New to building and the forum

hi everyone, now a small introduction, I played Lego as a kid but never anything too serious. Make it up as I go along sort of thing.
ive been dying to get back into it for a while now. At 25, I want to start again on the Lego front.
So basically I'm looking at city I think. Some of that stuff looks awesome. 
Does anybody have any advice on where to start? Also I'm not looking to go out and spend hundreds and hundreds at first, just a couple of budget builds .

I would suggest looking at the Creator 3-n-1 Toy and Grocery Shop #31036 or its big brother the #31026 Bike Shop and Cafe. Both offer a good mix of parts, builds, and building techniques that are enjoyable. This is also a good way to get your feet wet on the idea of modular buildings without dropping all that money on one right away.

Also, get the ones you looked at that made you say 'awesome!' That is the best way to pick out Lego.

Thanks, the awesome ones were in a long time friends house, he has a room dedicated just to Lego sets. Has a city built together on tables. Some parts of that look fantastic and even the rest of it looks really good . Haha

I will also say buy most stuff only when it is on sale as many sets seem to be overpriced now. Watch sites like Amazon (Amazon itself selling, do not buy new sets from 3rd party dealers on Amazon-the listing will say 'sold by Amazon'), as many city and creator sets go on sale. Also be wary of those selling currently produced sets on eBay for dirt cheap as that may be signs of drop shipping with stolen credit card info.

The other thing I will add is to get a LEGO VIP account at shop.lego.com. This entitles you to points back and also when they have double points giveaways.

Thanks guys, I managed to bag a couple of bargains this weekend. 3 for 2 on all Lego in a local store. I bought the Ferrari speed champions set(75913), city fire station(60004), the city square(60097). Also 3 cheaper smaller sets city construction van(60073), tow truck(60081) and bike transporter(60084).
i got all 6 sets for less than £200 so I'm really happy with that and should keep me going for a while :)
also, managed to get 3 new duplo sets for my son

For some ideas on advanced building techniques, it's worth checking out Didier Enjary's "The Unofficial LEGO Advanced Building Techniques Guide". It's a free PDF download, originally written back in 2007, but it's still a really good starting point for opening up the world Lego geometry and SNOT building.
