Looking to get into the modular scene.

Which currently available set on Lego [email protected] should I start with?

I would go for the Detective's Office. Like the Pet Shop, it's almost like you are getting two buildings for the price of one. The Parisian Restaurant seems too small, and not very much like actual restaurants I saw in Paris recently, and the Palace Cinema just doesn't seem like it "fits" in with all the rest.

I'm sure you are going to get different opinions on this as it really depends on personal taste, but I would vote for the Parisian Restaurant. It is an incredibly fun built, a beautiful set, and looks gorgeous on display. I own several of the modular and it is my favorite by far.

Theoretically, Palace Cinema will retire first, but there is no guarantee. I personally liked the Cinema build. It's really neat overall, but not as beautiful as Parisian Restaurant.

If you want to get all eventually, go for the Cinema.
If you don't plan on getting all of them and just want the "best" one, then it is more relative, but I'd recommend Parisian Restaurant out of those three.

    The Detective's Office.
I'm a huge fan of Noir and I love the design of the building (the pool hall is an awesome touch).

Get the Palace Cinema since it's the oldest & work your way forward from there or you'll likely end up paying more for it down the line.Once you start on the modulars you'll be hooked & will want as many as you can afford. It's the last of the "larger" modulars/larger than the PR or DO & is also 1 of only 2 modulars that came with a vehicle. Plus it's a corner building

Unless of course you directly and specifically ask for the opinion / guidance of said someone(s) =)

If you thought you wanted more modulars I agree with the voices saying PC. It is more likely to retire first. If you aren't worried about having multiple modulars, the DA looks like a lot of fun. Since it sounds like you plan on getting more, PC is the easiest choice in my mind.

What about the Pet Shop? Surely getting that is the top priority if you want to get on the Modular scene. It's a lovely build as well

If l were to only buy one of those it'd be the DO... but if l were getting into modulars (which l just started about 3-4 months ago) l'd start with the oldest one still available (Pet Shop or the Cinema) so l'd make sure to grab them before retiring. But the DO is definitely the best looking out of them.

PC brought me out of my dark ages last year.

As recommended by others i would start with the oldest still available. Soon you'll want them all and you won't be happy if you miss one.

Once I bought my first one I had to have them all.  Unfortunately I had discovered them late in the day and the early ones were just too expensive by then.  So I would get the one that was most likely to 'retire' the soonest.  You'll then have time to save up for the rest!

I'd be tempted to go for Pet Shop as well. It meets the popular criteria in the thread for retiring first (we presume; hands up who missed Town Hall...), but it is also a great build that produces two buildings that display equal well separately or apart.

Unless there's some reason why you're not considering it?

My assumption was that he already had PS. If not then yes, go for that one :)

Nope. Nothing modular at the moment.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR POSTS.

I've got about $150 in Lego rewards and will probably go with the Palace Cinema

i was hoping to win the Emporium or PS at bricks by the bay but alas...

The only modular I don't own at the moment is the Detective Office (waiting for the next double points). If I didn't have any I would still get the DO so I could build a 1920s Chicago street scene.(I like to work dark and more adult with LEGO) So out of the three that would be the one I would get.

My wife & I are looking to start collecting the Modulars, she wants PR first & foremost, while DO is the top of my list. From a retirement stand point, I'd say PC is the one to grab first as its likely to go first, but that's no guarantee.

If you can find the Pet Shop, I'd suggest you start there. It's starting to disappear, and it's a great set!

@Duchessa, we've looked at PS several times, including one at Brick-a-laide, compared to DO, TH, FB & GE, doesn't seem as impressive. If my tax return can stretch that far, we will likely be grabbing all four available on [email protected]

At first I thought the PS did not look impressive, but when you think about how you can split the two buildings apart from one another and move them to different places in your display it makes it a bit more notable (and the only mod so far to do that), plus its colors are pretty nice as well. I think PS is a bit underrated to be honest, but most people (including myself) initially see it and say "$149.99 for that?".

I think the reason he mentioned the modulars above is because Pet Shop is currently out of stock in the U.S.. That's too bad because that's the one I would get first.

Like others have said, if there's any chance you'll want to be semi completist, get the PS if you can.

I don't have any of these sets. If I were to buy from the choices you listed I would pick the Detective's Office. It looks like two buildings. I like the assortment of bricks. You can put more buildings on either side of it. It seems to tell more of a story than the other two.

Well, the Pet Shop is retiring first so if you want to collect them all go for that first. Of course, collecting them all would cost thousands and thousands of dollars. If you just want a cool modular, I would definitely go for the Detective's Office.
