The hat thing has been going on in the US for quite some time. These guys wear hats even when it is hot out. They are called "beanie" hats, but they go by many names like "sock cap", "knit cap", "ski hat"...I think it is part of that "Hipster" style.

The other guy in the video looks like Bryan Johnson from "Comic Book Men". Honestly, if I had a company like Lego, I wouldn't let them dress that way to present a Designer Video. That's just me of course, I'm old school ;)
I kinda wish Bryan Johnson was really in the designer video. It would stop me from spending the entire show each week trying to figure out how he makes a living. His jokes are funny, but not "support yourself financially" funny.  :)

Yeah, I have no idea what he does. He seems to always come in when he feels like it and sits at the counter reading comics.

He has been best friends with Kevin Smith for many years... He doesn't really have any knowledge when it comes to anything toy or comic related, he just kind of hangs out there at the store.. His job is "comic" relief I guess..

But if they are not going to use professional media types I think it's best to let them be themselves as much as possible, including the way they dress. Getting ordinary people to try and be funny/slick/entertaining makes them come across even more cringe worthy than they will trying to be them self IMO.

The worst Lego videos are the IDEAS announcements, making it like some awards show. I'm sure English not being the first language doesn't help.

Why? People are more productive when they're comfortable. The casual attire also makes them feel more down to earth and approachable as opposed to looking like a salesman. Way too much stock is put into something as shallow as a person's attire.

^I'm not saying that they have to wear a 3 piece suit. I'm also not saying that they can't wear what they want while they are working and designing. If I hired a lawyer and he showed up in court dressed like Jimmy Buffet, I would think I wouldn't have much chance of winning my case. There isn't too much stock put into appearances. People should dress for the occasion.

As I said before, I'm "old school". This is just my opinion, but if I showed up my at my past job interviews dressed like either of these guys, I probably would have never been employed in my field.
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
Maybe they do turn up to work in a three piece suit everyday, and lego forces them to dress in the hipster style for videos and conferences to help sell their products to the cool kids.

And if you hired a plumber and he showed up at your house dressed like a lawyer? It's generally accepted that people should dress the part for the job they do.

First, they're not in an interview; who knows what they wore to their interviews. Second, I assume you weren't interviewing for a position as a LEGO designer.

Mega Bloks are too readily available. My bet would be on Nanoblocks.

Which is why Lego is probably chasing the hipsters...

Ha!!! I didn't want to get into a debate. I just have a different point of view. I could be because I came from a long line of military men. I couldn't let my hair grow past a certain length and when we all went out, I had to dress up.

I was putting my Simpsons House back together after my girls destroyed it and got me wanting the Kwik-E-Mart even more. I cannot wait :)

^So, is the Simpsons House a really fun build?  Or is it more fan based.  I hate to get into another theme. I don't think the Simpsons will display well with my cityscape or middle earth and although I've watched many Simpsons episodes it is not a big thing for me.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
I loved building the Simpsons House AND it is fun to "play" with as an adult and definitely fun for both my girls :)
  • BrikingBriking Member Posts: 768
^^ I've built the first 2 books today and it's been good fun.  Hopefully get time to do the last book tomorrow.  And then it's just a matter of waiting...

I think what's been so appealing for me for the Simpsons House is how true to both form and color the set really is compared to the "real deal" I dare say TLG got it right here.

I think the appeal for me is that both the house and the kwik-E-mart are taken straight from "my time" growing up (ie 80s and 90s). Old school rotary phone, pay phones, tube television with rabbit ears, and boxy police cruiser. I love it all. Reminds me of the days when my only cares in the world were my skateboard and the cute girl who lived down the street.

I'm not a Simpsons fan at all but I'm def. in for the mart and I'm strongly considering the house.

It is posted on the lego site now as a May 1 release....$199 for the set, same as the house...wasn't expecting it to be that high.

  • BrikingBriking Member Posts: 768
^ £169.99 in the UK, so £10 cheaper than the house.  May 1st release.
  • piratemania7piratemania7 Member Posts: 2,146

    Probably. Or close to it.

The new Lego Calendar for May advertises the Series 2 Simpsons set.

I haven't seen the sales figures for the Simpsons Series, but it probably wouldn't be too difficult to convince the licensing folks to do a one-shot set of Futurama figures...

My friend works like half a mile from the Lego Store. He's picking it up for me so I don't have to make a 45 minute trip after work.

It's going to be a long day D:

If anyone who builds this has a modular to compare it to, I'd love to see a photo of them side-by-side (preferably from a reasonable distance so there's minimal perspective distortion).

Everyone would take a picture of the whole box; I like to be different :)

Since I'm one of the few people who already own this set, I think I might actually do a review on Eurobricks with pictures but at the same time I want to build it tonight which means the quality of the photographs would be bad. maybe I should just take pictures after it's built.

^^Technically it's not a full written review, his focus was a video review; it still doesn't stop me from doing so :)

I'm pretty sure there will be a few buy the time I get all the pictures and written review together. You guys know I go into small details.

Yes, mine was just a quick little picture one- don't let it discourage you from doing a full one!

So, @Adzbadboy‌ , you really believe you are one of few people that own the Kwik-E-Mart?

They had a whole bunch at my local Lego Store.

Personally, I'm looking forward to @Adzbadboy 's review.

I just did my first full fledged review of this set, if anybody wants to check it out!

    https://thehabitualbrick.wordpress.com/2015/04/19/71016-kwik-e-mart/

It was my first attempt at a major review, so any feedback would be welcomed!

    Bruh dope review <3

"One of my dream sets has always been a supermarket.  Now I know we got the green grocer modular set, but I mean a full on grocery store, with aisle after aisle of goods stocked and ready to sell. While I think that set will remain a dream forever, this one really came as close to something like that as I think I could hope for."

Literally what I think too :)

@jadblz I enjoyed reading your review. I like the pictures of the bags with pieces plus the model as its coming together through the build. My set arrived today so I'm really looking forward to building this set.

This isn't a deal breaker for me (I'll still get one), but Jasper/Frostilicus not being an actual minifig is weak.

@just2good - Let's hope our dream grocery set does someday show up! Till then we gotta make do :/

@tomahawker - Thank you! I'm really glad you liked the pictures, I must have taken hundreds and I tried to pick the best.

@msanders - Congrats!  I hope you enjoy building it, be careful with those stickers lol

Thanks again to everyone who stopped by and checked it out!  I really appreciate all the kind thoughts!

Nice review.  You may want to proof read it again though.  You have a lot of typos.
  • msandersmsanders Member Posts: 1,017
I've now built my Kwik-E-Mart and what can I say?! I love it. It's bigger than I expected based on the photos and the details are just lovely. I'm really tempted to get another one (dream on matey with the price tag!) because it's got some really great parts and I love the yellow and blue colours. I'm such a fan of being able to open buildings with hinges to access the interior for play.

I'm looking forward to showing my son and having some great playtime with this set. He already loves the Simpsons house (he calls it Maggie's house!).
