There have been many discussions on this topic in the past. If you do a seach "favorite Lego set" you will find a similar discussion.

Kinda clutters the forum. Redundancy is unecessary and it also detracts from the newer posts. Not trying to attack your post, just saying.

Any chance it can be combined into the previous favorite set thread?
  • oldtodd33oldtodd33 Member Posts: 2,694
I do agree with all of you about starting this topic again but, if you do a search for this topic you have to go through 5 or 6 pages until you come up with something related to your favorite set topic. Most of the search results come up with the predictions thread. The search capabilities of this forum for just this purpose are sadly lacking because it searches all comments and not just thread titles. @Huw

Google often offers a far greater search capabilities than those built into the forums; just use:

    search term site:bricksetforum.com

    For example: https://www.google.co.uk/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=your+favourite+lego+site:bricksetforum.com

I do get a little frustrated by the 'weve already talked about this' comments.  There are lots of new members that won't read back through old threads, and to be honest, why should they.

If you're not interested in a thread don't read it, and if the majority of people aren't interested in it, the thread will drop down out of sight fairly quickly, as is the nature of a message board.

And out of interest, my favourite set is #21109 Exo-suit.  The one that I really really want is #10214 Tower Bridge.

There is a fine line between pointing the OP in the right direction and being rude about it. Although, if 20 new members signed up during the week, are you ok with each one posting the same question?
  • SuperTrampSuperTramp Member Posts: 1,021
    ^Does that happen though?

I cant even find the other thread and Im familiar with the site.

There are lots of new members that won't read back through old threads, and to be honest, why should they.
Because they are joining already established community. Its only polite to make some effort to learn about the community, to try and respect and acknowledge it - which does include searching the forum for already existing threads and joining in with your contributions.

In my view this is wholly different to barging in, ignoring existing discussions and slapping your thread up for everyone to see, "just because I can".

Not saying that this was the OP's intention - just answering the question "why".
  • WatfordScottyMWatfordScottyM Member Posts: 501
I agree on becoming familiar with the community, but I think it can be a bit dismissive of new members to instantly respond with 'weve already discussed that somewhere else'.  Just keeping the same old thread for a topic can be a bit overwhelming.

For instance, I don't even bother with the discussion on the price of discontinued sets as there are 26k comments, alot of which are discussions between individuals and little in jokes.  A new post on a topic every now and then can keep things fresh.

Not to mention if the new member had originally found the other thread about this topic, and posted in it, would people instead be complaining about gravedigging an old topic?

^ Had no idea gravedigging (giggle!) can be a cause for complaint - what's there to complain about?

Ok I'm a bit OCD, but isn't it nice to have information/opinions/discussion on one particular topic in a single thread? So much easier to navigate and find information.

(Though for multiple page threads there is one functionality that appears to be missing on brickset - either to display thread in print mode in full (so that you can use Ctrl-F), or "search within the thread" button...)

I'd normally be on the same OCD page @monkey, but as with the discountinued sets thread, there are hundreds of pages, alot of which doesn't actually contribute to the discussion at all.  It's very difficult to trawl back through that much content to find anything meaningful.
  • VorpalRyuVorpalRyu Member Posts: 2,318
Gravedigging, now there's a term I had never heard of in all the years I was involved in forums here & there until I joined the Halo Waypoint forums. The mods there are exceedingly nasty about it, if a thread sees no posts for a few months, don't post, they can & will ban you for that....sorry, not ban, suspend your account until the Clans will be returning to the Inner Sphere! (For those not familiar with BattleTech/MechWarrior, the 36th century). Harsh, to say the least.

Maybe gravedigging is more of a taboo on gaming forums, as that's where I've also had issues with it. If you posted in an older topic, other forum members would be all over you because the topic was too old. So am I correct to assume there is less stigma associated with gravedigging here at Brickset?

Couldn't possible popular topics like this be set up to appear near the top of that particular forum, as to prevent duplicates?

I shall contribute my list here though:

Own: #10227 B-Wing Starfighter (I know it's not a highly loved set but I really did enjoy building it and love the look of it, now if we could just get a UCS A-Wing) or #10217 Diagon Alley (which was such an enjoyable build)
Want: #10179 UCS Millennium Falcon (Probably will never happen, but I intend to try to get one at some point in my life.)
  • VorpalRyuVorpalRyu Member Posts: 2,318
@matticus_bricks, I have been on a small number of gaming forums over the years, none before that had issue with 'gravedigging' or 'necroposting' as its also termed. Seems that 343 (the guys that took over from Bungie on Halo), wanted to rid the HWP forums of those who didn't like their baby (Halo4), so fans of earlier games were targeted, I was one of several suspended over necroposting, while fanboys for 343 could revive posts even over a year old & what happened? Nothing...

I like the term Grave digging for reviving an old thread. Most forums actually do seem to prefer that you make a new thread rather than revive an old one, in fact Brickset is probably the only one I've ever found that prefers the revival of long dead threads to starting new ones...I suspect that a lot of forums prefer new threads for SEO type reasons (even if most search engines don't put much value in forum pages)

In response to the original question, I don't think I could pick one single set for either...there are far too many!

We need to have a section called "Ground Hog Day' where we can put all these reoccurring threads topics.

@Shib, curious to know what forums you've been on & how far back your interaction with them goes. Seems your experiences of forums are a strong counterpoint to mine. The first forums I joined were around 2000-01, mostly sci-fi & gaming, plus a few webpage/programming forums.

As of late it's mainly Lego forums. Prior to that it was generally console specific computer gaming ones.

it's often an issue with over moderated forums, the mods feel the need to respond to any thread revival by moaning at whoever revived it, tbh those forums should just script an auto close for threads

I am totally in LOVE with my elves sets at the moment. The hidden compartments etc have me chomping at the bit to get the next one.
@Shib @vorpalRyu The one thing I have noticed here is that the one big no no on most other forums, going off topic isn't a strict no no! And that is what I love about being here. The interesting side notes that happen and then the topic continues on anyway. <3

Sci-fi forums are the worst for off-topic & the mods cracking up about it. I can't remember the name of it, but someone from Spooky's put me & a friend on to it, this one forum was so bad for it, if someone posted a thread on battle capabilities of SW vs ST, you couldn't mention BSG or Babylon 5 without threats of a 30 minute temp-ban.

@xiahna - I got told off on eurobricks once for going off topic by making a comment about Marvel films on the Upcoming Marvel sets thread...I get why some forums feel the need to really moderate stuff but if it stops a natural conversation flow then what's the point?
    VorpalRyuTheBigLegoski
  • matticus_bricksmatticus_bricks Member Posts: 651
^Agreed, I think natural conversation flow is what makes talking to other people so great. Have you ever had a discussion IRL with a Leslie Knope type of person that keeps everyone on the same subject? Imagine someone cutting you off and saying "You're going off topic, if you don't continue talking about cute dog breeds, you're out of this conversation!"

In response to everyones comments, I am new here and have little to no idea of how to check the existing threads. I just wanted to create a new discussion, but everyone I start has been existing and thus shut down. So by all means if this thread is "repeated" I am fine with someone closing it for me...

As I stated above, if everyone is really going to get that upset over a topic like this popping up again, please just sticky them to the top of their appropriate forum. I've seen plenty of other forums do that for topics like this. People can read and post in that topic they're interested in reading, and nobody gets upset over a new topic popping up.

Also, it pretty much is a lose-lose. Some people will complain because you brought up an old topic, others will complain because you started a new one.

If you want my personal opinion, I kind of feel like all I've learned from this topic is to not post a topic unless you spend 5 days making sure this wasn't a topic within the last 5 years. Even then, you might want to make sure it isn't 6 years old just to be safe.

The Coast Guard "Sea King".    I wanted the set when it was new, but there's no way I could afford it now.

The 4431 ambulance and the Technic Rescue Helicopter are some of the favorite sets of recent years.  An iconic set of my early childhood would be the Shell promo police Jeep, one of the first Lego sets I owned.
