Lego has overtaken Ferrari in a report on brand strength compiled by Brand Finance to become the strongest brand in the world.

As I noted on the front page article, I wonder how many peoples affinity to the brand LEGO is actually an affinity to all similar brick building toys, not just lego, but they cannot actually tell the difference between lego and the clones.

It wasn't that long ago that people were complaining that (i) regular lego sets don't cater for girls, and (ii) "girls" lego sets (that is, Friends) are sexist stereotypes.

^That´s a good point. Anyway clone brands are quite a small business at the moment compared to lego, luckily.

With everything these days being digital/streamed/online etc. I think Legos biggest appeal to me at least is that you get to be creative, using your hands, not looking at a screen and can have the opportunity to make anything you wish. Also you never get judged.....its just fun.

....now back to my 3rd build for the day. Daughters birthday today and have just built the Lego Frozen, Garmatron and now to start the Battle for Ninjago City.

I tend not to take this kind if news very seriously. Defining what makes a brand 'strong' is not easy. In terms of branding I don't believe that as many people worldwide would be aware of LEGO as of Ferrari or Apple.

However, I am always glad to see the company doing well, so good for TLC!

Went and looked at the picture again after you said that - first minifig I saw was the Island Xtreme Brickster. I had one when I was younger, but a kid at school stole him...happy days. :-P

I believe its not brand awareness that counts in this study. So while lots of people are aware of apple, a good chunk consider them to be a big pile of steaming turd, which makes the brand less strong even though they're so big and make so much profit. By contrast I doubt many people see LEGO as a bad brand, other than those die hard mega bloks and kreo fans.

There are a number of building block fans (mainly kids though) that don't care about the brand. When my kids play at friends' houses, they often have a bucket of Lego, which is really Lego, mb, cobi, knock-off Chinese figures, etc.
