Moving a Lego collection abroad

Hi all,

I'm moving to Switzerland in January and I was wondering what experience other people have had moving their (large) Lego collection abroad. I'm worried that I've got almost 15 x 64 Litre boxes (the Really useful boxes) full of Lego. Are the customs people going to believe that this is all for personal use or will I likely encounter some problems bringing this into Switzerland? Will I have to pay tax on this collection?

I will probably take some sets with me each time I come back to the UK (my wife and son will be in the UK for the first 3 months), but this will just likely scratch the surface of the collection.

Packing all the Lego has made me realise that I have a serious problem - how did I manage to accumulate all this Lego.....?!

Sell it off cheap to brickset members!

I guess the important point is it opened or sealed boxes, and are there multiples. If opened, I doubt they will care. I've shipped collections (Lego and other stuff) with no problem in the past. Both in EU and from outside.

Lol. Yep, trying to sell a few things but can't seem to part with most of it! All of the sets are opened but I've got some sealed Lego games.

Transfer of domicile to Switzerland is the most important requirement in order to have your household goods and any collections, animals or your car imported into Switzerland duty-free. Further the imported articles must have been used by you personally for at least 6 months and they have to be continued to be used by you after importation.

I moved 30kg's worth of Lego from NZ to Malaysia earlier this year. All taken apart and placed into ziplock bags, according to the sets/instruction manuals. Everything fitted into one large luggage bag. Walked straight through at Customs; they didn't even bother scanning my bags.

But I'm guessing you have way more.
