Third-largest set ever. Fine. Wonderful. But I'm still scratching my head a bit over the size and cost.

^oh right, just the links broken, here: https://twitter.com/LEGO_Group/

not sure if that was just me.  Is it me or is that the spitting image of the original ideas build... royalties? Branding going to be ideas?  Gonna blow the top end piece count for ideas sky high!

Love the deep red color over the Ideas one.

I'm liking it so far. Is that red or dark orange?

Dark Red. I was really hoping for some high quantity dark red masonry bricks.

It still could be an elaborate hoax!

Btw, how is it that the real building hasn't installed a permanent Ghostbusting sign hanging over the door?

I like it, but too much $ for me for a modular add-in to my city that I will not be playing with. Maybe I will bricklink the exterior only at some point with minimal interior (and no minifigs as I have Ecto-1). I cannot wait to see more pics though.

    no interiors yet?

Obviously, someone at Entertainment Weekly has hacked LEGO's Twitter account.

This pretty much sums up my feelings about the set. I realize there's a film tie-in next year, but this seems like an awfully large set for the IP. The Ecto-1 must have sold very well.

I'm looking at Fire Brigade on my shelf, and thinking that for $150, it has the same general theme (and impact.) Why did this set have to b $350 and sooooooo huge. Don't get me wrong, the designers did a wonderful job, the set looks great. And I'll eventually buy it because modular type buildings are one of the few things I still collect. But $350 is a lot of money...

Will be very curious to see this in a modular layout just to see how people decide to fit it in. I haven't started building any of my mods yet so I'm not sure how I would fit a building like this one.

Cue the Ecto-1 going out of stock on S@H. Oh wait, it's already there.

TRU still has available...and at $50 (discounted of course).

Damn! January will be expensive and it's usually the month I'm skintest (if that's a word!)!

I'm still glad this comes out 6 months before the new movie ruins the francise forever.

This is where I'm at. For $350, I can think of many other sets that could have been made or considered.  I do find it a bit shocking that they invested that much into what I would have thought was a fairly unproven IP. I never considered Ecto a huge seller out there.   Glad for those that plan  to get this set.

@thelonetensor The firehouse actually does have the sign, but on the wall just inside the main door to the firehouse, so it's there if you walk by when the door is open. At least it was there a few years ago.

It looks to me like it's on a 32x32 + 16x32 like the Ideas submission.

the building itself is 20 wide, 42 deep, and about 36 bricks high
  • prevereprevere Member Posts: 2,923
Sounds about the same height as FB, but with much larger depth.

Will have to make a hot dog cart that Slimer can pop up out of now. If only I knew where l  could get more sausage pieces.

Its real, can not believe it.

Am very happy with this set, contrary to other people I can not think of 3 other sets that I would have preferred instead. I did see the original movie in the cinema as a kid, maybe that helped.

Think it fits very well with the modular,it makes it all a bit more playfull.

If you don't have anything with ghostbusters then I can imagine this set being a disappointment but for me it is one of the best sets they could possibly release.

Not sold on the dark red,the original building is clearly orange. Firedepartment always is red, think making it orange would be a nice touch and make it a bit different but will probably buy it regardless. Will be expensive, brick bank and now this.

I really like it, judging by the piece count it must have loads of interior detail ( or 1 x 1 plates ). Definite buy for me either way.

    Slimed peter venkman looks fantastic.

    FB:  32x18x~30 high
    HQ: 42x20x~36 high

so volume wise, it's about 1.75 time bigger, for 2.33 times the price.  Better be a heck of a detailed interior

What I don't get is how the LEGO one has 4,634 pieces and this MOC has 2800+ pieces. Both are very close in design and the MOC one has a fully detailed interior.

Likely getting one. Looks to be a nice addition though I think it will be a monster sitting on someones layout compared to most other LEGO buildings.

    are there interior pics?

so far this looks a lot like sergios...gets a giant meh.  I do like dark red, however the dark orange was also nice :)

unless the interior is ridiculous, this will prolly be a pass.  Ill just bricklink the minifigs

Wow - I hadn't seen this MOC before, and that's a great point about what is possible with 2,800 pieces.

LEGO must have some incredible research that says sentimental 40-somethings will gladly spend $350 for this, for Ewok Village, Death Star, and so so so many other high priced sets.

I'm just wondering: where is the limit?

The design of the station outside looks good, (though maybe the colour seems a tad bright). However, I'm sad to say that I'm disappointed, as once again that bl**dy 80's cartoon continues to pollute the (proton) stream.

Don't get me wrong, The 'Real Ghostbusters' cartoon series was a bit of fun in the eighties for me as a child looking for anything remotely GB related - I enjoyed it even when they swapped voices mid-scene or got the colours mixed up between characters - and I even collected quite a few of the comics, and an easy to draw child-friendly cartoon ghost made sense to appeal to little kids back then.

But I watched it due to being a Ghostbusters FILM fan. Now that 30 years have passed I am thoroughly sick of seeing its ceaseless, festering influence continue to impact on every damn GB related product to come out since. Why won't it DIE!?!

Won't someone - please!? - cross the streams and destroy the awful thing in a nuclear blaze of protonic fury! :o)

But no... It seems we are destined - doomed even - for every license holder to insist on re-using that god(s)awful globule of guffawing snot for 'Slimer'. But it's simply wrong. Slimer looked nothing like that. *sigh*

I could understand repurposing the same jumpsuit colours, cartoony (ninjago) ghosts, and stuff from dimensions if they wanted to make this as cheaply as possible to appeal as a childrens set (from the 1980's) but this is not cheap, and at this price is one set for the adult collector of 2016. As fun as the 80's cartoon was, it is the FILM we're fans of - won't somebody get it bl**dy right for once!?

If this had movie-slimer, I'd buy it without thinking. Now? I'm having to pretend Lego have omitted to include the iconic Sedgwick Hotel ghost in their Ghostbusters set... again.

    :o)

thinking again, surface area is a better comparison than volume.  so, surface area of the 4 vertical walls:

    FB:  ~3000 1x1 bricks
    HQ: ~4464 1x1 bricks

so, about 1.5 times the surface area for 2.33 times the price.  Again, the interior better have a hell of a lot to it, even given time inflation and IP costs
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
^ I'd also add that the FB clearly has a much more detailed and intricate front exterior, and certainly uses many more parts on the front facade than any of the four walls of the HQ uses, so that makes the value ratio even worse than the 1.5/2.33 cited just above.

Again, we need to see the interior to understand what in the world justifies the $350 price tag.  Even the FB had a fair amount of interior detailing, and of course the old time fire truck to boot.

The funny part about the FB comparisons is that I'll probably sell my NIB copy to pay for the Ghostbusters set.

outside of the IP factor, this building is a complete bore.  I get the appeal of Ghostbusters, it's just unfortunate to me that the subject matter is just a big red/grey box with very little in the way of interesting architecture.

it's a big pass for me.
