CMF 15 at Target - 3.99

As reported by the Brick Fan earlier this week, I picked up some CMF 15's at Target today. My store still has a boatload of series 14 monsters, but it seemed picked over already (no queens or jewel thieves, but I did get the shark guy).

    Can you post the dpci?

It should be the same as always...

    Nothing in our area yet

The Target I usually go to had an end cap full of them S14 figs. I hate how they have the same dpci.
  • Sethro3Sethro3 Member Posts: 996
Ours is swimming in Monster figures still. They did have series 15 for a brief window, but none since.

And it does suck about the same dpci considering you never know if you'll find the newest series or the old. No hope.

My target shows over 400 in stock, but I'm not sure if they are series 15 or not.

Wow 494 in stock for me, is the street date(available to sell) supposed to be February 1st?

Are the really CMF 15, or are they CMF 14 or Simpsons series 2 (or even series 13)?
  • legogregorslegogregors Member Posts: 402
I am in the same boat as Bricklover18.  I don't know but my store observes the street date which I thought was 2/1/16.  Is this correct?

I guess 1 local target has them.  Headed there now

Were they out on the floor already, or did they have to pull them from the back?
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,788
Flipping freezing outside where I live, but tempted to go out and try to get some figures anyway.

If you are unsure if your Target has series 15 the best solution would be to ask them.

    NO, That's too easy.. :-p

Seriously though, the issue with that is if the Customer service, or floor employees,  even care about your question and they do not just say 'oh we have them' and you get there and they do not, or it is another series, or someone buys them all before getting there anyway.. etc etc.

I was at the store.  Back to  series 13,  I asked the guy,  he just brought out a few bags from the Stock Room
  • KralaskanKralaskan Member Posts: 208
They got them but are slow bringing them out.   I don't get it.   I asked and they went to back and brought me 20 packs.   Today a half box was on shelf
  • scotty12scotty12 Member Posts: 835
Do we all live in the same place? (only kidding). The same happened to me tonight. I had to ask...they found a sealed box/case in the back...brought it out and asked how many I wanted and then turn around and put it back in the store room.  And all this was after 10 minutes of trying to locate it on his PDA and complaining why they aren't out on the floor when they got them the 13th.
  • KralaskanKralaskan Member Posts: 208
Ya I don't get it.  3 stores in our area all had them in back.  Nothing on shelf not even 14s.  They said they had 14s in the back too.   Fail

Most will post the box at the electronics counter if there isn't a end so retail drop box
  • Sethro3Sethro3 Member Posts: 996
I think YMMV incredibly. I called once and they said they had some. I drove to the store (out of the way mind you) and asked someone because I couldn't find any out. That person said they had some earlier but they were all sold out. Me being upset was about to just leave, but then I used my words and said I just called and they said there were some available. Naturally the person I asked at the store was not the same person as I talked with on the phone. They ended up having them at the electronics counter like the above person mentioned. But I didn't know what since the person on the phone didn't tell me he grabbed them from the back room and put them there for me when I got to the store...communication people!

Needless to say, brand new box, got my whole line-up. This was for the Monsters when they were first being put out. If I had known they would be this plentiful I wouldn't have worried so much originally.

Guys, I have to confess, I have gone probably every day this week to Target to check if they've been put out, I'm starting to think I'm obsessed.....I'm kidding, I already know I'm obsessed.

It's been real helpful for my wife though, any errand that will take me remotely close to the Target, I am immediately willing to go do.

Going to have to ask someone if they can go in the back and snag them for me, hadn't thought of that before, so thanks @Sethro3!!

This is how I know LEGO has nailed this cmf obsession on the head. People can just order complete sets or full cases from @MinifiguresPlus for way cheaper and with a ton less stress. I used to Chase Targets looking for these . Once I started buying by the case and full set it took the pressure off.

^Yup, this is my first go around with MinifiguresPlus. Went with a full set to cover the series, then will go back to feel for only the duplicates I need. Will save a ton of time and effort, while simultaneously saving a few bucks on tax since it was $63 total cost shipped (RRP is $63.84 + tax).

^^ Agreed, I think @MinifiguresPlus has 1/2 my purchase history on eBay as of late anyway.  This and series 14 just made it that much easier to get the full set.

^ I am doing the same just hitting Target and Walgreens to gather up any duplicates I want.

I have gotten boxes from them in the past without issue. But the set method is my plan as well. A set at about RRP per pack (what I would have to pay anyway from a store) for me is much less stress now knowing that my GF and I each have a set (and do not have to stand in a store for 20 minutes getting two of each and wiping out a stores potential first batch), and did so without getting a whole box, as most of the duplicates I want are rares anyway (unfortunately).
  • KralaskanKralaskan Member Posts: 208
Our targets only got like 1 box each.  Wiped out fast.  They said another box should be coming in Friday.  Have not seen any at Walgreens yet.  They had the first 14s in our area last fall.
I asked if there was any in back (target) they said yes and brought out a handful of 14s and Simpsons 2. Ha ha
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,788
Yeah, a bit interesting that it seems that those who are pre-ordering are getting the the same time they start appearing in stores (usually stores get their first batch 30 days before those who pre-order get theirs). So I would if stores are curtailing their orders, or if LEGO is just changing their distribution methods around.

Exactly. I bought two complete sets of S14 from MinifiguresPlus and have S15 preordered as well. This is the only way I will buy them from now on (assuming the excellent pricing stays intact). I'm done hunting these things down in stores though. The hunt was fun for awhile, but now it's all raided displays and heavy felt packs. My plan is to make S15 the last series I buy extras for as well. The only exceptions to that will be classic monsters, mythology inspired, and costumed figs.  We'll see how that last part goes...

As I was picking up multiple Cyberman Fun Packs today at $7.50 purely for the characters (and not the game), I realized that I was getting my two figures cheaper than the retail price of two CMF.  That realization elicited some mixed emotions.

Yeah... I love CMF. It's probably my favorite theme, but they are a horrible value and I don't even try to kid myself into believing otherwise. It bothers me every single time I buy them. I've considered selling off some of the earlier themes just so the collection would be incomplete. I would probably be more apt to give them up then.

Right now might be a great time to sell a complete Series 1...or even an incomplete Series 1, judging by some of the prices I've seen on BrickLink lately.

My problem is that, up until Series 13, I never wanted a complete series, so I waited until prices had stabilized and bought the ones I wanted on BrickLink. For Series 13, I was lucky enough to stumble across two just-opened boxes, and got all the ones I wanted that way, which was fun, but not something that's likely to happen to me again. Then, for 14 and 15, TLG put together two groups of figures where there wasn't even one that didn't appeal to me, so buying a complete set became the logical way to go. I wonder how long before I am able to decide that I really only want two or three out of a series again!

  • mathewmathew Member Posts: 2,099
I never collect a whole set of CMF.  $4 is a lot for 3.5 grams of plastic.  But you have to consider that almost all of them utilize unique parts.  I tend to single out 3 or 4 from a set that really interest me.  Usually that's a space guy or alien and castle figs.  I'm not interested in the average city dwellers and the costume characters.  My boys occasionally want one so I'll feel out the one they are looking for.

    ^exactly.
  • Sethro3Sethro3 Member Posts: 996
That's usually the problem. There are a few I want, and a few my daughter wants and then we end up wanting the whole series between us or we end up wanting the same figures.

My problem is the unique parts. Sometimes I need one and it is cheaper to get the figure now than the accessory later comparatively. It seems odd. So I just buy the whole figure now, not so much for a complete set since most are only really valuable from the earlier less accessible series, but more so to have access to certain heads/prints/accessories that I may need for a MOC/scene.

I agree on the expense though. I hate how much they cost and that eats up a lot of my LEGO budget just for these few figures.

But I agree, I have no desire to get a complete series 1-x, so I don't know why I bother. I don't have 1-4 as complete. In fact,  I hardly have any out of those series.

I'm also confused by their popularity. I'm used to minifigures being a buck or two worth of a set's cost. So when CMF came out, I brushed it off. I'm also reminded of the annoyances of Magic the Gathering booster packs.
  • LegoTTLegoTT Member Posts: 487
I think their popularity is partially driven by the excitement of opening an unknown figure. Lots of toy manufacturers seem to be offering the same type of 'thrill' for consumers. Albeit, other options don't cost as much.

If if they were in clear blister packs, I think we'd see tons of old unwanted figs on the shelves. Probably wouldn't even have 16 in a series, if they had the series model at all.

From a business standpoint, they're printing money. My capitalist side applauds their genius. My collector side despises their understanding of economics and human psychology.

ya know, if a minor buys them in the US, they can open them and return to the store opened for money back if they don't like what they get.  The store can not sell to the minor in the future if they elect to, but the kid do  have an out.  The only part I'm not sure of is if an adult has to go with them to ask for the money back.

IMO if these all had the same 'rarity' I'm not so sure they would be as popular as they are now. I mean how much of these sales are driven by cherry pickers who buy a box, or an aisle display, pick out the rares -or a set or two- and then return the box when they are done? Are those numbers taken into account? Same with those who are wholesalers buying tons of boxes to flip to consumers because there is money to be made by undercutting LEGO's inflated RRP for these? I have seen retail stores that incorrectly assumed demand to only have boxes and boxes of CMFs sitting on the shelf (like series 13 at a Target near me). So are they popular? Absolutely, they are neat figures, but are they as popular as the financial make them out to be? Would they be as popular if the rarity was the same in a box? Not sure.

Location matters a lot, I think.  I live in the St. Louis area and frequent a number of Target stores.  Many sold out of S14 CMFs in a matter of one or two weeks.  Another (a bit out of the way) still has a box of S13 on the shelf.  Have yet to see S15 anywhere (granted, I haven't checked since last Saturday).

When you think about it, if there are just 10 AFOLs that frequent one specific Target, they could account for a majority of the percentage of CMF sales.  Especially if each got a complete set + a few extras.

The Target at Town & Country (in Chesterfield) had a rack full of S15 on Friday if you're looking.  I picked out the couple I wanted fairly easily.
  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,342
The Target near me doesn't have any on the floor, but the inventory checker says they have about 120 in the back.
I'm guessing I ask for them at the service desk, but what do I ask for?
Should I get only S15 or are other series worthwhile?
Is it okay to buy from an opened case, or only from a sealed case?
    How many should I get?
Will I able to be check packages? How is that done? Alternately, what's the best way to open the bags without harming value?
