I keep waiting for Lego to trump the Taj Mahal but they still have yet to.
It will happen one day. Just due to the overwhelming number of 1,000+ piece sets that comes out these days. When I was a kid, sets that big were unbelievably rare. Actually, they didn't even exist. Now, there are multiple each year. We'll see the Taj Mahal eclipsed one day.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Taj Mahal re-released, with a few minor mods to justify it. Not sure if there were any weakness's to it, but if there were then there's the opportunity.

Doesn't the Taj Mahal just have more pieces? It isn't as big as the UCS Millennium Falcon. To me, the UCS MF "trumps" the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal just has little pieces that make up the model.

Exactly right.  The Falcon weighs 10.2kg compared to the 6.4kg of the Taj.  Almost twice the set.

I would argue that the Tower Bridge also 'trumps' the Taj Mahal in terms of design.

We can agree to disagree on that.  Given the choices, I would (and currently) display the Sydney Opera House and Tower Bridge before the Taj Mahal.

It's a nice model, but very pedestrian.

I've got a Taj Mahal.  It's a sea of white bricks.  It's not an inspiring build.

Just because it's massive doesn't make it interesting.

(Much like the Death Star II and Super Star Destroyer.)

Agreed on Taj Mahal being boring to me. Only reason I regret not buying one when it was out is secondary market value now.

So, What's going this year, Tower Bridge... Or the opera house albeit out of sync? Any guesses?
  • SumoLegoSumoLego Member Posts: 15,241
The Opera House is a bit of a mystery, as there is a licensing agreement to produce that set.

The Architecture set is retired, so the Creator set could disappear at any moment.  I have a couple, so I'm not worried, but I wouldn't be surprised one bit if they both were retired.

The GBHQ set certainly gIves me pause.

And the Tower Bridge has been around for soooooo long.  I'd welcome a Eiffel Tower reissue.

Nope, even having seen one in the brick I don't really see any appeal beyond the size. In context of the time it came out, I can see the attraction historically, but now there are masses of sets that look far more impressive, even without that massive piece count.
it's another one of those 'iconic sets' that if i somehow came into possession of, I'd sell it to get other stuff that I really want.

See, we're all different.  A sea of white it might be, but for me it is a thing of beauty.  I have a ton of sets, some built, many not, that were far more interesting to build and a load more detail, but as far as a centre piece goes, Taj wins over them all.  Maybe it is the white that does it for me, from a minimalistic perspective.

Saw two of them at Brick-a-laide, I didn't think much of the set before that, seeing it IRL, I could only think, "even at 50% off retail, nope..."
  • VorpalRyuVorpalRyu Member Posts: 2,318
Curious to everyone's thoughts on #60097, some of our local retailers are selling them for AU$200 (RRP is $250), so on a 20% off sale, I'd be looking at $160. Does anyone think this set is likely to fetch numbers worth chasing (2xRRP or better) once it goes EOL? I know it has the Green Futuron minifigure as part of a Lego shop, but I'm kind of on fence about grabbing more than the one we have for part of our christmas presents.

On the subject of the Taj - I've said this before here and it's still true: It's the most beautiful thing in my house and remains the only set that's never dismantled, and not just because of the *ahem* tedious build....

I did not enjoy building the Taj since so much of it was 4x steps and it took so much time. But once in complete form, it really is my most beautiful set. It has a glowing aura about it that is irresistible in the right light. Essentially it has a feel of 'magnificence'. The Eiffel Tower and Tower Bridge doesn't come close for me.

    Exactly.  The best.  ;)

^ Some see a thing of beauty, I see a waste of near on 6,000 bricks, each to their own, but as long as you guys enjoy it, that's the important thing.

This discussion makes me think of the singular most awesome thing about Lego, if you don't like the end product of a set, you can always build something else.

I think it is way overpriced at 199.99 USD. Should likely be more like 130-150 range to be honest, this is one of the sets I often refer to when I say LEGO appears to be over pricing their sets. Not sure how many they have sold at 199.99 USD but I would wager it has not been many.

Im not sure it is special enough to make a lot EOL, especially if it goes on sale (in the US Im not sure what that sale would be as I think it is was a TRU exclusive (though I have seen them at a Meijers in the area).

@madforLEGO, the $160 @VorpalRyu talks about is AUD so about $112 USD. (I'm assuming toi

@VorpalRyu although a good price it's pretty early on in its life cycle plus being an expensive set I believe that it may be hard to get people to pay big money for them.

I think any climb in price will be slow and I could see it taking a number of years after retirement to see even $300AUD which after fees and shipping won't leave you much considering you may have been holding it for 4 plus years.

I suppose though if you do Gumtree (or similar) and alow pick up you save a bunch of cost over eBay and posting (which is what I mostly do).
  • pharmjodpharmjod Member Posts: 2,916
Amazon.co.UK had #60097 on sale for something like $140 shipped to the USA a month or so ago. I passed even at that price.
  • VorpalRyuVorpalRyu Member Posts: 2,318
@Basta, I was thinking that myself, its just that when I grabbed one for us during Big W's last 20% off sale, I was kind of lucky. About five minutes after I grabbed it, a couple showed up & grabbed the remaining three sets there & while on the hunt for the last two Scooby-Doo sets, I came across them at another Big W, again loading up all the #60097.

60097 is nothing compared to that great town square set from the mid-2000s.
  • VorpalRyuVorpalRyu Member Posts: 2,318
^ If you're talking #10184, I doubt we'll see another city set to that level (part of that was because of whole anniversary thing). Looking at the rest of the town center type sets, #60097 does look pretty good, but I was just wondering if I hadn't missed something with the fact that a couple was grabbing them, clearly for reselling...

No, but I do think I prefer Tower Bridge and Sydney Opera House over it.

I cannot get excited about #60097.  The buildings themselves are too small -- and I don't care for many of the vehicles.

#10184 was an amazing set at the time.  The buildings were substantial enough to fit in with the modulars.  I'm just sad that both the movie theater and the town hall were replaced, so those buildings become a little obsolete...though I suppose I can adapt the town hall is a courthouse, and that the theater is a playhouse.

Well, 10184 was a clearly AFOL- and TFOL-oriented set, directed at ages 12 and up. Kind of ironic since the original Town Plan sets that inspired it WERE kid-oriented playsets, but there's a great difference in the level of complexity between those original sets and the anniversary set.

60097, on the other hand, is a regular, kid-oriented, non-exclusive City set aimed at ages 6–12. Overall, I think it's brilliantly detailed — for a City set. The LEGO Store is an excellent likeness while still adhering to the 8x16 standard for LEGO City building, and the service center is amazingly modern-looking. But compare it to any AFOL-oriented exclusive and it's no surprise it comes out behind. Same goes for #60026, #4207, or #8404. They're all elegant sets in their own right, but expecting them to hold up to the modular buildings and other sets of their kind would be setting your standards a bit high.

Nevertheless, I would expect this set to appreciate in value. The novelty of the LEGO brand store and truck can't be denied, the printed LEGO City boxes are a cut above previous LEGO boxes in sets which have been stickered, the Coffee Chain building and employee are great inclusions for fans of The LEGO Movie, and there's even a neo-Futuron figure to cater to nostalgic Spacers. Overall, there's a lot this set has to offer that isn't more readily available from other sets or themes.

@Aanchir, I agree #60097 having the Lego shop with a green Futuron space fig & the Coffee Chain, do make this one a little more special than most your regular City sets, but I was trying to figure out why a couple was trying grab several for reselling. It is a nice set overall (we grabbed one for a family xmas present), but I didn't think the set was strong enough to see it go 2xRRP or better after EOL, clearly that couple think differently.

Why?  It was quite impressive at the time.  In a world with only one or two modulars it delivered three well-sized buildings...two of which we hadn't really ever seen before.  It is really just a charming set.  Pairs perfectly with BTTF too...it's like a little piece of Hill Valley...just add a diner!

If you can get it for well under its RRP (like 40-50% of its RRP) then I'm guessing it will do OK for those at that price point. However I'm not sure how many will say they want to buy that set for 190 USD+ after EOL.

It is a nice detailed set, just way too expensive at RRP (it is 10 USD less than a PF Cargo train set -which also appears overpriced as well), especially when compared to the previous 'city square/transportation' sets like #8404 or #60026 (both of which were on sale many times in their run to sell them).
I just do not think you can expect this set to rise in value EOL dramatically over RRP, 'LEGO store' /Futuron figure in it or not.

The one we grabbed works out to just under 37% off (Big W has it at AU$200, RRP is 250), so I'm happy enough with the price for us, as 20% off is normally the best we get here unless items are on clearance, but even that these days isn't what it used to be (30-40%, used to be up 60%).

As for grabbing them for reselling, I wasn't really contemplating it myself, but found it curious that someone else was going all out to grab as many as they could. If I were to, I'd probably only grab one or two & that's if Big W have a 30% off sale, I have better places to put my money.
