That was slightly different as, whilst there were rumours of a replacement, they seem a bit more solid now.

Not sure where your reasoning is coming from. The Death Star only temporarily sold out everywhere in the US about 2 months ago and immediately jumped to 550-570 USD. Considering many folks also piled these up when you could also find them during 'BOGO50s', 'Buy two and get a third free' and other sale offers (before the ban in the US) and I doubt anyone is losing money on these if they are smart. Not seeing a drop on this one unless LEGO happens to make an almost identical Death Star to #10188 but with newer parts (which I would be surprised if LEGO does, but remains to be seen, as anything is possible).

It is amusing to see those who think those 'evil' resellers are going to be forever scarred and lose their shirts on such things. They are much smarter than that, and making money to them is making money, even if it is 'only' 25% of what they paid.

I agree.  I just purchased the Death Star yesterday with double VIP points.  I looked around on e-bay and elsewhere to see if I could get one new cheaper than S@H, and only saw prices higher than the S@H price!  I didn't buy to re-sell, I bought one to build and have my kids play with it (which is Lego's intended purpose for the set since it is not a model.

Once this does sell out, I'd expect the price to go up quite a bit.  I'm also expecting the next DS to be a UCS and so a model and not a play set.  I'm also expecting the price to be higher than $400 as Lego's prices have been going up as of late.  However, none of this matters to me since I got the set I wanted and I'm glad I didn't miss it at list price (minus the VIP points).

Anyone that thinks the current death star won't increase in price once it's gone is naive or ignorant or both. It is not a question of if, but how much. I'm not betting the bank on a massive increase but it will go up. You can count on that.

They didn't do re-releases then.

Same set; snazzy box; smart marketing - #75159 would sell like hot cakes at the moment; and an EOLed #10188 wouldn't.
