I daresay that if it has finally gone there will be times I wish I had brought it, but being on a limited Lego budget and not having the space to display it for any length of time, I will have to put on my black arm band and bid it a fond farewell and pay the extortionate price it will have got to just as soon as those pesky lottery numbers come up.
I wanted the DS ever since it came out, but I couldn't buy it as I just couldn't justify the price tag. I'd always look at it in the Lego shop, always say that it was missing from my collection and that I needed it etc
It was my Autistic step son that bought it for me, when he was 6 he had an accident and was awarded compensation but he couldn't access it until he turned 18. Roll on 12 years to Feb '14 and him getting the compo, the first thing that he did as soon as the money was in his bank was to order it from S@H for me. I was shocked and overwhelmed by his generosity, I guess he wanted to make me happy and say thank you for being his career.
Great story. Quite a girl you got there!
I'll get my coat...
75159 The Death Star
from J2G
But then we can go back to my old question:
Star Wars Episode VIII, Return of the Death Star.
Yeah it's probably my biggest pet hate with Lego. I wish that TLG would have taken the UCS tag a little more seriously and set some internal ground rules about its use from the start.
IMO it should be reserved for the larger detailed (for Lego) scale models. Play features, & minifigs need not apply.
Anyway we will have to see the new DS before we make judgment on it.
There'll be blood on the streets.
"...and with the 8 planets aligned after waiting a millennia, Star Killer nails them all with a single blast..."
/And there was much rejoicing!
Death Star III - Force Lightning Boogaloo...
And I will grudgingly buy them...
the UCS Sand Crawler , leaves no detail to guesswork
Now running away whilst ducking and weaving in the hope of avoiding getting hit by anything thrown at my ever retreating shaped cloud of dust. :)
1) Lego identifies Market Street as a modular.
2) Lego identifies the UCS Sandcrawler as an Ultimate Collector's Series set.
Besides, there are other non-vehicle (non-playset) UCS SW entries. (Yoda, Grievous, Maul...)
I'm slightly bemoaning that I'll probably be compelled to buy playsets because the sticker on the outside of the box says UCS, where in years past it would not have has such a distinction.
I find that if you truly enjoy a set and you are capable of buying it, then by all means purchase it. The experience of building it combined with having the final product on display is worth much more then having thrown a large amount of cash at something just to have a completed series. To me, purchasing something that I will enjoy is worth much more than having my reason of purchase being that "I am a completist" or that it is an exclusive of some kind.
Now I am not saying that there is anything wrong with completists, in fact I think it very cool whenever I see a large collection of large sets. I find that by following whatever makes you happy is a great way to live a fulfilling life. However in my opinion, I would rather save my money for a set that I will enjoy rather than feeling the need to complete a series.
^^ Ah, I see you are one of the 'imagination' / 'open-the-box-and-build-the-set' people.
To each their own!
Some of us enjoy possessing things and occassionally staring at shelving units full of non-descript brown shipping boxes.
even the medium sized models like the new MF , I'm sure you'll agree , the demand will actually surge and reach its peak end December thru January.
So I'm hoping it is the original DS and my mind says it will likely be a 70 percent display with only some play value ... I'm infact imagining a DS which may be incorporated with a Hunging mechanism , to show off some play features inside and perhaps some micro build ships on the outside.
This has been erected very recently in a galaxy close by ; could this be a sign of things to come ??
It's interesting to see how big the marketing drive is BEFORE the film is released too. Huge amounts seem to have been sold before anyone really knows much about the characters or story line. If they are doing a big set from this one, it is already developed and probably being manufactured. I doubt they'll be waiting to see how the film is accepted by critics or public. It's how the toys are selling that they'll care about.
It would also make sense that it was not released until well after the movie is released for those that are trying to avoid spoilers (which is nearly impossible to do but hey I'm sure there are those trying).
If really only the original DS, Seeing previous SW 'USC' large scale models I would not be surprised if it is a display DS (like DS II was) with some figures on a display placard like the Tumbler has.
The deathstar will be the very first lego set that will drop in price after it has been discontinued.
Its been stocked to the moon and beyond and lego just keeps making them.
Lego will stop making them when all demand has faded. And then, when all demand has faded, the resellers step into the market hoping to make a 25% return on their 4 year investment. But they wont be able to sell as all demand has faded.
They keep holding on but as the supply is about 50 times the yearly demand the price has only one way to go. It will be a landmark event in lego investing.
Thumbs up for the deathstar, I love you baby:)
Not sure where your reasoning is coming from. The Death Star only temporarily sold out everywhere in the US about 2 months ago and immediately jumped to 550-570 USD. Considering many folks also piled these up when you could also find them during 'BOGO50s', 'Buy two and get a third free' and other sale offers (before the ban in the US) and I doubt anyone is losing money on these if they are smart. Not seeing a drop on this one unless LEGO happens to make an almost identical Death Star to #10188 but with newer parts (which I would be surprised if LEGO does, but remains to be seen, as anything is possible).
It is amusing to see those who think those 'evil' resellers are going to be forever scarred and lose their shirts on such things. They are much smarter than that, and making money to them is making money, even if it is 'only' 25% of what they paid.
