Star Wars: The Force Awakens - New Trailer & Lego set details - General discussion & stuff...

I cannot wait to go see the new SW movie. A new trailer has been released today:
http://www.starwars.com/video/star-wars-the-force-awakens-trailer-official
or (from Youtube)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGbxmsDFVnE

If I am not mistaken this is the third trailer?!

I also noticed that my Lego First Order Special Forces Tie-Fighter #75101 , which I just build, is supposed to be outfitted with a turret gun at the underside of the main fuselage. The big gun on top probably also needs to be able to swivel around?! Apparently there are two Tie-fighter versions; this enhanced two seater with more weapons, and the 'old' OT version with some updates (the colour scheme is all I can tell), apart from being updated the to modern combat standards, according to the SW database, what ever that may mean? So it would not surprise me if another one seater Tie-Fighter without red details will be released in the near future.

I also saw that my Kylo Ren Command Shuttle #75104  is ever more movie inaccurate. Which makes me curious how long it will take for TLG to redesign it, and in the future release a new version of it? The cockpit view-screen appears red in the new trailer. I will just take my set and MOC/MOD it, even if that means it does not resemble the ship from the film any longer at all.

It is kind of a shame that TLG has not been given more accurate info on the actual designs of the vehicles, so they could have aproximated the models closed to their actual in universe movie appearance.

Anyway, I am so totally hyped up about the new film. This does not happen to me that often, but it kind of reminds me of how excited I felt as a little kid in 1983 when Return of the Jedi come out. I don't know, maybe it is a tad pathetic that I feel like this as an adult, regardless, I cannot help it but I am totally immersed and preoccupied with this whole SW universe.

So what do you all think of the film: TFA?! and everything pertaining to the Lego sets from the movie?

ps.
Rey:   "there are stories about what happened."
Han:  "It is true.       All of it"

Why did the youtube clip not get imbedded? and the second set number: #75104 not become a link? Somehow I cannot change this?!

It'll be interesting to see why Luke isn't in the official movie poster.

    Or is he?

I don't see how they could make a story of Luke turning to the dark side believable.

I find it really odd that he's not in the poster when his name got second top billing after Harrison Ford.

    Strange.

Sure they could.  So long as there is lots of lens-flare.

(In all seriousness, there could be a very nice plot of Luke trying to prevent 'worse' uses of the Force by turning the Force into a folk tale that nobody would take seriously and pursue.)

    @SuperTramp
Yes, that is indeed odd Luke not being on the poster. Mark Hamill narrates teaser nr. 2 and it would be quite bewildering if he had turned to the dark side. The hooded seated figure laying his prosthetic right hand on R2D2, I think, must be Luke Skywalker. When he says: "my sister has it" while you see one organic female left hand (Leia), with lots of bracelets on the arm, hand a lightsaber to a another female (Rey) on film, it would be very surprising if Luke now will be at odds with all his friends and family from the OT.

Yeah, I also wonder how they could make such a twist in the story believable, if this should be the case.

Also shouldn't the Tie-fighter Lego pilot minifigs from #75101 have some red markings on their helmets, and have been made from pearl gunmetal dark-grey ABS instead of black ABS?

I won't be surprised if Luke is the 'bad' Jedi. How did some random new bad guy get a hold of Vader's melted helmet? If he is bad, it will be interesting to see if they can make it believable.

Or Luke dies, the new guy holding Darths helmet and setting out to "finish what he started"- kill all the Jedi.

No, not that bit. Check the trailer at 1:41 when you see Kylo Ren's shuttle land, and the wings fold up to vertical position. The cockpit has a much wider red view-screen (if that red bit is actually the view-screen and not a paint-job on the hull of the craft), and the angles are also much more sleek as opposed to #75104 square front of the ship. The wings also fold up similar to the old Imperial shuttle, even though they may not fold outward all the way down as that OT spaceship does.

I don't see how this changes the likelihood that LEGO was working with preliminary concepts.

On the topic of plot, etc., I could speculate all day. But I'm just going to ignore it for now and be entertained with few preconceptions when I finally see the movie.

    @GIR3691
Huh?! LOL, I see you edited your text. Now my response to you about what you thought was the bridge of the stardestroyer does not make as much sense.

You now wrote: "Lego was working with preliminary and unfinished reference material."

I know, and I think Lucasfilm should have been more trustful towards TLG and how top-secret they are (well most of the time) about what they are working on. That way TLG could very well have designed these sets and the minifigs with a higher level of movie authenticity/accuracy. Don't get me wrong I still like my TFA Lego sets, but I would have even liked them better. Also people who have not yet bought these sets might now have (more) second thoughts, because some of them obviously lack essential details and features which are highly characteristic of these spaceships.

    ---

I also noticed that at the end of the trailer Kylo Ren engaging Finn in a lightsabre duel is shown from the back without his helmet/mask, and that he has wavy long black/dark brown hair. So I am sure TLG will release him in some future set with a fleshy head with face print(s) and hairpiece.

Well other toy manufacturers apparently (for sake of reference/comparison) , who I guess also must have faced similar ordeals having to work with preliminary concepts, managed to get certain things TLG missed out on right,  such as Hasbro on their TFA First Order Special Forces Tie-Fighter:
    http://kastorskorner.com/wp/2015/09/14/force-awakens-order-tie-fighter/
Of course I do not know how long it takes them to design and manufacture their toys compared to TLG!?

Maybe Luke sees the Force gets subjugated by a monolithic banking empire bent on destroying the galaxy and he decides he must follow his father's footsteps to free everyone from evil.

Either way I don't think I will see this movie, Star Wars ended after 4,5,6 for me
  • bandit778bandit778 Member Posts: 2,398
All the speculation in the world will not stop me seeing this film (& the 5 that are supposed to follow).
I look forward to going and seeing and forming my own opinion as I have done with the previous 6 films.
I have been a Star Wars nut ever since the 1st film came out ( yes I am that old).
I personally think that the modern internet world of rumours and speculation makes it to easy to be fussy as when I was a nipper(hits passing person with walking stick while mumbling), all we got were the official trailers and maybe a small segment of air time on Swap Shop on a Saturday morning. The anticipation for Empire and Jedi went through the roof without us knowing the who done what or whose playing who. We still enjoyed the film's just as much, if not more.
And so I go to bed with my cup of cocoa and my werthers original, blissfully ignorant but really looking forward to going to the cinema in December.

Maybe I saw a comment about this somewhere else...  Anyway, one question people have had is whether we will get to see Kylo Ren without his mask.  Check at 1:58-1:59 in the trailer.

I've watched this trailer at least 40 times already. I'm beyond excited for this.

I thought Abrams freaking nailed the Star Trek reboot - loved both films. I have all the faith in the world in that guy now and I think Episode VII is going to be nothing short of great.

I guess @Dougout is/was only enthusiastic about the OT (original trilogy), and only felt compelled to voice this.

I on the other hand love both the OT as well as the PT (prequel trilogy). Of those two trilogies the OT is of course my favourite. I don't feel like elaborating on all the things of the PT that are considered to be subpar. Personally I really took an interest in, and really liked the political back-story of machinations, intrigue, and the collapse of the Republic. A fact is the OT is much more cherished, and considered by many to be among the gems of cinematography.

I am really excited there will be no less then five new star wars films on their way, next to the cartoon series SW Rebels which is entertaining and well written and animated. However, somehow my expectations are also quite high for this new trilogy, so I hope they will be met. I don't know why I did not have such high expectations at the time with the PT, but it gave me this 'happy go lucky' attitude walking into the theatre eager to see what the origins of the story I already was so familiar with was all about. I guess this might also be why contrary to others, who in 1999 felt such great dismay and were so disappointed with the Phantom Menace and even the following two parts only like the OT, and may even have no interest in these films, I still enjoy the PT films too.

    ---

I am also really curious about supporting (minor?!) characters from TFA, such as Teedo and his semi-mechanical Luggabeast, and how they will look in Lego form, and into what kind of Lego set these characters will appear.

I'm trying to keep my expectations in check - I think it'll be good, but I don't want to go in with too much hype in my head and dislike it because I'm wanting too much - but it's getting increasingly hard for me to not just give in and hope it'll be amazing.  I love how coy the teasers and trailers have been with actual facts as well - Age of Ultron did the same trick, gave the feel of the film but left really major set pieces untouched which were amazing when they came in the film itself.  That's quite a thing in a day when trailers too often spoil in their zeal to sell.  I know next to nothing about Rey, Finn, and Kylo Ren beyond a couple of superficial character beats and some vague informed guesses, but I'm totally on board with them as characters I want to get right into the heads of.

Needless to say, I'm going to be buying the hell out of all the Lego.

New trailer gave me goosebumps everytime I saw it, I may have to sneak to the cinema to see it myself before the planned family day out to see it. Intrigued to see what the new sets will be once we see the full film. As for the whole luke thing, I think its a way of building hype. Luke being the baddie has been talked about for ages and I suspect they intentionally didn't put him in the poster etc to fuel that. I suspect he has a small part who saves the day in the end. Sith lord v young Jedi? Its a red win every time unless blue has help!

I love the original trilogy and I don't understand how people can dismiss a film (the new one) that they've never seen just because it comes after the originals!

Anyways, the trailer looks great and I love the theories going around about the plot - it certainly looks like Luke is with R2D2 with the metal hand. Kylo Ren (assuming that's him at the end) looks like Jon Snow from Game of thrones.

Really looking forward to seeing what they've done with the theme.

The trailer also gave me major chills and was everything I hoped for and more. I'm of the opinion that Luke has hidden himself away ala Yoda to keep what happened with his father from happening again, and to end the Sith/Jedi war that had gone on for millenia. Of course with the Knights of Ren and the First Order, that old Force war is awakening once more(see what I did there). I would say a major plot point would be that Rey, Finn, Han, and Chewie are searching for Luke to teach Rey and Finn the ways of the force to combat this new threat i.e. many different fantasy/sci-fi plots where the forces of good are handpicked(by the Force this time) to combat evil.

Got me thinking, there are children now for whom this will be their first Star Wars film. And one day, they'll come to their parents and ask about the stories they've heard of a time before this, about stupid accents and floppy ears and slapstick comedy, and the parents will hang their heads and say "It's all true. All of it."

Initially I felt pretty meh after watching the new trailer.  But then going back and scouring each sequence for additional info, I'm a little excited for it.  Also a little miffed that they gave away the death of Chewbacca, though multiple sites seemed to have figured that was going to happen from expanded universe text (though the EU stuff has been declared non-canon by Disney).

    Someone's death is discussed above.

Yeah, I don't see why the events in an EU book released 16 years ago would have any relevance to what happens in TFA. It's not exactly new news that Chewbacca died in the EU. And from where I'm sitting, that doesn't look like Chewbacca that Rey is crying over.

I was going to get tickets for the midnight showing here in the UK, as I went to the midnight showing of the last three that were in theatres (when I lived in Canada).  But my boyfriend flat out refused.  So now I have tix to see it at 7.30 on the Thursday and am contemplating going by myself at midnight... but that would be annoyingly expensive as I ad have to cab home!

I have complete faith in JJ Abrams at this point in his career outside of Star Trek Into Darkness.  But besides that, my childhood was satiated with the prequel trilogy and so far it looks like my adulthood will be full of these movies and spinoffs until I drop dead and that is fine by me!!  It's weird but I honestly think we can trust Disney to pump out quality star wars flicks every year or so.

Anyways, I got tickets to one of the marathons outside Philadelphia for $50 per and the start time on the ticket says 4 AM.....On top of all that, I live outside Boston so I need to figure out timing a drive down 95 to pick up a college friend in NJ on Wednesday, somehow sleeping, and then driving an hour or so into PA to catch the marathon.  And for all this I'll probably only get a cheap looking lanyard or something from Regal.  But it will be ABSOLUTELY worth it.

Plus I get to drive home Friday, work a chaotic weekend at the theater I work at and then catch it in IMAX with the fam on Sunday!
