ok the main point of this post is to ask what the brickset members think it the best color/finish to get when buying new cheep bookcases. for displaying Lego on.

this is the cheapest one i found.
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/30263844/#/30263844
but shipping is £7.50 so it not as cheep as it looks.

any and all advise is welcome.

One important aspect to consider is the depth of the shelves when displaying large sets. I'm using a (now discontinued) tall, deep IKEA bookcase:

Also, if you don't have one already, it's worth getting an IKEA Family card - we get a little bit of discount that way. I feel like the colour/finish depends more on the room you're going to put it in, but I guess there could be an issue if you want to photograph your displays a lot - the question might be whether it's easier, with your available equipment, to photograph Lego against black, white, oak or birch.

I like white finish for LEGO display shelves. It shows off the sets the best, without disrupting the look. If your focus is mainly on spaceships, black can look good too. But you can't go wrong with white.

Also it is a good idea to get at least IKEA quality bookshelves. There are cheaper options, but they start drooping in the middle after just a little while. So it is a good idea to invest a bit more for shelves that will actually last and looks good.

I switched over from bookshelves to a storage cube system. I can display the larger sets at the top, and smaller ones in the cubes. I really like it.

I do however also have some open hanging shelves for larger displays. The reason I like those is because it is easy to reconfigure them and extra shelves are cheap.

If you find a nice cheep bookcase, the first thing you should do is tweet about it.

I tend to find cheep bookcases that you can tweet about in Millets

I would tweet about cheep bookshelves while watching Veep in my Jeep that I keep on steep street near my local creep barkeep or in my dreams after counting sheep puts me in a deep sleep.

I'm using IKEA STUVA cabinets for storage, one of these
    http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S49886121/ and one of these
    http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S49875962/

They are quite sturdy, lots of room, and I found them at the thrift store locally for $3.99US each. There is a brick and mortar IKEA store locally and several colleges, so there tends to be a lot of used IKEA furniture available locally.

I use birch IKEA Billys, 39cm deep, but as noted above they've been discontinued and the shallower units are not much use for anything other than books ;)

them deep shelving look good, but if they are discontinued then it's not a lot of help.

For a reference, these are the 'normal' Ikea Billy bookcases.  Not very deep - will not fit a modular.

And don't mind the Anger.  He's a big Ghostbusters fan.

Huh? I just bought some Billy bookcases (http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/00263850/) which are most certainly deep enough to fit a modular. Though annoyingly, one stud too small to fit three next to each other.

I've got a local thrift store that usually has stuff at a good price. I might grab a deep bookshelf with some wear, sand it, repaint it, and attach it to my Lego platform.

I've installed IKEA Ivar shelving in the Lego room. You'll get 3 modulars next to each other and they're just about 2 modulars deep.
