Atleast the apostrophes are in the right spots.  That's about all I find redeeming from that list.

isn't about anyone able to modify a wiki? that would make this just the opinion of the last person who edited.
  • TigerMothTigerMoth Member Posts: 2,343

No silly personal opinions like having to include plaques or disregarding the box.
What is that if it's not a personal opinion?

As there is no official list, any list is just an opinion. And if there was such a list people would have different opinions about whether it was a complete and accurate list!

If in doubt it's on that list right?

Is there anything any of you can think of that might be considered a UCS set that isn't?

I don't need to think of anything (nor do I want to because that is guaranteed to cause arguments). That page lists UCS as a subtheme of Creator, Ninjago and Ghostbusters, and yet none of those sets are listed. Is it or isn't it? It's not even consistent.

It's also not consistent when listing the characteristics for such a set - for everything it lists it says there are exceptions. So it hasn't even defined a set of rules for what the author considers to be a UCS set.

We are talking about the list of sets right?

Not looking for errors on the wiki...pfft

What counts as being UCS has been discussed ad nauseam.  I'm sure we all understand that there is opinion involved.  The list that lists all of the possible options seems like the best representation no matter what your personal opinion. (I have never included 10188 as a UCS for example)

Maybe someone can point out a list that lists other sets someone might consider UCS that aren't included in that one?  I can't think of any off the top of my head.

You really don't get it, do you? There is no list, and that means anybody can create one that contains virtually anything. And there are certainly sets that, to some people, merit the title more than some that are on your list. Anything big or rare or including rare parts might qualify in somebody's mind, simply because there are other sets that fulfil the same conditions and that are definitely UCS.

The point there is that one or more of the authors included other themes in a list that have UCS sets. Those authors themselves considered other unnamed sets as being UCS, at least for a while. Those other sets are obviously not on the list, so it isn't a complete list of what might be considered UCS.

If we are making a new list, then Space Skulls better damn well be on it.

There you are - instant proof that the list is incomplete.

By the way - is that with or without sausages?

Of course, the biggest mystery here is why TLG would have conceived an 'Ultimate Collectors Series' and then made it almost impossible for collectors to work out what was in the series in order to collect it!

Perhaps only ultimate collectors are ultimate enough to work it out. And I guess if we all have our own rules, that makes all of us ultimate collectors :)

Thanks for the replies, didn't realize it was such a big issue. As someone with "new eyes" so to speak it is definitely confusing as hell. That said I think I'll stick to things that say 'ultimate' in the name just to be safe. Doesn't seem like there's much debate about those sets (labeled on the box I mean).
  • BumblepantsBumblepants Member Posts: 7,624
One aspect of the whole UCS or not debate is the box art itself. I really appreciate the efforts they have put into graphic design for the newer ones. The #10240 X-Wing packed in the plain Yoda themed motif found in every Star Wars product Lego or otherwise that year just lacked 'special'. I almost didn't get one because of it. When they rolled out the Sandcrawler and Slave 1 boxes though, those scream 'I am bigger and better than regular sets'. Even the original UCS X-Wing had really cool box design that set them apart.

Because it's not, or it wasn't, a series. It's simply a label that has been applied to a number of sets in an attempt to make each of them more desirable. It's not even always the same label. They also slap "special edition" labels on some sets, when there's no "normal edition", for much the same reason.

Collectors feel a need to establish what's in a series; TLG don't.

Ultimate Spider-Man? Nexo Knights? There have been Ultimate Mindstorms, Hero Factory, Bionicle, and Chima sets, even Cars, to name but a few, and just tubs of basic bricks.

    @Jayoheazy
To be honest with you the best way to define the 'Ultimate' sets are what you, in your opinion, are the ones that you think are worth adding to your collection and are worth the added expenditure that these sets can go for, especially if your planning on getting some of the earlier sets.
Some of the sets are less than impressive but have the 'UCS' labelling (#75098 - Laugh a minute on Hoth is one such set), other sets make really good display pieces but do not get the 'Ultimate' tagging so it really does come down to you as a collector.

"Ultimate" collectors buy everything, so by default they have the whole series whether they know what the series consists of or not. =)

    A Simple Definition of UCS:
the set you smuggle into the house without your wife knowing, hiding your credit card statement and hoping to God she never sees how much it cost.
By that definition, every set is a UCS set...

Ah, so I have the very coveted UCS Cafe Corner...sort of, since the only one I could afford was slightly incomplete. And used. But still definitely met the Simple Definition!

I'm going to nominate #7965 as a UCS set. I found one about 95% complete, less the minifigs, this weekend, brought it right in through the front door. It is the first set that has prompted my wife (not yet an AFOL) to say we need a better way to display some of these sets.

^#7965 isn't UCS. It isn't even in contention to be honest. Not to mention it would mean the two other iterations would then get in too.
If you want to really impress the Mrs, try #10179 - size really does matter ;)

Or, in units we all understand, 1kg = 431 LEGO bricks (of the classic 2x4 variety) :-)
  • FauchFauch Member Posts: 2,679
you don't know what's a liter of water?

^Just slightly more than a litre of pepsi, the dissolved gas make it lighter.

But the sugar makes it heavier.

Diet Pepsi is lighter than water and can be made to float on it; Pepsi is heavier and will sink.

I'm full of hot air, sugar and water!
