What sets might we expect from Rogue One?

Last month Captain Rex asked that very question and today I saw some images of a couple new vehicles from ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY: THE OFFICIAL VISUAL STORY GUIDE that have begun circulating. I would put big money on the Rebel Starfighter and wouldn't be surprised to see the TIE Striker become Lego sets.

Or, more accurate, only one red brick.

Or maybe some slightly saucy singing characters and a story line about coughing (?):

Erm... I have no idea I googled 'moulin rouge star wars' to see what came up.  I'm not into making my own memes ala @Pitfall69
My guess is Leia and Amidala (left and right respectively)
edit: oh and Asaaj Ventress presumably if you were asking about her too.

I wonder how many women will be in it. Episode VII suggested that there were women in the galaxy after all, whereas IV-VI suggests only a handful of women (or females more generally) exist. So will they explain where / why they went into hiding for the OT?

^ Based on the trailers it is exactly the number of women in the original trilogy.  Mon Mothma and Jyn (taking Leia's place).

All of the women were tied up filming the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

(I don't think Gimli was kidding that there are no female dwarves.)

Those ships look fantastic! Although the U-wing reminds me an awful lot of the Thunderfighter from Buck Rogers:

I did notice the nods towards the X-wing as well, of course.

Jeebus ... wouldn't all the ships in this movie be the same as part IV. I don't see alotta time passing between this movie and A New Hope....

I don't exactly go looking spoilers either so maybe this is not the case...
  • MissKittyFantasticoMissKittyFantastico Member Posts: 197
No spoilers (I don't know any to give), but I can imagine reasons why we'd be seeing 'new' stuff. The TIE, for instance, is 'aerial assault', and we never saw the Empire mount an aerial assault in the OT - they couldn't on Hoth due to the shield, and the opportunity didn't really arise elsewhere: Yavin was all space, and Endor had no rebel aircraft and no lines of sight to strafe ground troops through the trees. For the U-wing, who knows - maybe they only had one in fighting condition on Yavin, and the rogue crew wrecked it. Or they had a whole squadron, and wrecked all of them, Jin seems the Demolition Man type a bit.

(Actually I don't know if it's intentional, but grim thought - the U-wing doesn't appear to have an astromech, and as I understand it it's the astromechs that provide the hyperspace coordinates that let X-Wings jump to lightspeed. Perhaps the rebels figured there was a good chance their base was going to be an expanding dust cloud shortly, so they sent their pilots out in ships that could make it to another system if they failed.)

I would expect the A-Wing to come before the U-Wing. Either way, there better be a good explanation for whatever never before seen vehicles are introduced in this movie.  Hopefully the AT-AT's don't have some fantastic new features that get digitally added to the OT for the next home video release.
  • MaffyDMaffyD Member Posts: 3,579
I doubt there'll be any explanation. I'm not sure one is needed really, as I can't be the only person who thinks that in the entire Galaxy, there are only a small number of spacecraft available to either rebels or empire forces. They just haven't been shown on screen before now. In fact, leaving their inclusion unexplained makes the setting more believable, no extended monologued exposition earnestly trying to justify their existence.

^im sure there are many types of spacecraft but I don't see the the corporations mass producing a bunch of different types of ships for each respective faction.

Of course, I can see your point with the Rebels. Naboo, for example, had their yellow fighters which were specific to them. So perhaps if  new planets are introduced as rebel allies, I guess they could bring aircraft specific to their planets into the mix.

Not the Empire though. Looks like they are supplied by one company and most of their ships are just variations of the TIE.

Either way, I'm down to watch this. Looks awesome!

All of the TIE variants and the Lambda Class Shuttle were supposedly manufactured by Sienar Fleet Systems.

^ I'm surprised that one company can handle the orders of an entire empire's fleet of small craft. Saying that though, once you have the Empire contract, I'd imagine you would have zero cash flow problems and an enormous amount of leverage with your suppliers!

Who builds the destroyers? And had anyone actually looked at the economics of the Empire's fleet?

    @MaffyD
Wonderful IDEAS project! I am supporting it now. Thanks for providing the link, without it I would not have known about it.

    -----------

Oooh, and I am looking forward to some sets with lots of proper stormtroopers (not the droopy mustachio printed helmet type 'SW Rebels' stormtrooper minifigs, who are not horrible but definitely not the best either) with gear similar to the sandtroopers from ep.IV along with that landspeeder with all those canons you see in the trailer at 01:04 min. As well as a bunch of those shadowtroopers (or whatever these anthracite coloured stormtroopers are called) in some fun little sets.

    ----------

Does anyone know what those baton like things are, Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) is wearing while dressed up as a Tie-Fighter-Pilot? Those things aren't normally part of a Tie-Fighter-Pilot outfit, are they?

And who is that samurai dude whacking the crap out of that stormtrooper with just a wooden stick!?

    Questions, questions....

Mass production is probably easier with droid/clone laborers. Super cheap. Droids don't sleep.  Materials probably aren't too expensive with all the available planets. Hell ... maybe they drill astroids too for metals. Space!!!!!!!!!

Wondered if that was possible. I wasn't much bothered as I get it all the time in D&D/Pathfinder boards, but I was wondering if someone's OCD would trigger.

Mind you, I bet it helps with searches, so spelling it right has a purpose.

I made some calculations, considering the pieces number of Rogue One sets discovered some time ago and the vehicles that we know will appear in the movie. So, my list is this (I also tried to imagine which minifigures could be included in each set):

75152 (385p) AT-ST (figures: some between Baze, Pao or Bistan)
75152 (449p) Imperial landspeeder (figures: Chirrut)
75154 (543p) TIE Striker (figures: Death Troopers)
    75155 (659p) U-wing (figures: Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, K-250)
75156 (863p) Four-winged dropship (figures: Director Krennic, maybe Darth Vader)

I have some doubt about 75156, since it has 863 pieces and, as seen in the trailer, the four-winged dropship is a colossal starship. But Lego could probably reduce its scale, as it had been already done many times.

    (minor spoilers)
so comparing the sets we got to their importance/screen time in the movie:

AT-ST - appeared for a few moments in one early action scene, not a major role. little to no interaction with named characters
Tank - appeared in the same scene, though was somewhat more central to that scene, with multiple named characters interacting with it
Striker - saw a couple of them flying toward the planet for 2-3 seconds tops. zero interaction with named characters
U-wing - interior/exterior appeared in multiple scenes throughout the movie, hosting the main characters several times. 1st or 2nd most important vehicle in the movie
Krennic's Shuttle - seen 3-4 times throughout the movie, generally in establishing shots or watching Krennic embark/disembark. 3rd most important vehicle int he movie
No Set: Imperial Cargo Shuttle. these is either the 1st or 2nd most central vehicle to the movie, having been used to transport the main characters to the destination of the climatic scenes, and ultimately be used as a "base" of sorts for one of them until the end of the movie.  Will we see this in a future wave?

@dougts - I completely agree regarding the Imperial Cargo Shuttle but would be surprised to see any more Rogue One sets for a while. Episode VIII was originally planned for release in May of 2017 and this was only changed in January so I doubt that LEGO will have had an opportunity to shift their release schedule accordingly. The summer wave seems to be focused on The Force Awakens so I imagine LEGO planned to release some Episode VIII sets in March or April before continuing the episodic theme over the summer and releasing more Episode VIII sets in the winter wave.

It therefore seems unlikely that we will see any more Rogue One sets until summer 2018, although I hope something is released sooner.
