Please help with LEGO "Serial Numbers"

Hello fellow LEGO fans!  

I have been a long time LEGO lover and after many years, I decided to get all my LEGO sorted out and properly arranged by Set. At the moment it is all mixed up (boxes, instructions, pieces etc.)

 Now I have found an inside tray box of one of the set pieces but I am unable to identify as to which set it belongs to. All it has embossed on it is the serial number 194732. 

Now I have noticed that all LEGO sets (I think) have a "Serial Number" printed in small fonts somewhere on the box or instructions. This is NOT the set number, which is quite big and bold. For example:

In the Set numbered 6381, the serial number written at the bottom of the instructions in small fonts is 120567.

Similarly in the set numbered 1462, the serial number on the instruction booklet is 120453.

Now I searched the web but I can't find a database in which each of the LEGO sets' serial numbers are listed. In fact there is no mention of them anywhere. I would really be grateful if someone can help me identify which set does the box that I mentioned (Serial number 194732) belong to. I've tried searching a lot but found nothing.

What colour is the tray? Could you upload a picture of it?

It might belong to a set or it could be a gear item (things like key chains, foam swords, some sorting tray products, mugs, etc).

Absolutely everything has a part number - a brick in a particular colour has one; if it's printed, it gets another; if it's put in a bag on its own, another; a bag with other bricks, another; if that bag is put, with more bricks, in a further bag, another.

The number in the back of the instructions is the number for the instructions, not the set. A set with multiple instruction books would have different numbers on each of them.

There used to be a database of all the IDs on the Internet, but it's no longer available. It's also unlikely to have helped much. Something like a tray may or may not have been in there but, even if it was, the number relates to the tray and may have been in several sets, and it wouldn't have told you which those were. And if that wasn't all complicated enough, if the number is moulded into the item, then it's likely to be the same, whatever the colour (there'll be a different number that distinguishes between colours).

First thing that comes to mind is Technic, but I'm no expert on that field.

Have you been able to sort out the rest of your sets? If you can show a list of set numbers, it might narrow down the options.

Ha!  I recognized it immediately. That's the inner tray for a #6921, I checked it. Keep in mind though, it could have been used in other sets as well. Kind of nice to know that someone else is as anal about this stuff as I am.

Thank you very much, oldtodd33! Only problem is that I never owned set 6921  :) So I guess it must have been reused in some other set.

The first thing that came to my mind was also TECHNIC. I guess great minds do think alike, eh?  :D

Here's another thought, since the tray could have come in several different sets just find a box the tray does fit into and call it good.

I finally found which set the box tray belongs to!!! It is set # 5540 Model Team - Formula Racer.
