And elves, which is also for girls and @Shib‌ . I would also be surprised if they used minidolls.

Just because I'm in touch with my feminine side :-P

The Minifigures worked for the Simpsons, but I'm afraid it won't work with Scooby Doo.

The former could be debated, in my opinion.

As for Scooby Doo, the character designs posted earlier aren't significantly different in proportion to the character design in The Clone Wars, and those sets have minifigures.

I concur. I see absolutely no way they would use mini dolls.

I think If they were to use minidolls as opposed to minifigs the Lego feel would be diminished and people wouldn't see enough distinction between the Lego sets and the Character Building sets that have come before. And by people, I mean regular Joes (and Josephines), not you educated Brickset lot.

I'm personally hoping and expecting traditional minifigures. While the animation doesn't look too hot, I'm not worried about the minifigs looking bad because as others have pointed out, they'll look about the same once Legofied. What I am worried about is Scooby. If they go with a molded Scooby, he could end up looking less like the original and more like the new one. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

^ I agree, on a personal level I'm not a fan of Mini dolls, as they just don't have the "LEGO" feel to them. So far it hasn't been an issue as any of the themes with Mini dolls are ones I have no real interest in. The day they release a Star Wars set with mini doll's is the day I die a little inside (Ok that's an exaggeration).

I will be interested to see what the Mystery Machine looks like, I hope it's a decent sized set and a good representation of the van.

I suppose they could use minifigs with moulded heads like the Simpsons ones. That might not be so great with the strange looking heads in that new photo. On a side note, that artwork in said photo looks awful.

Assuming they don't update the van to modern version too.

It's a simple equation. Scooby Doo minifigs = I buy one of each set. Scooby Doo minidolls = I skip it and spend my money elsewhere.

Bricklink forum mentioned a rumor that Series 14 CMF figs (released in October) will be all monsters, as a potential Scooby tie-in. I'd like to see it before I'd believe it. But we have gotten Simpsons and Movie themed series, so it's a plausible rumor.

My theory is that if both the Scooby theme and monster Minifigs are true, then series 14 will be Scooby Doo villains: the creeper, the knight, the mummy, the clown, the robot, etc. Hoping this is true, but it's probably unlikely.

I wouldn't EVER make that bet, especially without any idea what Lego is intended. I just think with the popularity of Friends, the release of Elves and the "lankiness" of the Scooby Doo characters; I don't think Lego would use traditional minifigures. I am only speculating.

It has always been obvious to me ever since I was in high school that Shaggy and Scooby were always hungry because of smoking pot and other drug use. I think they even put some of that in the first feature film. I am surprised that Lego would tackle this license, even if the the drug use and sexuality (Thelma) was presumed.

Which saddens me personally. I know it isn't happening, but it does almost feel as though LEGO is moving onto minidolls, leaving minifigures in the dust. We're seeing more minidolls and less minifigures. Not a completely accurate statement, I know, but it feels that way.

Perhaps the following thoughts are just me.... minidolls are sometimes more accurate representations of the actual characters (the lankiness of the scooby doo characters for instance), which is fine. But personally, I preferr the less accurate minifigure representations. My argument being that I always appreciated how LEGO could take some of my favorite film/real-life characters and "squish" them down into my favorite toy, the iconic LEGO minifigure.

^I totally understand Samuel, I want nothing but Minifigures (um...and My Little Pony, but that is a subject for another thread) I don't collect Minidolls. I was just making a case for Minidolls for Scooby Doo.

I don't see minifigures going away in favor of minidolls... it feels like a lot of licensed sets are being marketed for their minifigures more than the builds these days. And minidolls are showing up a lot more, but aside from Disney Princesses they're not exactly the selling point of the Friends or Elves sets, there's a LOT of repetition of characters.

I really hope they go with traditional minifigures for this theme. I could see them doing sculpted heads like the Simpsons but I feel that'd be a mistake. Regular minifigures with normal heads make this line a must-buy for me.

I really, desperately hope they're at least semi-based on this old spec art by Alexandre Boudon:

My biggest worry about this series is the builds, aside from the Mystery Machine. I don't want a lot of half-sets like The Hobbit.

Might want to make the stakes higher then that dude! I am not a purist, have great respect for mega bloks, and the only thing left on my lego "Defiantly want to buy" list besides a BL order or two is i'm waiting for series 6 lego friends.

Am I going to join the betting? No, can't risk it. Knowing my luck, we'll wind up going on vacation in that time frame and I don't want to get screwed out of a trip to the lego store due to a bet. There's no stores close to here so the l.s. is a vacation time only thing and it's been nearly 2 years since the last time I went.

What is the issue with Velma's sexuality? Isn't she just an intelligent, near sighted, history and science nerd that is not as pretty as Daphne. It was the neck scarf wearing flamboyant Fred that was always talk of the playground.

This is going to be all half sets, I can see that coming. The Mystery Mansion will look more like Attack at Weathertop than Helm's Deep. Anyone hoping for another Haunted House masterpiece is going to be sorely disappointed.

Man would love for them to do a ghost pirate ship like in those sketches. Doesn't have to be a part of this theme but would be neat to see. Especially if the sails were glow in the dark =)

Most likely you are correct. I see it being a replacement theme for TMNT. No haunted house size Mansion or Tumbler size Mystry Machine IMO.

I felt like the tmnt theme was fairly well executed with nice mini figures. I just had no interest in them really. If Scooby doo is similar quality I won't be disappointed. Especially if the mystery machine is as cool as the shellraiser.

Yeah, I see Scooby Doo being similar to TMNT as far as the set sizes go. So no big, more detailed sets.

Yup. This has been the concern I have been expressing. My fear is that the builds, especially with a license, and especially with Lego having tried to use fewer pieces as of late, that most of the builds are going to be lame, not fully realized, etc. It am not hoping for a Haunted House pieces but something that is large enough to have all the playability, special features that such a set needs.

Super Heroes is really the only recent licensed theme that I know, but in the playsets for that theme, LEGO does a good job with play features. Malibu Mansion, Batcave, Funhouse, Daily Bugle, Knowhere Escape - all packed in some good play features and look good for the price point.

This. I was hoping Monster Fighters would have continued for that reason alone. If there was ever a theme to deliver something like this in Scooby is it.

I'd just hope for completing the whole gang in as few of sets as possible. I think I bought 3 of 5 TMNT sets to get all the main people I wanted. I don't need variant faces of turtles. I probably won't need variant expressions on these figures either. But I don't want multiples if they double up either...
  • ryjayryjay Member Posts: 1,001
Hmmmmm....never was a fan of Scooby Doo. I'll have to wait and see these sets. The thought of mini figures or mini dolls is interesting....at first thought, I'd like to see it made with the traditional figures, but the cartoon characters are the identity of Scooby Doo and just might work better in doll form. If dolls, then more then likely would pass.

  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
If dolls then I'd pass as well except for possibly the mystery machine if the vehicle looks good. I'd get that and just put my own normal figs together to go with it. I highly doubt they'd do this theme as mini-dolls though.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
Well, according to the rumor, someone has already seen some of the sets and they mentioned they were Minifigures. That's fine because I would rather have Minifigures. Minidolls won't stop me from at least buying the Mystery Machine. I would buy a Volkswagen Camper Van sized Mystery Machine in an instant.

Personally, I'm not a fan. They all look like they have eating disorders. Didn't Scooby and Shaggy spend like 90% of their time eating or looking for something to eat in the original show? Hopefully their LEGO counterparts will be well fed. At the very least they will have access to all the carrots, bananas, berries, pizza and sausages they can eat.

Regular minifigs also have eating disorders, just the other way. Unless they do them as mini-dolls, then they will be as fat as a regular minifig. The downside for me is that they will probably do cloth skirts like Marge and Lisa Simpson rather than printed, but it will give us some new fleshie legs which is good.
Am I the only one who remembers that shaggy and scooby were stoner hippies that always had the munchies?

I agree with this. My concern is less the minifigures, but the sets themselves. Will it truly have the traps, secret passages, and that bit of monster zaniness, or are we going to have sets that have been skimped on bricks and features because of a license name.

I think we all know the answer sadly. there will be vignettes that have these features, but they will all feel likely barely half-complete walls with play features tacked on

  • ShibShib Member Posts: 5,469
Is there really an issue of TLG not putting in play features for licenced theme sets? I can't think of a single licenced set in recent years that hasn't had at very least a catapult. I think the designs are very likely to be similar to the Monster Fighters sets. I don't know how they'd do a secret passage in a set without it being the size of the Haunted House, but Trapdoors I can easily see.

I was quite interested in the idea of a Scooby Doo theme when I first heard the rumours, but to be honest I think the Monster Fighters did the idea so well that I'm only likely to be buying sets that look particularly special in the theme or picking up some additional monster minifigures for the Monster Fighters to take on. More than likely I'll pass on most of the sets for some of the other themes that have my interest better. I can completely see the logic in getting the licence though. At 7 years old I'd have loved some Scooby Doo Lego.

Not sure how one could draw this conclusion really. it's a pretty stark contrast right now. nothing LEGO has done with the minidoll has encroached on minifigure territory at all. they are putting the minidoll in girl-targeted themes. the three themes they've done this so far would not have existed at all if the "girl initiative" didn't exist. so minifigure wise - nothing has been lost

For those unsure of the "sexuality " worry over Velma, remember that Nerds are in thanks to Big Bang Theory and for reference check out some of the Velma Cosplay happening out there... but be careful!

I think Scooby Doo themed Lego is a great idea BTW and look forward o some pictures of the upcoming sets.

Possibly like in #4752 with a revolving door, with the suggestion of a secret passage.

^Fair point, I don't really think of anything like that as a secret passage but see what you mean about it implying it.
  • matticus_bricksmatticus_bricks Member Posts: 651
^^Technically in that set the wardrobe is not a secret passage, it's meant to represent the opening of a wardrobe (Potter geek here :P), but yes, it has been used as a secret passage in several other sets, including Castle sets from the 90's.
    Pitfall69
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
Yes, my point was they could use the revolving door with, for example, a bookcase printed on it as a suggestion of a secret passage. They could even put two studs worth of passage behind it, and you have the implication of a passage. To me, the play value in such a thing is the entrance rather than the passage itself.

So according to the Brick fanatics toy fair report this is happening for sure, with minifigs "with a 70s vibe" (hurrah!)

So it looks like it is going to be £130 / £140 buy in to be able to get the whole gang. I reckon that will put many people (parents) off getting it for kids. It's a shame they don't do the characters across the cheaper sets - they'd probably sell more too. Then have exclusive prints in the bigger set. Unless, of course, there is a CMF set to back this theme up like they did with the Simpsons House, followed by CMFs.

Scooby and Shaggy are in every set while the rest of the gang make only one or two appearances. The villains all look good and definitely look fun, getting the tone dead on for me.

The concerns from some folks that we'd get minidolls instead of minifigures turned out to be unfounded - while there were no figures on display, there was an information card with pictures of the figures printed on it for each set and they were definitely minifigs; this was also confirmed by the LEGO rep.

No Scrappy, incidentally.... :-) There will however be two versions of Scooby - sitting and running - and he looks great in the pictures!

The builds themselves were preliminary; some such as the Mystery Machine even had what looked like 3D printed elements included, and there were no stickers. Even so, a couple of the models had a decidedly 'Monster Fighters' vibe to them, particularly the Mystery Mansion, and it appears that one of the sets will include the Swamp Creature seen in #9461.

Launch date will be in August I believe.
