Wanted: LEGO Builders to represent Brickset at a LEGO User Group gathering!

edited July 2015 in Community and Events
Fellow Bricksetters,

LEGO's Community Events and Engagement team have sent every LEGO User Group (LUG) multiple copies of Set 40107 Winter Skating Scene with a view to those sets being used in a building event. The challenge is to create something with the elements from all the sets combined and share photographs of the build.

Kev the Hairy Fairy has proposed that all recognised UK LUGs participate in a communal "build-off" event at a central location, with each LUG providing a team of 4 builders. He's at pains to point out that it won't be a competition but instead a social gathering of the LUGs designed to bring the community together and have fun!

Brickset has accepted the invitation to participate, as have a number of other LUGs including The Brickish Association, Fairy Bricks and Bricks Magazine. We're therefore in need of 4 enthusiastic Brickset members who would like to represent Brickset at the build-off. Building prowess isn't a requirement, although obviously wouldn't hurt....

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday 26th July at a venue in Yaxley near Peterborough in the UK. There is a carvery on site where lunch will be available for £10/head if you want it: http://www.thefarmersyaxley.co.uk/index.htm

Each team will get 40 copies of Set 40107 and will need to try and build something awesome with the parts.... I'm not aware of any rule preventing the chosen 4 from communicating prior to the event and coming up with a plan, although I'm sure that @SirKevbags will let us know if this is verboten! Kev's keen to display the completed models at the Bricktastic show in August.

If you can get to Yaxley on the 26th July and you'd be interested in being part of the Brickset team, or even if you'd just like to come along and hang out, then please post in this thread, specifying whether you'd like to be a builder or a socialiser. Kev's asked us to let him know final numbers (and whether you'll be wanting lunch) by 12th July. If more than 4 people volunteer for the team then we'll probably pick 4 names out of a hat or something.

Forza Brickset! (oops - sorry, this isn't a competition, right, @SirKevbags....?)

Grrr, only a couple of miles from my house..... but its the day after I go on holiday to the south of Cornwall!  I don't think the Mrs or the kids will let me go a day and a half late especially as I'm driving, but I hope that those that can attend have a great day and lots of fun.

It most certainly isn't a competition but put enough men in a room together and ego is likely to take over ;-)

So don't be shy people, put your names forward as either builders or just to come for the crack. Events without the public are few and far between and provide a much better opportunity to socialise.

I hope there will also be a team from London AFOLs. I've put the word out. We will beat the northern **** into the ground.  I mean, er, engage in brotherly/sisterly love with our fellow LEGO enthusiasts from other LUGs

Obviously there will be a Fairy team. Despite the fact that this isn't a competition, the behind the scenes smack talk is on the rise!

I've heard (as yet unconfirmed) reports that some Ambassadors are offering incentives to represent their team and the use of performance enhancing substances is being considered! ;-)

Is there really nobody who fancies this? Hard to believe given our huge UK contingent. Overseas members are of course also welcome, incidentally!

Yes come on Bricksetters it should be a fun day out and there might even be a surprise* or two on the day.........

Surprises are subject to availability ;-)

Would love to come but don't think I will for a couple of reasons.  Its quite far for me to travel and my building abilities are very low.  That coupled with my natural shyness means this badger won't be turning up but this sounds like a great day out though and I am surpised that we cannot get a team together for this.

If however you are short by one person and nobody else wants to do it.  I would make the effort and help by arranging bricks in colour etc. I was always happy to be the last picked when choosing sides as a kid.

Please don't worry about your building skills - this is all about the crack, not about building excellence. As for shyness, respect for even posting this but you should have no fear on that score - the likes of Kev will be sure to make you feel welcome!

No pressure, but if you do feel inclined to give it a go then I'm sure you'll be pleased you did.

Am I the only one thinking Lego, meat and gravy?
  • SirKevbagsSirKevbags Fairy Land Member Posts: 4,030
As Doc says this isn't about building prowess, it's about having a fun day out. As much as I love events with the public they are very difficult to socialise at, especially being involved with Fairy Bricks things which tend to be non stop.

A carvery should seal the deal for anyone!

I'm certainly no "master builder" and like bendybadger I'm a little shy but if I'm needed then count me in :)

It doesn't look like I will be able to make the whole day atm. If I can get out of another arrangement I will but at the moment its looking unlikely.

I'm assuming that the venue for the event as well as the carvery is http://www.thefarmersyaxley.co.uk/index.htm although I'm sure @SirKevbags will set us straight if it isn't....

TheBrickLadd can't make it we're looking for a 4th team member. Surely there must be one more intrepid Bricksetter who's up for this?
  • DarthMorlDarthMorl Member Posts: 335
Yes come on bricksetter's @Legoboy had offered each team member 1000 parts to put in their "lunch boxes" from his MF......

Indeed it is everything under one roof. Meet, build, lunch and then build a bit more.

The set boxes are allowed to be opened and discarded but not the bags. No pre sorting allowed ;-)

You're only a short Eurostar trip away from the UK, and I hear that Peterborough is nice in August July....

Peterborough is nice all the time!
    (born and bred there)
But you should be saying July in particular, Dave!

Sadly I'm busy that weekend and can't go to combine this with a trip to see my mum but I hope you'll all enjoy the delights of the 'Borough.

I've also eaten at the venue and it was very nice, as I recall.

I De boxed 40 of these today to make transport easier and it felt rather good just ripping them open and not caring about keeping the boxes nice!

I'm still working out whether I can come to the event.

  • bendybadgerbendybadger 127.0.0.1 ::1Member Posts: 1,141
@Venunder - Your team needs you.  We also need another member to come forward and help us out. @theLEGOman fancy joining the team?  With @SirKevbags , me and you we could form a Northern contingent.  Can give you a lift down and back if you like as well.

@drdavewatford We acually spend a lot of time in the UK, just recently in Lancaster for an inteview for my Hubbie. However, he did not get the job :(

Regretably I am not the healthiest pea in the pod, or I'd come down on my own for the event and to meet some people. Would be nice to put faces to the names. I hope you find another team member soon!

@snowhitie huh?? You had to interview for your hubbie? Thats very strict :) I didn't even see the post advertised.

Would have been nice to get more Brickset members there too as I am looking forward to seeing people instead of forum names.

Fantastic - looks like @rossdaughtrey completes the team!

Supporters and other assorted spectators are most welcome - @sirkevbags please note the additional attendees for lunch etc.
