Wait, I'm confused. The UK is a country? I thought the UK was made up of 4 countries?

Britain = England, Wales, Scotland. UK = England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland + many islands around Britain like Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Jersey, Guernsey and The Shetland Islands, etc. Everything gets confusing after that so I'd search for CGP Grey's YouTube video about it. Personally I'm from England, specifically from an area the copycat of Minnesota in the summer.

I'm from England - Greater London, to be (not very) precise. ;-)

^^ The Isle of Wight is part of England, so doesn't need to be counted twice, same with Shetland and Scotland. Jersey and Guernsey are not part of the UK, neither is the Isle of Man.

See, even people that live in the UK don't know what is going on ;) To be fair, a lot of Americans geographic skills are crap as well.

See, this is why I like the forum, you learn a few things.

The only thing I knew is that the UK is a sovereign state that is made up of 4 countries.

@CCC You are absolutely right and I am happy to be corrected. It clearly says in this wikipedia article that Jersey and Guernsey are different from the UK. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_islands_of_the_British_Isles

The full title is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (Usually shortened to United Kingdom, or UK). This is a sovereign state.

Great Britain (also known as Britain) is an island, and consists of the countries of England, Scotland and Wales.

Note, Great Britain should not be confused with the British Isles, which is the name of the group of islands, and includes the UK, Ireland, as well as three Crown dependencies: the Isle of Man, the Bailiwick of Jersey and the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

Also note that the Government of Ireland does not recognise the term 'British Isles'.

Basically, Crown dependencies are self-governing possessions of the crown, rather than sovereign states in their own right, and they are territories for which the United Kingdom is ultimately responsible. They are not actually part of the United Kingdom.

I hope this clears things up a bit :)

Stuttgart also known as the cradle of the automobile. South Germany in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg and Stuttgart is the capitol. The Württemberg part to be exact. (There is some rivalism between Baden and Württemberg.)

I am from Belgium and was born in the city that is on every bottle of Stella: Leuven.
(and that's my claim to fame ;-))

Still live close by although we might move to my husbands native country, England.
@ Pitfall69: another new thing you can learn today, although maybe not so useful, in the UK they call Stella ' wife beater' because it's stronger then their beer! Although in Belgium this is just a normal beer and we even prefer ones that have double that percentage (or more).

It's not just because of the percentage, as we have a number of stronger beers in the UK. But these tend to be more "craft" type beers and not aimed at the binge drinker. It is mainly because for a number of years (in the UK) Stella has been associated with what the Americans would call white trash. Stella may have been marketed as "reassuringly expensive" a decade ago, but it was a brand that was often discounted in supermarkets which lead to it becoming a favourite of binge drinkers, as it gave a lot of alcoholic content for little money. So it is not that it was stronger, more than it was cheap and strong, and often drunk by the lower end of society.

Note that I say was as the UK brewed Stella is now 4.8%, the manufacturers cut it about three years ago to reduce the tax payable to the government.

or the cheap super strength lagers sometimes referred to as "tramp juice".

As it's been a while since I drank anything with "super" on the can, and I don't hang around bus stations, I don't know anything about these. :-)

Am from a remote country village (no church, school or even a single shop) of maybe 100 people in the middle of a nice green country of just over 4,000,000 people in the middle of a giant blue ocean, some 2,000 kilometres from its next major neighbour, said country often referred to as being a pimple on the back side of the world
    Commonly called New Zealand.

    From sunny Minnesota (U.S.)

@KiwiLegoMeister - So do you know Bret and Jemaine? (Flight of the Conchords)
  • KiwiLegoMeisterKiwiLegoMeister Member Posts: 212
@Elune Yup. all green fields, trees, mountains, and clean running water.   Mostly, anyway. I live at a small secluded beach.
@natro220. Yup. They live right next door.
We also have a comedic phrase in this country. "yeah, right"!
Around the world, there's this thing calls "five degrees of separation" You know someone who knows someone who knows someone, and in 5 steps, everyone knows everyone. In New Zealand its three degrees of separation.  That is pretty true here; but no, I don't actually know Bret or Jemaine.
  • natro220natro220 Member Posts: 545
Ha, thought I would ask, since they knew everyone from New Zealand on the show including the Prime minister.

     - hello from the middle of Middle-Earth, otherwise known as Wellington.
@KiwiLegoMeister - to be picky I think it's just two degrees of separation here!
I've tried before to ask how many of us Middle-Earthers, there must be country stats available for this website - but got no answers.

Thx for the interesting factoid, does it need the stains on it (what is that, mustard?) or its that just a bonus? ;-)

Can't really ' like' your message because that might send the wrong message, not really my type...
