I’m a bit premature with this...

Someone a short drive from me is selling the Queen Anne’s Revenge for £70. Typical. I’ve messaged him to see if he’ll take a PayPal deposit but I doubt he will.

Someone please offer some words of wisdom along the lines of me being a hero and saving lives by not leaving my home.

Would you go out for a bargain set?

Found an Ebay listing for $125 with queen anne's revenge, whitecap bay, Pirate Ship Ambush, Town Plan 'Cinema', T-6 Jedi fighter, and probably about $200 of small batman and city sets. Was super excited but trying to be a savvy ebay bidder and wait til the last minute backfired when they ended the auction 8 hours early. I'm going to be bothered by it for awhile.

He kindly messaged me to say that the Queen Anne’s Revenge sold yesterday after he reduced the price to £50. It was complete and had the box. Someone broke the government’s advice for an absolute bargain.

Maybe they have a different definition of "essential".

Or maybe they collected during their exercise session, staying 2m apart while collecting from the doorstep.

The front page article got me fired up about this - At xmas I went to the Lego store and bought my wife a few sets and spent my budget. I was walking out and they had one Lego 70840 for like 100 off and I stared at it for a few mins and like an idiot said "There will be time after the holidays". But there wasn't and every time I see a picture of it and look it up and it is around past $500 :(

Brickset has new photo of 1610.  This tube was recently sold on eBay and current owner outbid me.  Not overly happy to be looking at a reminder of recent lose like that.  On the other hand it's not that important of piece for my collect, I already have both 610 versions.  It also wasn't a complete set as far as I could tell.
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
Not so much one that got away, but one (actually 4) that came back!
I found four packs of these hidden away in a box in a box in a drawer. I knew I had some somewhere, I don't think I'd seen these ones since about 2014.

I message her just now to see what's going on. She says SOLD & it was picked up already 😡🤬😡

    #8840 ($20 on BL)
#8720 ($105 on BL & the ONLY ONE in the USA)

^^I've just come to accept this as the standard for 90% of my interactions on the FB marketplace. Quick response at first, then silence, ultimately followed by a message that it has been sold to someone else.

Sorry you weren't able to snag it!

There are several #8720 available on ebay, but of course not for that kind of a deal. Only mentioning it because the one that was on Bricklink is now gone.
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
You may well find the other person offered them $15 instead, so they went with them.

OK this isn't allowing me to post pics but there is a #42077 in a clear store display case near me. The seller is asking $50 but is impossible to deal with. I've decided I'm done playing tag with him.

"Doesn't  understand" PayPal or Venmo, or that he can just give me his address & leave the damn thing outside & through the wizardry of Google Maps I'll exchange it for the cash. Told him I've done it SEVERAL times that way.

Have gone back & forth with him all week on it (communication spotty at best). Told him the best time for me to pickup was the past 2 days. Now he says his wife is sick & "doesnt want to deal with this right now." "DEAL" with what??? It's not even a hassle!!

it's in Stillwater MN even though the FB Mktplace listing says Grantsburg  Wisc (which I was ALSO willing to travel to). If you'd even like to pass it on to me I can deal in your favor- you'd have earned it by actually getting it away from this goofball.

If my wife was sick, I wouldn't want to be dealing with selling anything either, regardless of what you may consider "no hassle".

I also wouldn't be particularly fussed about dealing with somebody who demands payment by some mechanism that I (for whatever reason) don't want to use, or demand I just leave it outside the door when I may not feel comfortable doing so.

It's his set, he's not obliged to sell it at all, let alone to somebody who seems pretty entitled to have things done "their way."

(Also to somebody who, only yesterday, was "livid" that they had missed out on another Facebook marketplace sale, and doesn't seem to understand that that's all par for the course of buying things this way.)

I was expecting such a response. He has had the ad up more than a week. Seems to me he would want the money.

It's literally no hassle for him, ailing wife or not. He hasn't stated he's "uncomfortable" with ANY of my "solutions" to his made-up problems. $50 is $50, my money is ready & waiting for him & he has to do the bare minimum.

& where did I write "outside the door"? Obviously he'd put it in a secure place & then tell me where it is. He could do that ONE MINUTE before I showed up. Surely you can see how easy this is for him. I didnt even suggest we meet halfway- God knows how confusing THAT would be for him.

Oh, & this is NOT "par for the course"- I wrote I have done SEVERAL deals this way; in fact that is the norm for me.
  • gelkstergelkster Member Posts: 927

...demand I just leave it outside the door
Can you please show me, ben, where I wrote that I DEMANDED ANYTHING from the seller?

Don't twist my facts to fit your personal narrative, please.
  • benbacardibenbacardi Member Posts: 712
No, you can't determine what is considered hassle for anybody else. You know nothing of their situation.

No, you can't demand what payment method they want to take or what they do with the item. Perhaps they have nowhere outside they would consider safe.

All you're doing here is coming across as arrogant, angry, and entitled.

You don't know what is going on over that period of time. Some people put up an advert at a low price to get interest. If they get 15 people asking for it then they might start talking to some of those people, telling them that someone else has offered more and so unless they increase their offer they will miss out. The advert gets left up for a while while negotiations happen. If you see a popular item worth $100 offered for $10 then you know you won't be the only person asking about it. While some people will be expecting to get it for $10 only, others will be offering more.

Too rich for my blood, but heads up to Minnesota members- saw a FB Marketplace ad that includes a #6277 & 6991 among other sets.  Seller asking $400 & will separate:

"I have 4 large boxes of original Legos from the 80’s and 90’s. Most of the sets are complete. They range from space LEGO’s, knights and castles, ships. Off road vehicles. All of the original LEGO’s are here. I am happy to split them up or sell the entire package. 400 or best offer."

I've been piecing together #10225 R2-D2 from my spare parts lately as I'd really like to add it to my collection. I've just about made it through all of my bins and am right at 75% complete. I've also resigned to buy the brown hoses in LBG as I can't swallow spending $80 + shipping on just that one part.

I signed into OfferUp yesterday evening (as I do multiple times throughout the day) to see that someone had posted a complete #10225 for $50 only 14 minutes previous to me signing in. BUT, as fate would have it, it had already sold.

Not only would I have saved money and been able to put all my parts back, but I would have had those dang brown hoses too. Darn you fate! DARN YOU!!!

I thought I caught a bargain of 6073 Black Falcons fortress for £40 on local Facebook listing. Few missing parts but the important stuff was there (unbroken flag, yellow wall piece). It was just before I was off to visit family so asked for it instead to be shipped there (possibly my first mistake as it meant a postal journey of a over a hundred miles instead of 20 or so).

It never turned up, it's now been two weeks and after much correspondence and apologies on both sides I've now been refunded my £40.

How often do parcels just disappear in the post? Or did he sell it to someone else for a higher price? Genuinely baffled (and a bit disappointed).
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
Very unlikely, especially since any Royal Mail parcels get QR coded for delivery now.
    andheFizyx
  • BobflipBobflip Member Posts: 723
Parcels disappearing is unlikely but it can still happen, the post went particularly bad during lockdown as well as there were so many people buying things online, for me some things took weeks instead of days, as well as a couple of lost items. Also if the seller was just angling to refund he may not have corresponded as much as he did, would more likely want to get the falsehood dealt with and out the way as unsuspiciously quick as possible. All theoretical of course.
    andhe
  • andheandhe Member Posts: 3,940
I'm leaning towards it being genuinely lost (which is a heart-breaking thought for vintage lego) as he seemed legit and I did get a refund. Still holding out hope it will be found in the back of a depot and arrive eventually... 🤞
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
Asking for the tracking number is often a good way to tell.
  • BobflipBobflip Member Posts: 723
It can be a good way to tell, provided they sent it with a service that includes one. He should have gone for at least Signed For though, for an item costing over £20. That doesn't include tracking though, just delivery confirmation.

I fairly regularly get buyers from abroad asking me for a tracking number, and I have to tell them that it's only with the postage method marked as 'tracked' that they opted not to use, hahah. Not quite that sarcastically, but yeah...
    560Heliport
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
If it was Royal Mail or any basic courier there will be  a tracking / confirmation number. That's more than a large letter.

I had ordered 10268 Vestas Wind Turbine (finally) before it was discontinued and was going to get 40413 Mindstorms Mini Robots with it...but the Vestas Wind Turbine was backordered and I just got an e-mail today that the Mini Robots part of the order was cancelled because it's Sold Out.

BOOO!  It was ordered on October 20th when it was in stock.  Lego should have made sure it would be reserved for the order.  Letting one thing go out of stock while the other is delayed is incredibly disappointing.

You can probably demand at least an equivalent in VIP points as compensation.
  • FizyxFizyx Member Posts: 1,358
I never depend on a back-order item to get a GWP that I really want.  Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.  Technically the T&Cs call out that back-orders are not eligible for GWP, but usually you can at least talk CS to giving you VIP points at least like Bumblepants suggests.  But if you really really want the GWP, make sure you are getting at least 1 set that is NOT back-ordered when you get it.  You can use back-orders to push you over the top for what the limit is, but if you have at least one non-back-ordered set, then they will send out the GWP with that set when they send it out.

This isn't to say that I haven't gotten a GWP with a back-ordered set order.  I absolutely have, but it's definitely a crap shoot between if they will run out of the GWP or not in the interim between ordering and shipping, and strictly based on the T&Cs there's not a lot you can do about it.
