Pretty good looking, for Ninjago.
@klatu003 would you be able to tell me what set the building on the left is?
Looks like I missed the boat on that one. Not too disappointed though, I think Lego will pump out some more beautiful Japanese structures, or I hope at least.
If anyone is interested in the Battle for Ninjago #70728, TRU and Target have it on sale!!
That gives me time to plan out 2016 purchases of the Airjitsu temple and the Ferris Wheel. Maybe I can convince somebody here that the Ferris wheel would be a nice Christmas present for me. ;-)
You are not the only one. :-) My son has the left set, although it is disassembled and put away. I just bought middle one recently. Like you, I do not have the Airjitsu temple yet. I am thinking next year, and the. Will out it all together. :-)
Now that Ninjago is an evergreen, we can hope that we will get a large building every year or two to expand our FFAW (faux feudal asian world.)
As someone rather astutely pointed out (not me btw) the set doesn't have any villains and this could be because they don't want the set to age too quickly when on the shelf next the currant line of new baddies so I would say they want it to last a few years. I guess the film might be the next opportunity for another D2C but I hope if we do get another one that they stick to this more serene setting.
Question for you or others who are going for a general Asian theme: what are you planning to use for minifigs? Lego has sadly not released many "every day citizens" in any Asian-themed line. So far, I plan to use the ninja which come with the temple of Airjitsu, as they look like "real ninja." Then for the common folk, I ordered about 10 of Sensei wu's golden rice hats pretty cheap. To avoid spending a fortune, I plan to stick them on some basic minifigs I have. It's either that, or have a city of all ninja!
^ Kimono-Girl from the CMF line is great, nice printed hair and a little bit of back printing too. Other than that wolverine he seems like an everyday kind of guy to me.
currently amassing lots of sets and bricks!
theme wise: gangstas, death, ninja scroll (anime), orient expidition
minifigure wise i have some custom ones to go with my "still wip" diorama:
black ninjas, fine dressed gentleman, drunk sorceresses, bad mages, crazy chain-weapon wielding schoolgirls and (now) 40 skeletons...
so hyped
However, having seen The Temple of Airjitsu, I just had to have it!
I also picked up Master Wu's Dragon, the Titanium Dragon and Enter the Serpent, because, well, who doesn't like dragons? And I do like a nice jungle-style temple-thing.
So far, I have only built the two small buildings (blacksmith and smuggler's market) and they both look fantastic. I can't wait to get going on the Temple itself and am especially looking forward to the shadow theatre build. It seems like a really nice little unique touch.
I just got an email from Lego offering 500 bonus points on Temple of Airjitzu, in addition to the 200 earned from buying it. I have no interest in Ninjago characters or episodes, but this is a beautiful set. Tempted - should I pull the trigger?
Wow, 500 extra points, so that's $35 in points for the set. I also had zero interest in Ninjago before this temple was shown. But I love castle/modular/any well made full building structures, so this was a must have for me. I love it so much that I now actually pay attention to the Ninjago line, though 90% of them hold no interest to me still.
A few people have asked elsewhere what other sets go well with Temple of Airjitzu. #70734 Master Wu Dragon is definitely a good one I'd recommend to any AFOL, although it has no obvious place to perch on or around the temple and gives you both a duplicate Cole and another version of Sensei Wu. There's no really practical way to avoid duplicates or alternate versions of the characters in Temple of Airjitzu since it contains all the Ninjago theme's central characters (#70746 is literally the only Ninjago set other than spinners, boosters, and polybags without any version of the six ninja or their sensei).
Also, despite a lot of disappointment from people who were hoping for a specific counterpart to Temple of Airjitzu rather than a playset, #70590 Airjitzu Battle Grounds could go nicely with the Temple of Airjitzu nicely. It has matching colors, a similar variety of historic-looking Asian architecture, and even similar statues. The Airjitzu launchers on the sides can be easily removed for display purposes, and the ones in the center are both removable and largely unobtrusive since they mostly just look like decorative columns. Even most of the weapons in the set are fairly subdued compared to the flashy look of a lot of Ninjago weapons. And the set includes the Ghost of Sensei Yang, who haunts the Temple of Airjitzu in the story and whose likeness appeared as a statue in the set.
Airjitzu Battle Grounds is not out yet in the United States, but if you get it and do in fact end up liking the Airjitzu figures or flier gimmick, chances are it's only a matter of time before leftover Airjitzu fliers hit clearance shelves, if they haven't already! Thanks to Airjitzu Battle Grounds, all six ninja are available in powered-up Airjitzu forms, and while these might not have any use for a more traditional oriental layout I think they look really cool.
The big issue with any set you buy to complement Temple of Airjitzu is just figuring out where to put it. The Temple of Airjitzu is, for the most part, already a complete scene. The empty space behind the buildings can't easily be used without altering the buildings' open-back design, putting things in front of the buildings in the center obstructs the view of them, and placing things in front of the buildings to either side makes the already-large display take up even more space. So unless you have a very substantial amount of free display space, Temple of Airjitzu works best as a stand-alone item. That said, I have seen some people go really wild, creating a whole Ninjago layout using all the biggest and most impressive temples and other buildings the theme has to offer!
P.S. I used some of the VIP points for another Ninjago set, which surprised me! #70747, Boulder Blaster, plus a Dimensions pack to add to the Christmas pile for the Boy. :D Also wouldn't mind adding more flying pirates themed Ninjago sets sometime.
Here's a video of it in action:
