Death Star back from the dead

I must admit, I absolutely love the death star..... but I also love a lot of other Lego sets as well. Trying to justify to myself, let alone she who must be obayed, spending that amount of money on one set is quite hard, especially when I can get a couple of modulars or large technic sets for the same money.
I daresay that if it has finally gone there will be times I wish I had brought it, but being on a limited Lego budget and not having the space to display it for any length of time, I will have to put on my black arm band and bid it a fond farewell and pay the extortionate price it will have got to just as soon as those pesky lottery numbers come up.

I had one for awhile, enjoyed building it and playing with it for awhile. Ultimately though, it just took up too much space and my Lego focus shifted away from Star Wars toward building a modular city. I still have an X-Wing here and a Slave 1 there but I get more enjoyment out of MOCing my own buildings and vehicles and scenery than collecting Star Wars sets. My Lego funds are not limitless so I decided Death Star needed to go. Sold it on Craigslist for about the same as I paid for it so I pretty much got to rent it for a few months for free. Not a bad deal at all.

LEGO is the best, and no one set (no matter how bad or good it is) is going to change that :D
    True that!

It was my Autistic step son that bought it for me, when he was 6 he had an accident and was awarded compensation but he couldn't access it until he turned 18. Roll on 12 years to Feb '14 and him getting the compo, the first thing that he did as soon as the money was in his bank was to order it from S@H for me. I was shocked and overwhelmed by his generosity, I guess he wanted to make me happy and say thank you for being his career.
    Wow! Another amazing story! Beautiful.

Several years ago I bought 2 DS, BOGO 50% off from TRU.  This whole discussion is very depressing.  I hope I can get my original money back on the one I haven't built.

Keep in mind that most UCS sets are no longer in the "10***" string of numbers. The earliest I recall is that #75059 Sandcrawler was the earliest to start the "75***" trend.

You could basically get your money back now on the set. If it is indeed gone this time, you will have no problems making a some extra if you got it for 25% off.

Is it the same type of set as #10188 (collection of minifigure vignettes) or is it a miniscale model of a Death Star (like DS II was)?

Are you kidding me.... I totally called it. I just didn't expect a new one so soon.
Lego_Nerd98 said: I should probably get one, but just for the parts. I probably wouldn't set it up because Lego will probably come out with a new one in a couple of years.
But then we can go back to my old question:

If they come out with another updated Death Star, which of the three would blow up the other two?

    UCS Microfighter Death Star.

Star Wars Episode VIII, Return of the Death Star.

Yeah it's probably my biggest pet hate with Lego. I wish that TLG would have taken the UCS tag a little more seriously and set some internal ground rules about its use from the start.

IMO it should be reserved for the larger detailed (for Lego) scale models. Play features, & minifigs need not apply.

Anyway we will have to see the new DS before we make judgment on it.

    UCS Microfighter Death Star.

Star Wars Episode VIII, Return of the Death Star.
Since it is a Sith invention - more likely 'Revenge of the Death Star'... or 'Death Star III - The Search for Spoc... Sidious'

Death Star III - Force Lightning Boogaloo...

Anyway, I consider the UCS Sandcrawler a playset, so it shouldn't be surprising that the largest playsets will be badged UCS going forward.

And I will grudgingly buy them...

  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
^I fully disagree. The Sandcrawler is a vehicle set before it's a playset. It's features just happen to make it capable of being used in a playset way. It is not the same as Ewok Village or the Death Star.

^ And EV is a location that also happens to be a play set.
  • VortexVortex Member Posts: 342
^ I believe it's (depicts, with only a certain degree of accuracy) only a very small part of the Village itself ..it does not ,by any stretch m capture the entire village itself.

the UCS Sand Crawler , leaves no detail to guesswork

I BL'ed MS, so, yes, it is a modular.  Oh, wait... I BL'ed it, so does that mean I don't own it?  In that case, MS is most definitely NOT a modular...

I think all modulers should be classed as UCS sets anyway due to being primarily display sets for collectors.........

This is not a Market Street argument at all - for two reasons:

    1) Lego identifies Market Street as a modular.

    2) Lego identifies the UCS Sandcrawler as an Ultimate Collector's Series set.

Besides, there are other non-vehicle (non-playset) UCS SW entries.  (Yoda, Grievous, Maul...)

I'm slightly bemoaning that I'll probably be compelled to buy playsets because the sticker on the outside of the box says UCS, where in years past it would not have has such a distinction.

The world we live in where a sticker/label can push a person to buy a $300 set.

I find that if you truly enjoy a set and you are capable of buying it, then by all means purchase it. The experience of building it combined with having the final product on display is worth much more then having thrown a large amount of cash at something just to have a completed series. To me, purchasing something that I will enjoy is worth much more than having my reason of purchase being that "I am a completist" or that it is an exclusive of some kind.

Now I am not saying that there is anything wrong with completists, in fact I think it very cool whenever I see a large collection of large sets. I find that by following whatever makes you happy is a great way to live a fulfilling life. However in my opinion, I would rather save my money for a set that I will enjoy rather than feeling the need to complete a series.

So? The Darth Maul bust doesn't capture the whole of Darth Maul, so is that less UCS than Yoda?

^  No shirt, no shoes, no UCS?

^^  Ah, I see you are one of the 'imagination' / 'open-the-box-and-build-the-set' people.

    To each their own!

I'm not sure it would be, as the last one released was a small one (in the Planet series). Although that seemed to sell very well too.

Well , thinking aloud , it says Death Star plainly , not Death Star 2 or Star Killer, so that ought to eliminate them especially SK.  Also , you'd imagine that lego would like to wait on the eventual success of the film before launching big Titans like theses models based on SK. It's time is yet to come.

even the medium sized models like the new MF , I'm sure you'll agree , the demand will actually surge and reach its peak end December thru  January.

So I'm hoping it is the original DS and my mind says it will likely be a 70 percent display with only some play value ... I'm infact imagining a DS which may be incorporated with a Hunging mechanism , to show off some play features inside and perhaps some micro build ships on the outside.

This has been erected very recently in a galaxy close by ; could this be a sign of things to come ??

Is there any doubt about its success? It could be awful and still it will be successful.

It still took over $1billion, so pretty successful. And lego related, small to large Episode I sets seem to sell OK (although they lack a modern premium model).

  • SumoLegoSumoLego Member Posts: 15,241
That's exactly correct.  Wildly succesful, but most casual and non-casual fan don't like it.
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,556
    Yep.

It's interesting to see how big the marketing drive is BEFORE the film is released too. Huge amounts seem to have been sold before anyone really knows much about the characters or story line. If they are doing a big set from this one, it is already developed and probably being manufactured. I doubt they'll be waiting to see how the film is accepted by critics or public. It's how the toys are selling that they'll care about.
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,836
So people are also assuming that 'Death Star' is not just a generic moniker to attach to the set to not spoil any references to the new movie?
It would also make sense that it was not released until well after the movie is released for those that are trying to avoid spoilers (which is nearly impossible to do but hey I'm sure there are those trying).

If really only the original DS, Seeing previous SW 'USC' large scale models I would not be surprised if it is a display  DS (like DS II was) with some figures on a display placard like the Tumbler has.

The deathstar will be the very first lego set that will drop in price after it has been discontinued.

Its been stocked to the moon and beyond and lego just keeps making them.
Lego will stop making them when all demand has faded. And then, when all demand has faded, the resellers step into the market hoping to make a 25% return on their 4 year investment. But they wont be able to sell as all demand has faded.

They keep holding on but as the supply is about 50 times the yearly demand the price has only one way to go. It will be a landmark event in lego investing.

Thumbs up for the deathstar, I love you baby:)

Not sure where your reasoning is coming from. The Death Star only temporarily sold out everywhere in the US about 2 months ago and immediately jumped to 550-570 USD. Considering many folks also piled these up when you could also find them during 'BOGO50s', 'Buy two and get a third free' and other sale offers (before the ban in the US) and I doubt anyone is losing money on these if they are smart. Not seeing a drop on this one unless LEGO happens to make an almost identical Death Star to #10188 but with newer parts (which I would be surprised if LEGO does, but remains to be seen, as anything is possible).

It is amusing to see those who think those 'evil' resellers are going to be forever scarred and lose their shirts on such things. They are much smarter than that, and making money to them is making money, even if it is 'only' 25% of what they paid.
