Should I Buy a Death Star? (10188)

I've been thinking about buying a #10188 and I wanted to get one sooner than later because talk of it retiring has been going around for a while. I have also heard of a new bigger better Death star coming out which I would rather have so I'm a bit tossed up. Does anybody have anymore info on this new rumored Death Star?

Hmmm, whilst I really love the set 10188, it has been around for years now, and then I found this - http://www.groovebricks.com/new-lego-star-wars-death-star-coming-in-2016/

    From the linked article:
This new version is supposed to be bigger and it won’t have the Disney branding, which is a plus for many Star Wars fans out there.
Why would a new Star Wars set have no Disney branding? Don't all of the 2015 sets have Disney branding? Why would a new Death Star be any different?

If you want it, and can afford to do so without a hardship of any kind (financial, marital, etc.), then you should get it.  Otherwise, you should not get it.  Btw, the same argument works with a lollipop as well as a Lamborghini.

Pending retirement or replacement is largely irrelevant.

You'd be risking not getting a Death Star at all on a very unsubtantiated rumor.  As far as I know, no Death Star plays into the new movies.  There's no guarantee they'll make a new one.

The current set is AWESOME.  Just get it man.  The worst case is a new one comes out, and you could sell the one you had if you really wanted to, probably at a decent profit.

I'm also skeptical a new one would be bigger. That would jump the price point up to $500 or more. If anything, recent history shows is over and over again that a rehash is almost certainly going to be smaller

This is the best advice I can give after careful thought and consideration:

BUY IT NOW because it is about to retire.
    and also:
TOTALLY WAIT because it will be around for awhile.

Footnotes to my advice can be found in nearly 500 pages of this thread:
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
^^^^ I'd say the opposite. If someone cannot decide if they want a large expensive set, enough to ask if they should buy it, then they probably don't want it enough. There are probably better sets to spend that money on, stuff they want. Sure, they may regret it, but then they'll probably regret missing other stuff too.

Exactly. I have one stashed away. Haven't built it yet because haven't been able to bring myself to break the seals on a $400 set I'm not completely sold on. But don't want it to retire without having one. I'll probably make up my mind about 6 months after EOL

Do not worry about whether a new one comes out. Think about it, what retired Star Wars set has not seen an increase of value? Even the pen sets have increased. Star Wars sets will always be one of the safest themes to go with if not the safest.

I don't think the OP's question has anything to do with market value or resale value at all. Not every buying decision can or should be examined under that light

The spinoff movie, Rogue One, looks set to feature the Death Star I (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-32376871) but release is December 2016...

Mainly smaller sets, battle packs, but also bigger ones that get redone, and then stuff people don't really want such as Jedi starfighter. Especially if you factor in selling fees, shipping etc.

It seems like certain people start new threads a lot without looking for existing threads.  I'm guilty of doing it a time or two...but some people do it A LOT.

At risk of speaking heresy, but I bought one a few years back, built it, and *gasp* didn't really like it that much. Building it was fun but I wasn't sad to sell it and get a pair of modulars with the money instead.

I live in Canada so the Death Star is already $500. ;)

I would be buying this for the build, not the resale.

I was thinking of getting a couple modulars instead which would be nice.

Apologies for making my post, it seems that someone else posted the exact same query shortly before I created my thread on the exact same subject !   Anyway, I have decided not to buy the DS, and instead I have just purchased the UCS slave 1 set.

I really recommend it. It was an awesome build. The build was sometimes repetitive and some random pieces were hard to find while building as it had tons of pieces but the feeling when you saw Death Star rising was kinda cool. Even as a playset it looks great as displayed and it has cool details. It is an epic set and a-must-have. For me at least.

Yes, because this set is so old there will be many out of production parts (aside from this set) like the tie fighter windscreen in the emperor's throne.

I built one and have one new. It is a great set. I would recommend not buying it until after it retires. I'll be more than wiling to sell you mine when it does. ;)

I found a guy near me selling two new sealed for $480 each (they are $500 + tax in Canada) which is a good deal.

I would just get it. I was thinking about it 3 years ago and was undecided. I then made the jump and bought it, but have never regretted it. The set is great, and if you are of a certain age (like me!) you would have grown up with the films when they first came out and every room in the DS is made to remind you of a scene. It was 3 days very enjoyable building with my children and then was on display for 2 years (with quite a bit of play under supervison!) before being careful stored away to be reincarnated another day.

If you're getting it to build, it's very dated.  It's fun, but it's huge and a sphere, meaning you need some really deep shelves to hold it away from the wall.  Plus, dusting it is ridiculous with all the nooks and crannies.  At least with modulars you only need to really worry about the exposed spaces.  Also, and not that it's a true 1-1 comparison, but don't forget, you can get about 2.5 modulars for the price of one DS.
  • B0SSKB0SSK Member Posts: 175
    ^  2.5 modular what?
  • brickupdatebrickupdate Member Posts: 1,020
B0SSKTheLoneTensor meant that for the same $399, you can get:

    $150 modular
    $150 modular
    $100 left over

    Yes, you should buy 10188.
  • HokieJoe99HokieJoe99 Member Posts: 351
    Simple logic tells me that:

    2.5 modulars != 1 Death Star

If you are a Star Wars fan there is nothing quite like it. Sure it is big and the minifigures are dated, but you can use your minifigures from other sets if you want newer versions of them.  The age actually makes it a better deal. Do you think that if it were released today that it would have quite as many pieces and minifigures at the same price?  Most likely it would be significantly higher.

Just buy the Death Star, get both trilogies on Bluray, and build the Death Star while fast forwarding through the parts with Jar-Jar.

No, that's not logic, that's actually the complete inverse of logic, which is emotion.

I consider myself a Star Wars fan, a really honkin big Star Wars fan.  I think it's also obvious I'm a fan of Lego too.  This set just doesn't work for me for the reasons I stated above.  You're picking and choosing your SW love by fast forwarding Jar Jar.  I simply choose to fast forward through this.

Plus you could fill a bathtub with Mixels for $400. Think about that.

    1 DS = 80 Mixels
    80 Mixels = 4000 pieces (rough)

    Ha!
What would you do with all those pieces other then fill a bathtub?

And by the way, do you really need an entire forum of people to justify that you drop $400 on a toy that you've already basically decided to purchase?

I'd go with the 2.5 modulars myself
  • Final_SignFinal_Sign Member Posts: 101
The correct answer is, "D: all of the above".

Get the Death Star, 2.5 modulars, AND a bathtub of Mixels!

At the end of the day, an overwhelming majority of people on here are going to raise their hand and say yes, buy the DS.  But it really comes down to what you want and whether or not you A. Want to get into collecting SW and B. will build it and display it.  Perhaps you just want it for the "iconic" feel and since it "eventually" *cough* will be discontinued.  But you can relay that logic to almost any set.

Ulitmately, my fall back is, if you want it, even ever so slightly, buy it, sit on it, and if it time you decide you didnt want it you should be able to sell for retail if it is still available or sell for retail if it is discontinued.  :)

How about the Sandcrawler?  It's newer than the Death Star and probably won't retire for another year.  Both are rather monocromatic.  Both have a lot of minifigs.  For $100 less I'm more tempted by the Sandcrawler.  Must be the droids and Jawas.  The box art is nice too.

For those that own both what are your opinions?  Which one is more fun to build and own?

I have both, and I would say the Death Star is more fun. There are so many scenes and little surprises built into it. However, I'm not an AFOL who keeps all my sets out for display. I built them both once then dismantled and added the parts to my collection. I like having dark and light gray parts for MOCs too, more so than brown.
  • Sethro3Sethro3 Member Posts: 982
Just looking at the sets, I'd suggest Ewok Village vs Death Star over Sandcrawler vs Death Star. There are a few minifugures in the Sandcrawler, but nothing in comparison to DS or Ewok Village. If you want an actual play experience, Death Star seems like the way to go just because of the variety in scenes.

Rumor has it the DS will be 10% off on May the 4th.
