I love big technic sets, as the build is always fun and its always fascinating to me how something you put together in stage 5 links up to parts in stage 36 to make a working model.
I really like this set as it looks like out will be one of those builds that makes you think.
I am surprised that a set of this size  hasn't got a secondary build, although to be fair I am not sure what you could have done with it or that many people who buy this will dismantle it anyway as this is probably as close to what you would call a proper UCS display model in technic.
I do wish they had left it in black though or had some of the chassis parts in orange so that the body looks formed over the chassis instead of it leaving  the visible black gaps but that's just me being picky.

I'm not typically a technic guy, but I do love cars of all shapes and sizes and this is just stunning. Lego Star wars hasn't been what I would have liked lately, so I think I will be making this my big purchase for the year. now where to put it....

It tis a beauty!  I don't know packaging should make a difference but I thought that was cool to see as well in the designer video.

some of those orange parts are new molds ?
The wheel arches and the 3x7x2 panels on the doors are new to this set. Those are the only new beams and body panels I see on the car's exterior, and I'm sure we'll see both of them on other sets in the future.

The designer video shows that there are also new steering and gear shift elements. And the wheels are new. The wheels are the only ones that I imagine will remain exclusive to this set since they're modeled after the wheels of this specific car, so I expect them to be IP-locked.

Incidentally, I wonder if this will be subject to any kind of sales/discounts, since from what I've read it seems like it will be sold at retail rather than as a LEGO exclusive. I don't think I've ever known LEGO sales to expressly exclude Technic the way they often exclude Ninjago, City, and Star Wars. Then again, the stores that carry larger Technic sets in the United States tend to be very limited (usually just TRU if I'm not mistaken).

Yes, sadly the wheels will most likely not be available for purchase from Lego..

When the Unimog first came out(and then the 41999), there were many pieces that Lego denied the purchase of claiming they were licensed parts, which was strange because in the case of the unimog, they were just the regular Lego orange color and not a licensed color from Mercedes..

Is this the start of a new series/brand of Lego Technic Ultimate?  I don't remember that on previous models.

I still think it's a rip off no matter how it gets dressed up.

Honestly what is the point in the fancy box and 6" thick booklet?

    I'm thinking a lot of things. It here's what I'm really really thinking in the end May -Dec 2016 = $160 + 160 + 100+ 350 +300+ 200 + 400 + 350 + Disney Castle + small/unforeseen  extras/minifigs = $2020 + . Approximate roundup keeping it at minimum =$ 2300!!! There lies the problem.

Now for casual sport can anyone fill in the names what those $ numbers I've added ,denote to what set?  . All 2016 sets except for one which is a bit older by comparison .

I'm a little iffy on the use of stickers. I understand the use of them for something like the Kwik-E-Mart and Simpsons House, that have a TON of parts that would need to be printed. I don't see too many parts here that need to printed though.

I'll need to watch the designer video when I get a chance.

Not sure how I'll afford this though. I have a lot of VIP money, so I might just dump into this when it comes out.

I love the box, the book and so on. I think it really adds to the experience. If I'm going to build the model I think it's great to know exactly what I'm building in real life.

I think it's stunning. It beats every other set at that price point for me. Yes it's pricey but it'd way better than Hoth,  GBHQ or the Batcave.

The R&D budget for what? LEGO Technic? Maybe, though it seems like the other Technic products revealed at Toy Fair were well received in their own right. Other than that, designers for other themes wouldn't likely have been involved in this project. So if this is meant to be a jab at non-Technic sets you dislike this year, it misses its mark.

Technic seems to be making out pretty well with the 2nd half of the year models.

    @Aanchir
My apologies that the remark seems to have upset you.

Yes, it was supposed to be a tongue in cheek jab at a particular higher priced set that, whilst a very good collection of smaller sets in one box, is not by any means what it is labelled as or could have been (IMO), and was meant purely as a joke at the expense of this set.

Due to the fact that the set in question has been a big talking point amongst the community I figured most people would get where I was coming from (this also explains why I am not a professional comedian and have to do a regular job for a living).

After seeing the designer video and reading the front page article for #42056 and seeing the effort that has gone into the build and the presentation of this set, I can only wonder and dream what the UCS branded sets would be like with this sort of effort (I mean come on, even the box the Porsche comes in is worthy of display).

I have zero interest in cars at all, they are a means of transportation to me and that is it, but I really want this set as it looks the dogs hangy things.

I never thought that I would ever have to think about making a choice between an expensive Star Wars set and an expensive Technic set, as 95% of the time Star Wars will win, this time, not so much.

One thing is perturbing me, which I hope the Technic-ally minded can help me with.

If this model has gears and reverse, but is driven using 'hand power' what is the use of the gears? Do they change how much the pistons move appropriate to the speed at which the model is pushed? And does reverse invert the direction the pistons move? Or am I overthinking it?

When replying, please keep in mind it took me a while and a bit of searching to work out what 'hand of god' steering meant. I now know that one though!

The gearbox will change the rate at which the engine turns relative to the wheels, and the reverse gear will reverse the direction of rotation in the engine relative to the wheels as well, just as a gearbox in a car does.

The gears are an imitation of the actual gear box. As you may know, engines have a speed range, which, if connected directly to the wheels (with a clutch so that the car can stop) the top speed of the car is limited to the rotation of the wheels; a gear box is there to alter the difference in rotational speed between the engine and the wheels, as well as allowing for the vehicle to reverse.

Therefore, the model will act as the real life counterpart - except the wheels drive the engine, not the other way round.

No that is correct. Ever since #956 the different gear ratios mean that you can see the pistons moving faster or slower depending on what gear you have selected.

Watched the designer video when I got home last night and I'm pretty much sold.

Perfect time to cash in $100 VIP, $100 cash back, and my $30 Lego gift card, making this about $70 out of pocket (well $81.99 due to sales tax).

Thank you for not assuming I knew how a real car's gears worked! It all makes sense now. How does Lego deal with clutches? They can't use friction can they?

Like @bandit778 I have very little interest in cars beyond getting from A to B but this is a mighty handsome set and might actually think about getting one.
  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
As a Porsche owner, this is an absolute must buy for me. It looks gorgeous, the build looks exciting and the final display piece is simply beautiful to stare at.

The price of $300 is a little high, but still in the right neighborhood for what you're getting. It blows away all the other Technic offerings at $200-$300 range. Not to mention how embarrassing the Insult on Hoth or Classic Batcave which is only a few bucks cheaper.

Got called away and posted picture without a (very basic) explanation.
The axle with blue connector goes through the centre hole of the red clutch part, depending in where the clutch sits on the Blue Connector (it clicks on the ridges) it either grips, to give drive to the shaft going through it or free turns without the drive.
I think that clutch parts have progressed since these pictures were taken (The Le Mans 24hr Racer Uses Parts #18948 & #18947) but I think that the way they work is the same in principle.

I think there is a real car that has the engine run backwards for reverse, its very, very rare for a real car to be set up like this though.

@Huw says the scale is 1:8 and the cost is 1:524.  The 1:8 scale makes this 1:512 by volume - so about the same per unit volume as the actual car for anyone that likes weird information like me.
I think i'd have preferred a smaller scale with the same level of finesse on the box and instructions (and a smaller price tag). As it is, I don't think I will break my technic duck on this one.  If it had been matte black I think I would have done.
Maybe, just maybe, we will see a decent discount as it is going to be available from retail. I will have my fingers crossed but won't be holding my breath.

I was not upset, just confused, is all. Any connection that can be drawn between Assault on Hoth and this Porsche is bound to be extremely fuzzy.

If this set sells well enough, maybe we will see LEGO investing in this kind of presentation for other high-dollar sets.

I feel much the same way as you do about this set. I have little to no personal interest in cars (unlike my younger brother, who loves performance cars and actually works as an automotive photographer), but this set really feels like a masterpiece. My family tends to get one or two big Technic sets a year, so maybe this will be the one this year — though at this price, it might be better to wait for a good sale or deal.

That statement was worded slightly odd, but it still holds true that the "relative" direction of rotation is reversed.  I didn't know there was any car that could actually rotate backwards.  Would be interested to see how that is done since you'd have to change the firing order based one which piston is currently in the correct position to turn the crank the opposite direction.
  • FauchFauch Member Posts: 2,710
doesn't sound that exciting to change the way the piston works, I think the tractor has a more interesting feature to change the way the wheels move.

the set doesn't look bad, though I would rather pick a creator car for a third of the price. or the 24h du mans one.

This is one of those rare sets that I would love to build, but have no interest in owning. I personally don't see a lot of display value in Technic sets, even this one. Looks it would be really cool to build though so I'm happy for those of you who do end up with it.
  • mpfirnhabermpfirnhaber Member Posts: 65
I haven't bought Technic since the early 90s, and I rarely buy high dollar sets, but I'm probably going to pick this up. It's like nothing I've ever seen Lego produce. That's where the $300 price tag comes in - it's an exclusive, serialized item that is drawing in non-Technic folks with its wow factor.

Just noticed that Top Gear has a picture of the Porsche and it looks like someone edited the color to match the Lava Orange of the real car..  A bit misleading..

I like the set, but I definitely prefer the "color corrected" Lava Orange way better. Not a deal breaker, but missed opportunity for LEGO I think. The set is still IMO the only worthy successor to the 8880 Super Car.

It does look good in "lava orange" but the black and white patterns really hide some of the underneath elements giving the illusion of no gaps.
  • pharmjodpharmjod Member Posts: 2,916
I liked the black and white one too. I'm just thinking if you're gonna do a set like this, why not go all the way and make the color accurate too. Maybe that's a difficult color to reproduce in the LEGO plastic though. I have no idea.
  • chuckpchuckp Member Posts: 684
Lava Orange parts would have been a nice touch, but just imagine the cost of the set with a brand new color. Yikes. Personally, I like the Bright Orange, it reminds me of Signal Orange that Porsche used in the 70's on the 914 and 911. Regardless, this is a Day 1 purchase for me.
