Lego Duplo block thickness

as I was sorting Duplo blocks, I noticed a thickness variance.

is this common?
what causes this?
FYI: one block is stamped Lego, the other Duplo

As per system bricks, the Duplo mould has evolved over the years. The name on the studs is one difference, but mostly it's the underside which changes, usually quite visibly. I wonder if the thickness issue is dependent on mould type? Can you tell?

Are you sure it's a difference in thickness? Or could it be a difference in translucency?

I know with the Chinese-sourced plastic in the Collectible Minifigures (for instance), the ABS plastic is translucent:

As for the name on the studs, I'm not sure about when that happened, or if it's happened multiple times.  We've seen examples of both in our own collection, although I've never checked the translucency or wall thickness in DUPLO.

You may be right regarding the source of the plastic and/or manufacturing of the pieces, @davee123.

@richselby, I'll see if I can get a good snapshot of the underside if appears to make a difference.
