What are the most OUTRAGEOUSLY priced sets you've ever seen at RRP?

For me, it has to be the service station coming out. 90 BUCKS?!?!?!?!?!?!?! No way.

I also want to mention that this thread is not meant to intertwine with the "Predictions on Sets and their Secondary Market Value", this is solely for sets with bad pricing at RRP.

    Let it go!

At least the space shuttle set had a lot of big pieces, so it still felt like you were getting a lot.  There's no justification for the new Service Station's price, and I hope it sells absolutely terribly.  It might be some kind of experiment to see how high they can go before people revolt.

Much of what is considered overpriced is subjective, but I think one that is proven to be overpriced is #60097 City Square at 189.99 USD. Especially when Amazon and yoyo have had them both will under 150 USD for the past 5 months. I guess the same can be said for the #60052 Cargo train

#21125 The Jungle Tree House £74.99 in the UK and €89.99 in the EU vs $69.99 in the US. Daylight robbery.

    Great set though...

I only noticed the City Square price the other day and I really don't know how they arrived at that one. One of those sets where I wish I had access to the sales figures...

The entire TRU inventory... especially just before a sale, when they jack up prices to make the sale look better.

While I do agree, this doesn't bother as much as it used to because of their price matching policy. The TRUs in my area have more inventory than most other places, so I shop there frequently. I just get them to price match every time.

Here in Singapore, the UCS MF was sold at RRP S$1000 which is about US$725 at the current exchange rate.

Not that the Death Star is any better as it was sold at the equivalent of US$652 up till last year!
  • ricecakericecake Member Posts: 878
What about all the Dimensions packs? Since they're regularly selling for a good percentage off, to me that says their RRP is too high.

^CMF's as a whole. 50c - $1 per piece. (Obviously not quite as simple as that).

Yep, CMF by far. $3.99 for a single minifigure is autrocios.

yet... I pay it. Over and over again.  I saw where someone came up with a play on the AFOL acronym earlier: AFOOL. That's what I am.

CMFs have an outrageous price per part but every CMF also has multiple exclusive parts. ALL of them have exclusive faces, many have new molds and new colors. For these reasons I think the RRP WAS  acceptable. The price jump for CMFs with IP's also made sense, but carrying that jumped price over to regular CMFs is uncalled for and IMO taking advantage of the situation.

It is interesting most of our entries here are City. On one hand you have the starter sets with 4 minifigures and a small build for $10 which is a good bargain and then you have the $190 City Square or the $90 Service Station which are the complete opposite.

At least with Star Wars it seems like a consistent pricing level from small to large sets. City is just all over the map.

I thought the TRU exclusive #7752 Count Dooku's Solar Sailer was pretty over priced. It was $55 MSRP + the TRU tax for 385 pieces, not a good deal and this can be mathematically proved:

    Bunch of brown parts +
awful Magna Guard head pieces +
angry "Get off my lawn" Count Dooku = still in the box, unassembled 7 years later

belle's enchanted castle could be a serious contender, price is likely to be near 20c per piece and I bet nothing is printed.

I can't take credit for it. It was probably coined by someone at TRU corporate so that they had a more user friendly term for their pricing structure. "Crappy pricing practice" doesn't roll of the tongue the same way. :)

Dooku's Solar Sailer ticked all of the reselling boxes- exclusive figs, exclusive seller...
I didn't realize that the seller was only exclusive because nobody else wanted to sell it...

My first thought. Target had #41068 Arendelle Castle Celebration marked down from $60 to $48 and about $48 is reasonable for that piececount.
Walmart had #60095 Deep Sea Exploration Vessel for $90 instead of $120 and even that seems a bit high.

     Why is 75150 w-702 pieces 4 minifigs  $10 more than 75149 w-740 pieces 4 minifigs
$89.99 seems a bit much/almost as bad as 75096 Sith Infiltrator
  • FauchFauch Member Posts: 2,711
it seems sith infiltrator is 200g bigger than the other 2, so I would suppose it isn't as bad. I looked in LDD and it seems a fair bit bigger than the x wing

#21117 Minecraft Ender Dragon seems rather paltry for $70. Maybe it is bigger in person?

#75096 Sith Infiltrator at £84.99 is the most ridiculously priced set I can think of at the moment. Not only is it terrible value but the set is pretty awful as well.

Fun Fact: WHSmith in Welwyn still has one or two sets from 2012 which haven't been sold due to their horrendous pricing. 2012!

That's the problem with Smiths. The RRP is the same as everywhere else, but they try to sell for more than that. Mine still has Atlantis Treasure (from 2010/11) RRP £19.99, their price £23.99.

The only thing they are good for is the CMF range, with a £5 off £15 voucher. And then they are surprisingly good!

@Fauch - It is the best Sith Infiltrator to date and I think I acknowledged that but objectively the set is relatively poor. The minifigures are dull as well.
  • AllBrickAllBrick Member Posts: 1,497
Just spotted #60134 in TRU old Kent road.............. THIRTY FOUR NINETY NINE!
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,556
Yep, that is the RRP. I guess the value depends on what price you put on minifigures. 14.5 CMF would cost £36, or you could say it is 10p a part so £15 or so for parts, then £20 extra for the minifigures. Either way, it is expensive! Some of the minifigures are rather too generic as well, although some nice torsos.
  • AllBrickAllBrick Member Posts: 1,497
    I think £19.99 tops.

just picked up Lighthouse Point from TRU.  at 59.99 it is a little on the pricey side for a lighthouse but it was a must have day 1 release for me. Aside from the alternate builds , the box showcases 4 lighthouse designs you can build. I'm not sure if they are in the instructions but that increases the value for me.
