    @Fauch
To be fair, a paddle shift sequential gearbox isn't relevant on  modal car without a working engine either, but technic sets are not about necessary, it's about whether you can engineer a working version using the parts available. Something that I think TLG do very well with the technic line.

according to the review it seemed almost unnecessary as well since you apparently can't see the engine. presumably the effect would be more visible with power functions.

And a non-sequential sequential gearbox is even less relevant!

I don't know about you folks, but shortly after I build mine (waiting to see if they update it at all after the non sequential drama), I am going to rip that gearbox out and pop in some power functions motors. I love Technic cars like crazy, but slightly changing the speed of little yellow pistons has never appealed to me :P

Only read the review on the main site, which also said it was disappointing to hide up the engineering of the build. For a set that is using the gearbox as a selling point and then hide it away does seem strange. Trans clear pieces / body panels to see it in operation would have been nice and possibly some external controls to operate it as the reviewer said that access to the shifter wasn't very easy either which does defeat he object somewhat. Still think it's bloody clever how they made it though and I would love to see a version that utilizes the gearbox with power functions and  RC controls.

@SithLord196 @ColoradoBricks I just checked and mine has not shipped.  Im thinking they were never actually in stock on June 1 as they were supposed to be.  I checked at 3AM EST and they were not available to purchase.  I went to bed and ordered it at 9am EST and it was listed as "will ship in 30 days"

Any word on if the stores have restocked?

I'm considering heading down on Saturday because I still have the April-June extra 100 points with any purchase coupon to use. I figure if they have it in stock I can just cancel my order from the online store (especially since the fountain hasn't shipped yet either) and buy it then.

I don't think you need to remove the gearbox to add motors... just the fake engine. To be honest the gearbox probably has a bit more of a purpose if you add motors since the multiple forward and reverse gears will actually affect the speed of the car rather than just the movement of the hard-to-see pistons.

But only slightly. You really need to be able to change the gears - but that's a bit difficult when the thing is wandering around on it's own out of easy reach.

Cue one RC driver who is able to operate the paddles. In white. With a crash helmet.

The gearbox adds a lot of friction, and it looks to be pretty close ratio. Using multiple power functions motors and battery boxes to move the heavy beast will be enough of a struggle without having to send the power through a zillion little gears.

If you check out videos by builders like Sariel, or Sheepo (such as his Mustang), the gearing doesn't provide much of a benefit beyond a existing as a cool function.

I was able to purchase one from my local Lego Store on Saturday morning.

The one on the shelf was pretty beat up, and when I asked for one in better condition the guy went to the back and got me a sealed shipping carton of one. Sadly the strap let loose in the parking lot, so the box's corners are a little worse for wear, but there was only one other blemish on the box I've seen on one of the sides. The top of the box was in pristine condition thankfully.

I was told that a lot of them that the store have unboxed have been pretty beat up though. Saw it built in store too, it's impressive. Can't wait to build it in a few weeks during my vacation.

@sithlord196 did you cancel your order from S@H?  Mine still has not shipped.  I'm thinking to call S@H to see if they have a projection.  I've been trying to be patient but I just want to see it!  It wont be built for a long while but I just want to check of the OWN box in brickset!
  • JELJ1SJELJ1S Member Posts: 94

Just called S@H and they said the 30 days from the first is still the projected ship date.  Sad time!

  • SithLord196SithLord196 Member Posts: 1,161
I canceled my S@H order when I found out my local Lego Store had plenty in stock.

The one small blemish is kind of aggravating, but I also know that a box this size is more prone to something like that, and it could take multiple returns before I get an absolute perfect one, so I'm just dealing with that small blemish.
  • JELJ1SJELJ1S Member Posts: 94
@sithlord196 I'm hoping when mine ships from Lego it comes in the double cardboard.  Whenever I get stuff form Lego they put in the air filled plastic and by time it gets to Colorado the high altitude causes them to expand, thereby crushing the boxes.

^ 25 minutes long! Well, that's all still probably 5 to 8 times faster than IRL.

If you want to get any kind of actual performance and have fun driving a motorized version of the Porsche, I would recommend removing the gearbox entirely..

I think it'll be pretty hard to get an absolutely perfect box of this set. It's hard to get perfect boxes of smaller sets. As noted, mine has that one small blemish on it but it's on the side of the box and in an area of the background black color so I'm just dealing with it.

Makes the backlog for my vacation in a few weeks huge.

I live between 2 cities that have LEGO stores, but are 3 - 4 hours from there I live.  I contacted one of them to see if they have any 911's in stock and if they did if they would mail me one in the outer carton.  They did have about 15 in stock, but said they were not allowed to ship them.  They could (as per LEGO corporate) only sell to a customer in person.

I contacted LEGO CS over the weekend and got this reply today. I'm hoping to get to one of the stores this weekend to collect one in person.

    Dear Steve,

Thanks for getting in touch with us.

We’re happy to know you’re excited about the LEGO® Technic 42056 Porsche 911 GT3 RS and I'm sorry the status of the order keeps on changing.

Due to the way the box of the set is put together, we’ve found that there’s an increased risk of the box being damaged during shipping. We weren’t aware of this until very recently. Since we always want LEGO fans to have the very best, high-quality experience with any of our products, we’ve made the decision to postpone online sales temporarily.

The delay is solely due to the possible damage the box may receive during shipping and is in no way due to any issues with the model. You can find the LEGO Technic Porsche set at LEGO Stores currently. We’re working really hard on improving the packaging to make it available to buy online again as soon as we can.

We’re very sorry for any inconvenience or disappointment this has caused. You should receive the LEGO® Creator 40221 Fountain with your order.

Steve, please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help!

@speedman29 I just called S@H and got the same answer about the integrity of the box during shipping.  I will be heading to a Lego store nearby next weekend.  If my order hasn't shipped by then I will likely buy it and cancel my online order.  Sad times.  I'm really disappointed in the lack of foresight on Lego's part when trying this new box design.

Interesting a company with this much shipping and packaging experience would not have realized they had issues before it actually became available online!

^ Unfortunately, experience does not necessarily equate to expertise.

Lego has had a dedicated online website for what, 12 years now?  Look how robust that is.

Decided to go and get one from the shop rather than carry on the waiting via S@H. All the boxes on the shelf had some slight damage to them. Mine seemed to be the best of them. The first one I took to the till had a nasty dent on the back so I went to fetch a second one to replace it...poor chap browsing the Technic sets thought I was buying two!

I think their order-by-mail w/o the website was much, much better.

I got a similar email this weekend, but it also stated ...

"We understand how disappointing this may be for you and would like to give you a $25 gift card for the inconvenience. We’ll send the gift card as soon as your LEGO Technic Porsche ships. It will arrive separately and can be used towards a future LEGO purchase."

No offer of compensation to me @cloaked7 I cancelled my order with S@H yesterday though.
  • JELJ1SJELJ1S Member Posts: 94

@speedman29 @cloaked7 I received the same letter saying I would be getting a $25 gift card.  The Porsche still hasn't shipped.  I'm going to the Lego store this weekend.  depending on what I think of the model I may buy it and cancel my order.  Although $25 for patience is a sweet deal too since I wouldn't build it for several more months.

going as it is $25 and not £25, it looks like the USA lego shop@home manager made this gift card call. and the uk shop@home manager did not.
i dear say that it would not be out of the question to e-mail the uk in reply to the e-mail and point out that the usa are getting a gift as a sorry. and that we are not feels wrong.

just visited a store yesterday and was told to call in daily and they would check availability, currently sold out and the Porsche isn't on the normal shipping schedule so they could arrive any day. if they have them they will hold it for me for the day. sucks though the store isn't a short drive for me so it's not like I am free to zip over on lunch or something.

Just like Porsche themselves, TLG are releasing an even more stripped out hardcore track version of the 911 GT3 RS.

It too will have less pieces and cost more, just like the real thing.

I love cars and LEGO, but not the two together for the price they're asking.
I'm off to buy a real car for less, more fun too.

Should we start a competition for 'Best real cars that cost less than 42056' ?

Note - not my actual example but just as tidy. Plus at £300 I'm cheating a bit. Since £300 will be 300 Euros soon enough I figured why not...

My 2 #42056 's arrived today.  Not sure what the special shipping was about.  (maybe they did some studies or testing?) I think they were shipped in a deeper than usual box, but am not sure.  They shipped both in their set specific boxes (awesome!) and those were in outer cardboard boxes with the fountain and paperwork.  Much like any other LEGO set.  Course, the main thing is that both arrived in perfect shape.  The double boxing probably helped.  Although neither box had enough 'bubbles'.
  • JELJ1SJELJ1S Member Posts: 94
Mine ordered on June 1 also shipped July 22.  Scheduled to arrive tomorrow.  It's in Northern Colorado today so its close!

As mentioned above, not enough packing bubbles.  The fountain was pretty badly crushed.  The 911 was not packed any better than any other LEGO set I've got from lego.com.  As mentioned, I think it was a deeper box than most.  And, the 911 was in it's 911 carton, unopened.  Not complaining, but I don't understand how this set was shipped differently other than including the 911 carton.  Don't understand what the delay was about.  Again, not complaining, just don't understand.  Maybe initially they didn't ship inside the 911 carton.  If that was the only change it only takes minutes to change that protocol.

    From LEGO a month ago...
"We try really hard to make sure every LEGO set arrives in perfect condition and we’ve recently discovered that some boxes for the LEGO Technic Porsche are being damaged during shipping. We want to make sure LEGO fans ordering this set have the best experience, so we’ve decided to delay sending the sets until we’ve fixed the problem. Our teams are now working hard to improve the packaging and we plan to start sending out orders again in August. "

Somehow I missed this when it first released as the normal avenues I use to keep abreast of new Lego releases don't deal with Technic which appears to be an almost separate subset of Lego products.  In any case, I had thought that it would release in stores 08/01 but it appears it has already released and been sold out.  So now what?  We just wait on and on for small shipments to be allocated to the stores and hope that it comes up on the online store?  Any expectations that a larger shipment might be sent out to the stores this Monday which was the original in-store release date?  Thanks

On the Canadian store, it had been out of stock from a day after its first release, until just two days ago. Maybe the S@H for USA will have it in stock soon?
