Here are all 5 Scoobys
Even though we have 5 unique Scoobys in the sets now. The Scooby with his teeth bared is really a combo of two of the others. So we have 4 unique heads and 2 unique bodies.
- Gandalf has a new head.
- Bad Cop and WyldStyle are the same figures as in set 70819. They just showed the alternate faces and I missed it.
- Batman, Legolas, Scooby, Gandalf are all have something new about them.
*If I buy a pack then then remove the figure, can the game still be played with the disc?
if so it may be an option to buy new then sell the rest in eBay
The problem with this sort of technology is it's all just NFC, so if you have an NFC phone there will inevitably be apps that will broadcast the same information that the NFC chip on the device would.
Therefore, all the values are in the minifig, because it's trivial (although possibly illegal) to replicate the the rest of it using technology most people have at home anyway.
Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but I just can't see there being any kind of worthwhile sellers market for just the discs, but then, all sorts of stuff gets shifted on eBay for peanuts, so who knows.
Amazon, Gamestop, BestBuy, Target
I was going to sell mine and then I saw how cool they looked and said I guess I am keeping them.
Side question: Any of the packs exclusive to a particular store? TRU does not have Dr Who.
Bear in mind that there is a Doctor Who themed level in the Starter Pack in which the Doctor shows up as a character. So if you've seen Doctor Who related content in game reviews that would probably be the reason.
There ARE some store exclusive packs. Though the only ones I know of are the Jay and Laval fun packs, which are exclusive to Toys 'R' Us in North America.
On that note, I am still quite surprised that all three Chima packs include unique figs. You'd think they'd just reuse the fire CHI costumes from this year and last year, but nope, they gave each character a brand-new torso. Whereas the Ninjago figs, representing a far more popular theme, all seem to be exact copies of figs from other sets. Kinda peculiar...
I think it's more a case where Toys R Us (a dedicated toy retailer) recognizes the niche value of Lego's original IPs (even the on-its-way-out Chima theme), even in a game which seems to revolve around licensed characters for the most part.
Ah - all of these are for kids. I never lose sight of that!
However, this being LEGO, maybe it doesn't go the route of "normal" video games and retains its $100 price point. Maybe Dimensions Part 2 (with redesigned magic portal) isn't released and they choose to add on to the game simply through character fun packs etc.
Regardless, for all those solely interested in the figures, I'm sure my boys would be happy to take all those nasty games discs off your hands.
Even so, I can believe there might be price reductions for the LEGO Dimensions in the future, just by virtue of the technology of the Toy Pad getting cheaper. The cost of LEGO bricks tends to stay fairly stable from year to year, aside from inflation. But digital technology is a much different story. Just look at how many video game console prices tend to fall after they've been out for a while.
As I understand it, the LEGO Dimensions Toy Pad is more complex than its Skylanders or Disney Infinity counterparts just by virtue of it being used to do more things in the game (meaning the different positions on the toy pad make a much bigger difference than in Disney Infinity which just has two interchangeable spots to place figures and one to place level tokens). It's got a bunch of colored lights to boot.
Aside from the bricks, that complexity might be another factor driving up the cost of the LEGO Dimensions starter pack compared to its competitors. But that's the sort of thing that could easily get less expensive with time, and I imagine it would be in LEGO Dimensions' best interest if it saw a price reduction to reflect that.
I like the idea of the forward compatibility, it does make it seem slightly better value (though still way too expensive compared to other TTL) but ultimately I can't get on board with the idea until I see the second game.
To be clear, with Infinity you don't need to buy a new starter pack each time. Just a level pack and copy of the game disc. I don't believe any future steps forward in Dimensions will be any cheaper than that.
The infinity board has been forward compatible. Even all the characters are forward compatible. The reality though is that you basically get a better deal just buying a new starter pack, even on day one.
Is that right @cheshirecat ? I thought I'd read some complaints about the first and second games not being fully compatible, although now I think about it that might have just been something to do with characters from Cars not being usable in any other setting or might have been about newer characters not being back compatible....people whining about a game I have little interest in tends to end up as like background noise in my memory...
Still with the way that it's been promoted (while not mentioned in any trailer, all the developer videos seem to at least mention the forward compatibility) if they bring out a second game and it requires 3 new main characters to be bought, you're basically going to be buying a new starter pack every time, so it wouldn't really worth them mentioning. Why are there so many Skylanders games? Why is there Disney Infinity 3...keep producing the games, keep raking in more money.
All characters from previous versions of infinity will work but only in the sandbox stlye toybox part of infinity not the play sets (levels). So none of the marvel superheroes characters can appear in the star wars story mode of DI3 but they can play alongside darth vader et al in the toybox and toybox games.
Indeed, the play sets require the correct characters, not just from the correct version of DI but the correct story. So for example ironman works in the avengers, spiderman and GotG play sets of DI2 but captain america only the avengers, groot only GotG etc. Although this seems to be relaxed a bit in DI3.
Another aspect, and probably what people complained about is that a DI1 play set (level) wont work in DI2 or 3. Similarly a DI2 play set wount work in DI3.
In terms of hardware if you have the board from DI1 then it will work on DI2 or DI3. you would need to buy the disc and to play more than just the toybox you would need to buy a play set which unlocks that story/level and comes with 2 characters to play.
So its entirely possible for DI to say that you don't need to buy a new starter pack each time as well, and to be honest I don't believe that Dimensions will continue much beyond the current announcements without a new Dimensions 2 game disc being sold.
It seems to me that while level packs might add a bit of life to the game, they would probably struggle to do a big multiverse story line with just a level pack and would want to do another full game if this one sells well.
I'm still massively undecided on the whole thing but ultimately the further I look down this rabbit hole, the more convinced I am that the biggest issue is just the ridiculous pricing.
At Christmas, when grandpa buys lil Johnny the latest Skylanders for $75 it comes in big box with new characters and new portal.
On the other hand, when grandpa buys 2 LEGO Dimensions expansion packs + 1 character pack for $75, lil Johnny gets 3 small boxes containing 5 figs + 5 minibuilds.
Assuming the same hours of enjoyment, which product would AVERAGE consumers perceive as better value?
The newer gandaldf faces look similiar, but they have printing on both sides. :)
