New forum features

The forum software has been upgraded and there are some cool new features:

- When adding a comment a row of buttons is shown above the text input box which simplify adding basic HTML tags for bold, italic, URLs, images etc.

- See who's online at the bottom of the menu bar on the right

- Q&A: "Allows users to designate a discussion as a question and then accept one or more of the comments as an answer." When you start a discussion you'll see two tabs ' Ask a Question/Start a New Discussion'. Not sure how this will work in practice but let's try it...

- Moderators can now split and merge discussions

I've also disabled tagging, as I felt it wasn't providing much value.

That 'see you online' is a scary feature. I can clearly see Geoff and Ian not doing their work in the office! Like it though!! :o)

Nice! Those are some sweet features, very welcome.
Minor thing, the 'posted' background is a bit dark, but overall v nice
  • MinifigsMeMinifigsMe Member Posts: 2,844
Nice. Though I found tagging (I presume you mean people) quite handy for getting someone's attention if they don't read every thread, especially those that go off topic
  • atkinsaratkinsar Member Posts: 4,272
^ no, that's still in and is very useful, tagging is adding tags to posts, like 'Star_Wars', or 'MOC', so you you could then search for discussions by tag. Not sure many people noticed it, let alone used it.
  • MinifigsMeMinifigsMe Member Posts: 2,844
    ^ah yes, agreed!

'Mark all viewed' doesn't seem to work any more.

Also the 'new' tags seem to be all over the place but maybe that's just me. Hard to know since I can't 'reset' them.

    ^^ Never used/ noticed tagging.

    Bold or Not Bold

Cool new features. I noticed the colors changed a little bit, too. Keep up the great work.

Comic sans! It works if you don't type it in as code, just in the normal text box.
  • Si_UKNZSi_UKNZ NZMember Posts: 4,179

Brilliant, it's just like one of those tacky ads on eBay! Now how do I make it flashing?

  • georgebjonesgeorgebjones Member Posts: 224
In light of the most recent posts, may I rescind my earlier comment? ;-)
  • LegogeekLegogeek Orange County, CaliforniaMember Posts: 711
@Matthew - well then either I'm doing something completely wrong or it's my computer. I've been typing it in the normal text box. I assumed I should then highlight the text I want to enhance and then click one of the tabs.... usually how it works everywhere else, but not seeming to function for me.
Of course I'm not the brightest bulb in the box.
  • MatthewMatthew Cheshire, UKAdministrator Posts: 3,734
^ What you have to so is click one of the tabs, then type the text you want enhanced between the two code tags, like on the BrickLink forum, if you've ever used that?
  • LegogeekLegogeek Orange County, CaliforniaMember Posts: 711
^ Basically that's what I've been trying in various forms, but when I click a tab - nothing, nada, nichts... no code tags ... no effect what-so-ever. :o(

Maybe it'll work on my home computer... right now I'm at work with Windows XP Pro, IE 8
  • HuwHuw Brickset Towers, Hampshire, UKAdministrator Posts: 6,439
You might have trouble in IE8, it didn't work properly for me at work earlier.
  • LegogeekLegogeek Orange County, CaliforniaMember Posts: 711
^ Thanks Huw. I'll let you know what happens at home (IE9). We have to stick with IE8 at work because of certain other applications.
  • LegogeekLegogeek Orange County, CaliforniaMember Posts: 711
Nope, still can't get the tabs to work... now at home - Windows 7 Ultimate & IE9

@dougts, I'm not keen either but at least people have the option of viewing the old or new layout, so hopefully everyone's preference can be accommodated.
  • dougtsdougts Oregon, USAMember Posts: 4,128
oh? didn't realize I can switch to old. will look for that now
  • dremel99dremel99 Member Posts: 123
So how do I see it with the old layout, cause I have a hard time with this new one. Thanks
  • dougtsdougts Oregon, USAMember Posts: 4,128
yeah, I'm not finding an option for the old format. where is it?
  • kylejohnson11kylejohnson11 Member Posts: 508
Just click on view all discussions
  • MatthewMatthew Cheshire, UKAdministrator Posts: 3,734
If you really don't like it, (like me), you can click on the 'Discussions' button to get the old view.
  • dremel99dremel99 Member Posts: 123
I really don't like it, it was great before.

would be better if you could switch between the new and old views on the dark blue bar

personally i think the new view is useful but as a secondary view rather than primary
wouldnt be surprised if we get few replies here as its hard to find!

Does the forum have a thread where we can post all kind of LEGO oriented news we stumble upon? Somethings are not really set oriented, but are nice to know for the AFOL's. A catagory for that would be great!
  • LostInTranslationLostInTranslation UKMember Posts: 5,520
@icey117 - Just post a discussion under the "Everything Else Lego" category.

are the "views" for each topic, the same for everyone?
    because mine read:

    15.2M views
Predictions on Discontinuing Sets and their Secondary Market Value

Abbreviation & Acronym list - Builders edition

Seriously? There are significantly more speculators here than hobbyists!
  • JosephJoseph Member Posts: 651
^ At least in my experience, the "views"number, like "visits" isn't very accurate; especially with older threads.
  • LegoboyLegoboy 100km furtherMember Posts: 8,702
^ Couldn't agree more. No idea who'd be reading such tosh!? Can't be right. :-P
  • atkinsaratkinsar Member Posts: 4,272
A significant number of 'guests' would be reading that thread I'd imagine, so I can believe it's accurate enough.

^ at 15.2M your not kidding!

The number is quite incredible, isn't it...

Brickset is wise to have threads for speculators/resellers. If they didn't, those 15.2M views would be looking elsewhere. I find most of the conversations very interesting and do like to know others' thoughts on specific sets. It also gives me a heads-up on what may be going soon so I can grab a particular set for much less than I would have to pay down the road. Furthermore, those that post on the "Predictions" thread also provide good points-of-view (for the most part) on other threads as well.

To qualify my comments, I have never resold a lego set to date (too much hassle in an otherwise busy life). That may change, but for now life interferes...
