What happened to the Mr Gold Registry on the lego Site? Did anyone Hear anything?

sstoroesstoroe Member Posts: 156
I just noticed this week that they pulled it down.  I had a copy of what it looked like at the end, so I whipped up a map of that last one.  http://minifigpriceguide.com/wordpress/lego-mr-gold-map-of-found-figures-recreated-since-lego-pulled-it-down/
Do any of you think that they should have left this up as a resource for collectors?  I do.

Not really. They are no longer for sale, so its job is done. It was never that accurate since many people weren't registering them so they were worth more when sold on.

It was shut down over a year ago.  I contacted Lego Customer Service, and they did verify that the promotion had run its course.

(She did also indicate that they had just re-vamped the CMF website just before the release of Series 13, and concluding the promotion was part of the internal re-design.)

I still dream of finding a sealed one for rrp in some tiny out-of-the-way toyshop. I've said it before, but I also like the idea that numerous kids have these thrown in with all their other lego and enjoying them for there play value, rather than eBay value (or perhaps that's a bit mean, seeing they could buy a lot more lego if they were to sell that one figure).

^ I did that with the Target Exclusive Blue-Jacket Bilbo.  He was rescued...

Lets not worry about the registry, I found 2 for sale today and one person is asking $1600 the other is asking $3000.  Did these really balloon this much in price?

$1600 seems to be high end, but $3000 is clearly not supported.  Take a look at the sold stats:

If id have to guess, its probably a result of people being desperate to have the "real deal" mr gold instead of paying 30 bucks for a custom.

Its like the CMF series 1. Why are people buying the real deal that cost upwards for 150+ for a full set when you can get a full set for bootlegs for under 20 bucks? I got a set for 12.01 and they look epic.

@ACWWGal2011 -- um, because supporting bootleggers is a terrible thing to do?  You see, I collect LEGO.  I do not collect cheap knock-offs of LEGO.  As a matter of fact, I do not collection any illegal products.  I have no interest in supporting an illegal operation by purchasing their illegal products, and I'm not understanding why you think it's an ok thing to do.

I agree with that.  I only collect real lego figures or customs that are really awesome when a real figure does not exist.  As for the price, they are selling around 1000 - 1250 at a minimum now.  I think that they will sit at about 2000 - 2500 when all is said and done.  Too many people are going to want these to finish their collection.

In all honesty, I do not think that Lego will do another exclusive in the collectible minifigure series.  I think that they though it generated too much bad press for people that could not get one.  If they do, it will just be a rare with way more quantity.  Possibly 40-50K of them produced.

    Bad press?

I don't think Lego suffered from an exclusive figure being difficult to find.
  • sstoroesstoroe Member Posts: 156
I originally thought the same thing, but if they liked the press, why not do one with every series.  Why did they stop after doing this with series 10?

It does lose it's luster if repeated.

I'm not sure what the sales figures were for Series 8 and 9, but if the promotion for 10 reinvigorated sales, then you wouldn't make it an annual event.

I found the two articles that I was basing this on.  As I re-read them, I see that they are opinions.  http://brickset.com/article/6381#comments and http://brickultra.com/lego-mr-gold-scandal-increases/

It is certainly an opinion piece when the author states: "Personally it is another middle finger up to the consumers."

TLG has done a few of these promotions over the years, and I'm sure they weigh consumer frustration.

I don't view that as any different than bloggers bemoaning the cost of Lego, right after they purchase all of the sets...
