Making Sand Red 1x2 Plates

Because LEGO stopped production on sand red pieces about 15 years ago, 1x2 plates in that color cost $3 each in the US! So I took matters into my own hands :D

    Gasp!

I went a different direction and bought 2*2s and 1*3 inverted slopes to make a modular facade with and just stuck all the slopes backwards into the building. Such a lovely color.

I have two sand red 1x6 bricks I got in a bulk lot... someday I'll use them in something!

Is sand red one of the colors that can’t be produced?  Alway seemed to me that both sand red and purple would be great in house builds.

Seems to be fairly rough grit sandpaper that was used initially. Likely needed with the bumps that were left initially. I'm sure finishing with a finer grit would give a really nice finish to the altered side. Certainly something I might have to explore as I absolutely love Sand Red but can't stomach the prices.

I want to cry seeing these roughed up so much.

As an experiment, I took some really scuffed up old 1x8 black bricks and started with 1000 grit sandpaper, eventually using polish and like 5K grit sand paper and some wet sanding. It was time consuming and the results were decent, but a lot of effort to mostly restore a set of brick.. Useful though if they are older bricks and you need them for a specific time or era of LEGO set.

    That's almost sacrilege!

I always try to use a couple of really rare pieces in my larger builds. My Palace of Westminster has a Sand Green 2x12 plate in it (check out how rare it is - no idea where I got it from!) As well as a couple of Trans-Clear 2x3 plates.

I really need to add a rare piece to my current build...

Rare? It doesn't list in any set! Cool find.

I have a Dremel I use to "modify" elements when the need arises.

Why did Lego feel the need to add an extra logo in between the studs on that part?

Slightly less plastic and additional advertising.

The only theory I’ve got is that someone decided that that part needed to have the copyright symbol on it. But not all of that part, just some 🤪. BL only has one entry for it, which surprises me.

Because they knew evancelt was going to cut them up to create new parts. No matter how small he goes, every piece will have logos!

Not to hijack your thread @evancelt...

But I've been thinking that I want to try to make a "human body" version of MetalBeard from TLM, and I'm wondering what it would take, and if it'd even be possible to modify the metal beard piece to work with a minifig torso...

Yes, I think a Dremel would have done a better job cutting these down. You could use a thin cutting wheel I would think, something like the 409 size.

I would guess one problem with a Dremel is holding everything in the right position to make a straight cut that is aligned with the edge of the plate nicely. At least I’m sure i would screw it up!
