I always chuckle when I see the "Hard to Find" tag on the Death Star. Any set out that long isn't all that hard to find.

By "hard to find" they mean it's hard to find someone who doesn't already own it.

Screw the scalpers, I hope TLG will redesign the DeathStar set, with an assortment of updated minifigs. I thought about getting this set earlier this year, when TLG had it on special offer, but when after contemplating it for a while in a lapse of judgement I wanted to get it, it was sold out. I am glad I did not buy it. I don't think it is a bad set, but it does look quite outdated. Not all new renditions/re-releases of SW sets are better, but the majority do have more appealing designs IMO, and with more eye for detail.
Too bad for people buying this set hoping it will be a good investment, instead of buying it because they want to build it and like it for what it is. Let TLG either continue to churn out more of these DeathStars, or ultimately redesign it and release a new version.
In the meanwhile I am glad I recently bought this instead #75093

Denied.   Ordered a Death Star the other day.  Just ordered a second one from s@h.
Order was canceled.    Said 1 per household.    So I got a second one from Amazon.   Same price.

This is exactly what is happening for next year. It's going to cost quite a bit (read significantly) more though.

Ask yourself - would you pay the original RRP plus reseller markup on ebay for a retired 10188, or would you pay that same price for a new updated set?

  • playwellplaywell Member Posts: 2,332
Do you have an idea of price then, but I also thought the new one would be bigger?
  • iso3200iso3200 Member Posts: 2,065
About £100 more in the UK. I have to wonder though with EP7 coming out, if this will in fact be the Starkiller base rather than another OT set. It could go either way.
  • playwellplaywell Member Posts: 2,332

Lego in the past have always given themselves a bit of time when its comes to D2Cs, they don't come out at the same time as a new line (thinking of LOTR, Harry Potter, SH) and don't come out at the same time as new films so that they can make sure they get it right. They wouldn't want a large set that is going to be around for years being inaccurate because its based on prelims. Also what if the film is bad, saying this all rules are out of the window when it comes to the new Star Wars films.

If I assume it is not a rhetorical question, even though I did. I would not give the 2008 set another thought. Even if I cannot afford the new one, given that if I do want to buy it, I then have to decide not to purchase and collect other sets for an extended period, in order to save for this new DS set.
At GBP275, which currently is +/- €390 it is cheaper than it is in NL where you need to pay €420 ordering it from LS@H.

If the new DS will cost GBP375 (+/-€531 at the moment), I don't see them selling many. Affluent collectors who are willing to spend much more on the aftermarket for MISB sets are, I think, a different as well as smaller group of people than the ones who are willing to part with their money for the already costly D2C sets from TLG, even if there is quite some overlap between the two.

If what you say is correct then that new set will be a lot more expensive than the current Helicarrier, Death Star, and the 2016 GB Firehouse HQ. Then again I might be mistaken seeing how many people immediately jumped in at €500 for a new game-console, or more than that for the latest smart phones etc.

They're doing *another* high end Death Star, after the last one's been available for about 7 years, but they won't do another high end Millenium Falcon?

^ It would seem so. My biggest problem with it is...

Why would a new one come out immediately following the discontinuation of the past one?

Seems like there would be more space between them.

Probably because it is a good seller (more than the reseller killer reason). Why space them out if there is a market for it. There is a continual market for things like police and fire trucks, so they don't disappear, they just reappear in a new incarnation almost seamlessly.

If it is updated, with updated minifigs and updated vignettes, I can see some people with the old buying the new too.

As an owner of the current DS I would have no issue buying a new one if it was a proper update, in the way that the latest falcon is a proper update from the previous, despite the fact the two sets aren't far apart in terms of time between them. And I doubt it will do much to the after market value of the old as they would be totally different sets.

new figures, new or enhances scenes, Lego have been doing that for years, what's not to love.
  • YodaliciousYodalicious Member Posts: 1,366

^ Oh, I'll buy the new one even though I own the old. I know myself and my lack of any sort of self-control for certain LEGO very well. But I still don't see a "Old Version Gone in December 2015/New Version Available in January 2016" happening. I could be wrong, and am in many instances, but I think there'd be a fairly big build up about the new one coming and as of right now all we have are unfounded rumors it seems.

That and (this is just me speculating/wondering) there could be a large SW set in the works for the new movies. Who knows.

Some things seem never to actually disappear, they just go briefly then reappear ... x-wings, tie fighters, landspeeders, even the good old escape pod recently. I guess we'll see if DS is one of these.

It could be worse.  Say Lego hires George Lucas and let's him loose to develop the Death Star Special Edition.

No, this is real. I've heard about it, too from a reliable source. No confirmation on number of parts or whether there would be new figures etc. but it is going to be a lot more expensive...

I'm entirely convinced that some time over the next 12-15 months we will see a big round ball of grey. I'm relatively convinced it WON'T be a Death Star. (Do I get cookies for such a 'no spoilers' post?)

Do you think sources could be revealed on a public forum :-o

    Just this....

It's from the same source that told me about the Detective Agency six months early and Scooby Doo, UCS Tie Fighter in Sept 2014, and Ferris Wheel months early. I posted about each of those on here, and was generally met with the same suspicion ;-) Same with the Snowspeeder for next year, and we now have a set number for that.

In fact the only thing they've got wrong so far was a set reveal for Oct which turned into being the Modular Bank only. But seems that the SW reveal was put back due to a brick shortage, which of course we know about now.

Take from it what you will. I'm hoping that someone on Eurobricks can corroborate soon, and the finer details will filter through and all come together.

@iso3200 any news about the supposed Big Ben set? I have a sneaking suspicion that with the GB Headquarters, this replacement Death Star, and the rumoured Big Ben set, we could well have three of the largest Lego sets ever, all released next year...

^^Unfortunately not. I've only heard there will be another landmark building like everyone else , but no confirmation of what it is :-(

I personally never bought into Tower Bridge or Sidney Opera House (though nearly), so whatever it is, I hope I'm not impressed again - for monetary reasons of course.

I think it's pretty much assumed by everyone that there'll be another fairground set next year, given that there's been one a year for the last two years.

I have to say I'm quite surprised you didn't think much of Tower Bridge - I have that on display, and it's a really nice set. I haven't built the Opera House yet (despite now owning it), although from what I've seen my expectations aren't as high for that.

I'd really like there to be a Big Ben set. I think if done at a decent scale, it could be really good. It wouldn't surprise me if such a set were over 5000 pieces.

So is the assumption that this is supposed to be a minifig scale DS? Or will it be like a DS II set from long ago (miniscale)?
I wonder what the value will be for the Death Star once it disappears from the shelves.

It only temporarily sold out where LEGO showed it as 'Sold Out' but put a note up on the site that '...more were on the way', and the price still went up to 550-570 USD on eBay (that is, sold for that on eBay), so there is a benchmark out there for what the immediate return would be.

If there really is another minifig scale DS to replace this one then expect the price to not really rise on the original, unless of course the price LEGO charges for the new one is 500-600 USD (or more and knowing LEGO SW prices lately they will charge 600-700 USD for a new one), then you may be able to sell an old for more than its original retail but less than what the retail will be on the new set.

Now, if the set is really a mini scale model, ala DS II, then I would say the minifig scale one will rise despite the new version.

  • TigerMothTigerMoth Member Posts: 2,343
If there is a new comparable Death Star, any rise in price of the old one will depend on what the new set is like. If it is deemed to be "better"", then the old one is quite likely to fall out of favour except with out-and-out collectors. There may even be a drop if people try to sell the old one to fund the new. On the other hand, if the new one is unpopular, the price of the old one will go through the roof as it becomes clear that there is now a limited supply of the more desirable version (the fear of which is also what fuels a price rise when they temporarily go out of stock).
  • TheBigLegoskiTheBigLegoski Member Posts: 1,437
^In that worst case scenario with the new one being deemed undesirable, you might as well just MOC your own DS, chances are you already have a whole bunch of SW minifigs to put in it.
But who knows, time will tell.

I don't think that Lego can screw the new Death Star up so badly that it would have folks clamoring to buy the old one. Heck. Even if they go the winter toy shop refresh route, it will kill the value of the old one. Actually, that's what resellers should fear the most from the new iteration. Similar look and style, but with modern building techniques and new minifigures.

If the new set turns out to be the starkiller, the value of the Death Star would shoot through the moon. That won't happen though. There are millions of dollars at stake here and this is their flagship set after all. I just don't see Lego and Disney taking a big risk on this one.

    Something's odd.

"Temporarily out of stock" suggests there's more coming.  That may mean it's coming from America, because they still have stock, but seeing as it applies everywhere in Europe and in Oz, perhaps it means there's another production run.

And what does "soon" mean? We'll soon be discussing the 2020 sets.

TLG have been doing some odd things recently. Some people think that's to catch resellers on the hop. Perhaps "retiring soon" means "we've just produced another 50,000 copies, but then that's it".
