less problems with theft. One of the B&Ns I go to regularly in a well-off suburb has spider wraps on pretty much every Lego set over $50.

I was just at my store and they had 2 of the Saturn V sets out on the shelf.

Also found it amusing that their supply of polybags were in individual plastic anti-theft cases.
LOL. I guess I should be thankful that mine still keeps them unguarded :P

My local B&N is odd in their approach to anti-theft. Same thing that some of the higher value sets (not necessarily larger sets) are free and clear on the open shelves while some of the smaller/cheaper sets are all anti-thieved up. I guess it makes sense that the cheaper sets tend to be smaller, and thus easier to swipe without notice. But still...

If you have kids, sign them up for the Kids club and get a 30% off coupon that works online or instore that also is good for Lego.

    I know.

some BNs have the big boxes with the spider alarms, some don't.

if it can't be shoved down your pants or in a sweatshirt, then it doesn't get swiped.

but they do have the annoying magnetic tag on them.

I's just too bad 25% Educator Discount doesn't work on them.

But 10% Membership does, I believe.

I was able to use the educator discount on Batman sets......they do not list any Lego exclusions this time.

Hmmm... I wonder if this can be stacked with clearance at any point. Or maybe on a Saturn V whenever it comes back in stock. I've always been under the impression that it can't be used on LEGO.

Any way to see which sets the 30% coupon works on? I've tried in on a few and none have worked.

I bought Ninjago CMFs and the Educator discount did not work, not sure if this is true of larger sets. YMMV

That's surprising since it mentioned in the email Lrgo was excluded.
I'll try it and report back.

Can an educator get me some architecture sets at 25% off as they are under hobbies? :)

I was referring to the last time they did educators appreciation (with the Batman sets). If you saw my later post I figured out that they did exclude Lego this time. :( Too bad.

^ B&N is a good place to look for retired sets at RRP (-10% if you're a member), especially architecture sets.

Just for yucks I called five stores today looking for the #21309 Saturn V and the #21310 Old Fishing Store. Most of the people I talked to said they couldn't even get the Saturn V to show up on their computer (this despite the fact that I bought my one copy at a B&N back when they first came out).

However, two stores had just received the Old Fishing Store. I went to one and picked it up along with the #70906 Joker Lowrider and #70905 Batmobile which were on a 30% off clearance table. It turns out they were not supposed to be on clearance, but the manager gave me the 30% off (in addition to my member discount), so yay me!

Double member discount this weekend 9/21-24, not available on "select LEGO products", whatever that means.

My local B&N store rang up an Ninjago Movie set for me and it took the 20% FYI

I picked up today the #21310 Old Fishing Store for an unintentional 30% off, and #70618 Destiny's Bounty for 20% off. They had to manually input the 20% discount for Lego sets over $100. The attendant made a mistake on #21310, giving me the original 10% members discount and applying an additional 20%. I didn't notice the mistake until I got home.

Went into the B&N today and saw the #21309 Saturn V on the shelve.  One of the workers said I was 'lucky' because she had just put out about 3-4hours earlier.  Store also had 5-6 of the seasonal Halloween #40203.

Saw a Fortrex on clearance, got a 10% membership discount on it...but also saw it taped. Hoping for the best, I snagged it for $45.

Alas, it was missing the character bags: 1 and 6.

sucks. But I gambled and lost...

How did the Ninjago build go? I couldn't make the late afternoon timeframe.
  • fizicystfizicyst Member Posts: 72
Took my kids to the build. It was supposed to start at 4:00, we arrived at 3:30 and by 3:35 they were setting up the table. 30 kids were around the table by 3:40 and the person started pulling out bins with just a handful of pieces in each. No bags, no line, no clue...only two sets of instructions. I took a pic on my phone of the instructions and my kids managed to get the pieces they needed to build oneeach. It was a mess. By 4:00 there were like 20 kids waiting and no pieces left.

Ha, we got there early, kids running all over the store (was a crazy time)... anyhow, they started at 4, but there was a sign-up list (We didn't know about this, and weren't on it).  We still got the set based on there being enough to go around (1 each per kid).  We did get everything in a bag, but instructions would have been nice (I think we had two sets of instructions on the table, but I saw they had some black and white ones that never left the box - and sticker sheets).  I took a photo of the instructions but it's not great.  I'll post, and if anyone has a better one...(I took it above someone's shoulders, as the tables were beyond full of people).

Clearance has gone to 50%. My store had a bunch of Angry Birds sets. I only picked up a King Pig Castle for ~$37 after member discount and kid's club coupon.
  • JooTogJooTog Member Posts: 945
I picked (50% off) two #75826 King Pig's Castle for "castle" parts. I also got another #75825 Piggy Pirate Ship because I really like that ship ;-)

At my local B&N they did not have any other LEGO sets on clearance.

Anyone else notice this trend? Local stores around me mostly have removed the Architecture sets from their shelves. It may not be restricted to Lego; the other architecture toys seem to be missing too (except for a small display of Nano blocks). When I have asked about the Lego sets, they say they have them in the back and will check for me if I have a particular set in mind. I was thinking they might just be rearranging the stores, but it's been weeks now and the sets haven't come back out.

@Astrobricks I noticed a similar thing at the B&N up here in Duluth.  I had been collecting Architecture sets for a couple years, but in about 2015 I stopped to focus on other Legos.  I recently started getting back into it (couple weeks ago) and, remembering a decent selection at B&N, went in to check it out.  They were in the midst of re-flowing the collectibles/popculture/game section (where the architecture sets normally are).  Once they finished, they had clearanced out all the non lego Architecture sets and reduced the Lego sets to one end cap across from the board game aisle.  Not much room, probably half the sets.  I didn't see any of the Lego Architecture Studio sets, I hope those didn't go clearance and I missed out on them!  I have always wanted one of those..... but only for the right price.

I have seen B&N always having architecture sets that are retired (#21011, #21015, #21023...). Apparently they don't sell out and linger for a while. That maybe the reason they are changing the way they handle them. I visited a couple of weeks ago and they still had them on display. I hope they don't change because if you can't get one on sale, B&N is the last place to get them at RRP or less.

Or even worse, kinda like what @mak0137 alluded to, they're realizing the potential of selling retired sets at an premium.

I've never seen them sell sets above RRP. I'd guess that they've realized stuff sits on their shelves too long and are slimming down their selection. I was glad to get several retired sets last year (and not just Architecture) at 10% discount with membership, and even deeper discounts during clearance. But they haven't had much on clearance this year. I'm hoping for some good Black Friday/cyber Monday deals this year.

^They told me last time it usually excludes the licensed stuff like Star Wars, but there was an old Hoth set in my store that I grabbed and I think the discount took. The Ninjago pieces came up 20% off too.
