This set fails at being innovative. Fails at impressing. This is compounded by failing to be anywhere close to a reasonable price. Now where is that "what could push you into a dark age?" Thread?
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,833
This could be the first UCS minifigure set to really tank. It may also be the first set in a while to break the no exclusive discount rule in the US, as I cannot see people paying 249.99 for this one, especially when Wampa Cave sets can be had for about 60 USD in the aftermarket.
Fairly certain you could go buy three sets in the aftermarket that would darn near match what this set is and it would still be about 30-50 USD cheaper and you would have two tauntauns:
    #75014
    #8089
    #7749

It includes parts of 7879 and 7666 so TLG may be looking at the prices all these sets currently sell for and justify the $249 in their minds.

On the other side of the coin, add up the piece count from those 5 sets it comes out to 2199 pieces.AOH is 2144 pieces and it would cost alot more to buy all five rather than this.So I guess this could be considered the Hoth Winter Village for those that already have all the Hoth sets.

I heard they may do a press release for this set today, due to the leaks. Huw can you confirm this?

press release is today at nytf

what is the start time GMT for the New York Toy fair?
hell the start time in EST will do as i can work it out from that.
  • CapnRex101CapnRex101 Administrator Posts: 2,364
@Adzbadboy - It will be revealed at 12:30pm GMT today. The reveal has nothing to do with leaks, it was planned for today at the New York Toy Fair just as the TIE Fighter was revealed last year. Unfortunately some websites ignored the clear embargo on this information and the images are therefore doing the rounds already.

@chrisalddin - Expect images to start arriving in the next hour or so.

Really disappointed. I own most of the previous Hoth sets and this has nothing to offer me except a couple new minifigures.

Would have liked to see a snow-speckled Chewie, some actual corridor and rooms, and about 400 more elements worth of build. Could have made the Ion cannon bigger and fleshed out some of the interior. As is it just feels like an overpriced value pack.

How could they not put the Bacta Tank in this - and leia, and more stormtroopers. It's madness. I'm rarely critical of Lego (I really like the look of the Classic Batcave) but this is just such a disappointment, so hyped up for nothing. But ill end up getting it for the figures most likely, so Lego have beat me haha.

I actually quite like it.  As soon as I saw the images I was thinking about how I could combine it with the other Hoth sets (and a AT-ATs) I have to make one larger base/battle scene.

It's obvious, LEGO's favorite Star Wars movie is Episode 5...and I totally agree. However, please let's move on all the Hoth stuff.
  • chrisalddinchrisalddin Member Posts: 3,041
    seeing more image's of this,
here is my view on this set.
this set is a add-on set for people who have other Hoth set's.
this set also looks to have the same type of theme as the D2C batman set we get this month. that is half buildings and lot's of gaps.
as i just read on a review on the batman set over on rebrickable. all you need to add in is a film crew. and it would pass as a film set.
with it price point only £10 less then the bat cave for around 400 lass parts.
you have to ask. TLG what are you playing at.
  • SumoLegoSumoLego Member Posts: 15,234
This feels like a leftover parts jamboree.  What exactly does the Wampa scene have to do with the assault on Hoth, and why is there a familiar speeder bike?

They ought to throw in some Galaxy Quest pieces and maybe an Avengers Hulk to round out the potpourri.  And a Batman and Spiderman.

Disappointing set.  Smacks of a creative brain-drain that gave us the WV re-release.  Maybe too much time and energy was spent on the UCS Sandcrawler, Slave-1 and Tie Fighter for there to be much originality for this conglomeration.

you know there is a plus side to this.
that plus is. i don't feel like that i have to buy this.
as there is no way i could buy all the set's TLG release each year.
so the more D2C set's that i dont feel the need to buy the better. :)
i well have more money to spend on Nexo Knights.

@INDYJONAS Looking at the video and some of the features of the set, It's not a must buy but definitely a good way to expand the Hoth Sets that have come in the past.

I also think that with the renewed interest in SW due to the success of TFAs from many that would not have purchased Lego before this is a good way to get good OT movie set that has almost everything.. T bad no AT-AT is included.
  • chrisalddinchrisalddin Member Posts: 3,041
is it just me or is the Designer video, look like it was made by amateurs?
it like they dont know how to relate to the fact there on camera.
it is almost painful to watch.

^ I would rather they be quality Lego builders than quality tv presenters.
trying not to crack up here.
you have seen the set right, it is a rehash of the older Hoth sets, made by others.
the Ion Cannon is a good model that i don't thing i seen before. but i could be wrong.
so lest ask the rest of the forum. is there any part of this Hoth set that is 100% new and not a rework of a older sets that came before..

@chrisalddin Not everyone is comfortable in front of the camera.  It seems to me most of them are speaking in a language other than their mother tongue which also must be an added challenge.  I think it was done well enough personally.
  • MrJ_NYMrJ_NY Member Posts: 592
They also show images of set/box for Hoth Attack 75138,another 233 pieces. Why didn't they just include it in Hoth Assault and jack the price up? Or is so parents can still buy their kids a piece of Hoth when they don't want to spend $249.99 on the Uninspired Colllection of Snow version

@chrisalddin: Both the Ion Cannon and the Shield Generator are new.

I actually really like the set. It's certainly a super pack of rehashes, but I don't have any of the sets which are being rehashed.

You clearly missed the point, these guys are paid to design lego sets, whether you like this one or not is not really relevant (it WILL sell).  They are not paid to present video's, its not their number one skill set.
Besides I think they presented ok, far from the worst.

Actually, I get the feeling that they only like Hoth.....

In 15 years the number of Dagobah & Cloud City sets seems to be rather limited to say the least, especially when you consider the percentage of screen time they both have.

I'm fairly underwhelmed by this set, and the UK RRP is just terrible; I think I'll wait for the inevitable sale - at 20% off it will look slightly more interesting.

But here is the thing, at least for me. For 249.99 USD, I should not have to add anything. I mean this is a 'Ultimate Collectors series' set, it is not a 'Partially complete collectors series', right?

Yeah when I (and I would guess most other people) think of Hoth, I think of AT-ATs. Two snowtroopers couldn't assault a grilled cheese sandwich. If this was just a bloated collection of things like the #60097 City Square I might raise my eyebrows at the price and then move along. But calling this Ultimate anything is just a joke.

Why would you want something 100% new? If that was the case, then this set would have nothing that has appeared in the past 15 years or so. It wouldn't really be a Hoth set if it missed out everything that had gone before.

AFOLS have to remember that UCS are nto just for AFOLs. They are being bought for kids these days too. This is a huge playset of a great film. It will sell.

You know what, it is just a glorified play set, and they call it a UCS to help justify the price figuring most of us will just drink the cool-aid anyway.

I know this will sell, at the moment anything with either Star Wars on it or Lego will sell at the moment (the Tescos near me have the new #75137 Star Wars sets on the shelf for £22 and presumably they are selling as there were only a few left).
I just think that after the designs and build techniques that went into Slave 1, The Sandcrawler, Ewok Village and even the Tie Fighter that something like this is almost lazy as a big budget UCS set.
As I stated in another thread, personally (and I know in the grand scheme of things I'm a nobody) this set would have been better as a complete wave of sets that could have been used to make up your own version of a scene, especially with the release of #75138 being essentially an add on to this set. Also a shame that some of the minifigs will probably be exclusive to this set.

will any one buy this set to bricklink it?
or just buy it to put away for 5 years time.
only to find that over half the set sold also got put away to be resold later.

I see nothing in this set that would not be redone by LEGO in smaller sets once it discontinues, but I'm sure it will not stop some people from overpaying to have it once it is gone.

I would LOVE to be adopted by those that buy this for their children.. 249 USD for something on a table top that can have pieces lost or broken? Something that, when you look at it, it just does not look like it should cost that much? I would hazard the majority that buy these are very much still AFOLs and not being bought for children.

  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,554
$250 is nothing for some families for their kids. It looks like a great set for playing, it covers most bases(!).

Do you mean sell it on bricklink? I would say yes, some people will part it out and sell the parts and minifigs.
