Do you think Lego will bring back the Pirates of the Caribbean theme for the upcoming film?

I think they will. At least they'd be smart to. Pirates of the Caribbean was one of my favorite themes :) if they do it will make me super happy!

I don't know if they will. The film, if following the other films trend, will be the worst film of 2016. And I don't think the previous sets sold that well. So I would be surprised if they did do them.

PoTC is Disney. I would be surprised if they did not make some line of the sets, otherwise someone else will want to.

I wouldn't be surprised if the lego-disney agreement gives Disney a certain level of 'control' over which releases Lego is to support - so a poor showing from the last batch of sets may not be enough for Lego to get out of doing another run. In fact, the opposite may be true; if the last film wasn't a huge success, yet Disney are pushing ahead with a new one, then they're likely to want it well backed with merchandise.

That being said, there are other major releases in 2017 which may take priority (cars 3, a new major 'princess' feature, guardians of the galaxy)

Other major releases would probably not stop Disney from merchandising the hell out of everything.

Lego will be told to make it!

Nobody 'tells' anyone to do anything.

Mutual market research and whatever formula/algorithm Lego and Disney use to maximize their relationship will determine what is produced.

But I don't think Lego retired the Pirates theme if there wasn't going to be new PotC sets.

BTW, the last Pirates movie made a billion dollars.  There'll be plenty of support for the merchandise.

The quality of the film has little to do with its commercial success.

    ...cough cough... Transformers... cough... cough...

I doubt Lego would have retired a line as successful as Pirates so quickly unless there was something new coming up soon. However, I can't help but think that they would've done better if, instead of retiring the line 1.5 years early, they could've released a second, better wave to make up for the slightly below average first one.

@TheUltimateTFOL: I agree. They should've released a second wave! But did we know in 2011 that a new PoTC film was coming out? Nope. I don't know if they'll bring it back :( :( :(

that sounds exciting, but now I'm wondering if I should get the brick bounty or if some more epic ship is coming.

The funny thing is...as average as the line is a whole...the secondary market prices for some of them, Black Pearl specifically, are crazy. If LEGO does lines like The Lone Ranger, they will probably take a shot at a second PotC wave when the new movie arrives.

I don't see why they wouldn't.  Honestly I don't see why they would retire the classic pirate line so quickly this year if something else wasn't already in line.  They are typically working 2-3 years down the line so whatever is happening is already in motion.
  • FauchFauch Member Posts: 2,662
they don't look average to me, figs are good and sets look more realistic than classic pirates. also I like that there are more buildings and land based locations.

yeah, prices for the black pearl are crazy. it really doesn't look notably different from brickbeard and brick bounty, except it is black.

^  I envision a board room with Disney Execs daring Lego Execs to make a Palace Pets Lego.

(And laughing hysterically on the car ride home.)

I can't believe they agreed to make THAT!

I bet they will make some sets. Hopefully, at least, I want some more unique ships!

I would love another brick built ship to go with the Sea Cow.

Lego actually has a Disney license to Princess and Star Wars. I optimistically think that they'll make sets for the upcoming PotC film at the beginning of next year (2017).

I hope they make new PotC sets! I was still sort of in my dark ages when the original sets were released, so I missed a lot of good stuff. I hope they make a new Black Pearl. Also, it would be great if the Flying Dutchman returns for this film, as that would make a great set.

The Dutchman was confirmed as an upcoming set some time ago ;)

Really? That would be good news, but what's the source of that information?

I heard that they had a final design for a D2C 'Flying Dutchman' however the sales were lacking for the last wave of sets therefore they didn't release it :/

There was an infamous prototype that was 'confirmed' here and maybe elsewhere when the origional PotC line came out. Got scrapped last minute by Lego. Anyway, we still have #3817
