Search not working

CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
I cannot search for anything, I get a "union" error.

It does allow this sort of joke though ...

Links in people's comments also do not work for me. For example, if someone puts a pound sign in front of a set number it should pull up the set when it is clicked. Mine just gives the same error as it does when a search is performed. Basically, links inside of Brickset are not working at all for me. Now external links work fine (youtube videos, etc.).

I'm wondering if Brickset's search engine is ever going to be fixed or there's ever going to be a response to this issue? It's a royal pain to have to go outside BS to perform searches using Google just to find stuff inside Brickset. Is this the long-term plan for Brickset?

I'm guessing it won't be looked at until Huw gets back from holiday

Apologies for the inconvenience all. I'll make sure that this gets escalated to Vanilla who host our forum.

^Thanks @Matthew! The search engine actually keeps me from creating new threads and asking redundant questions.

To make the issue more concise, 1) the search engine doesn't work at all for me, and 2) clicking a set number link within a comment (that starts with a pound sign) doesn't bring up the set in question...it brings up places where the set was mentioned in other comments.

    Thanks again!!!!

If you create the hyperlink without including the # sign it will link back to the brickset.com item desceiption. Not sure if that helps or not.
  • eggsheneggshen Member Posts: 596
Hmmmm. Let me clarify because my last post did not make sense. If you try to create a hyperlink back to brickset and include the # sign, you get the same error as the search issue. So I believe the problem is how the # sign is handled by the vanillaforums code.

The hash # set number works fnie for me on a PC, but I don't think it has ever worked on a mobile.

Yes, I think that is the desktop vs mobile problem.

HI, on the forum the search function does not seem to work for me. I noticed someone mentioning it the other day as well (don't remember in what thread).Whatever I type in the search box I get the message: Illegal mix of collations for operation 'UNION'
I even tried some terms I remember searching for before and they worked then, not now. I use Firefox on Windows.

Also, another issue (minor) is that when I type on my phone (also using firefox, on a sony xperia) I can't seem to get any paragraphs. I type a message like with lines in between and it appears on the forum as a whole block of text. Even if I try to edit it, I can't get it to work. It's happened a couple of times - any ideas?

    Thanks!

No joy yet on the search issue unfortunately, hopefully it will be fixed soon. With regard to the formatting issue when posting from mobile reported by @snowhitie and others, I've rolled back to the previous version of the editor which should be more reliable. Let me know if the issue is not resolved.

Looks like we also lost the ability to create new paragraphs. @Huw is allowed to take vacations? Fiddlesticks!

@SumoLego For a new paragraph, type the letters br inside pointy < > bracket things, with no spaces:

    ...like so

@Matthew thanks for this update. I'll try if the paragraphs work now. Is this a new paragraph yet? And now?
for this one I am trying legomatts programming suggestion

edit: seems like it does not work yet, but you can get round it with @legomatt idea (cheers mate) although if you want a white line in between you have to write < br > twice

A workaround for searching is to use google. Google the phrase you want plus "site:bricksetforum.com" at the end.

Even easier, type the letter p inside pointy brackets. br is for line breaks, p is for paragraph breaks.

But yeah, I'd really like the rich text editor to be fixed. I can tolerate plaintext editors (sometimes they're even easier for me than the rich text editor since I can just type my bold, italic, link, and image tags instead of having to move my cursor to the buttons at the top of the screen), but when the basic editor can't even handle line breaks and paragraph breaks using the enter/return key, that's a problem.

And as everyone knows, we all like a saving. That's 62.5% off! ;oP

The search function has been working fine for me, however, I did find something inconvenient about it recently. When I search the word "elves" I find mostly posts about "shelves" or "themselves" or... anything else containing the word elves. If I put elves in quotation marks (like I would do on Google to get things specifically related to the word elves), I only get results that actually have the word elves in quotation marks. I think it would be great if the search function were altered to handle quotation marks like Google does, i.e., using them to single out an exact phrase.
