The bottom line is that this Target never puts anything down to 50%... it's 30 at the most. So I felt like they put this set out at 50% knowing that it was tampered with. And I just don't get that.

I've purchased clearance items where the seals appeared to be intact. Here the box was glued shut. There should have been a little give between the seals. They also went through the effort to heat seal the interior bags after taking out the figs. Not sure why they bothered.

I get that this conversation is needed, but honestly a little worried that it gives people ideas. I have taken pictures and emailed them to LEGO to show them and encourage them to try and fix it.
  • SolariousSolarious Member Posts: 317
I went to a super ghetto Walmart yesterday and I bet a good 50% of the boxes over $50 were clearly tampered with
Too bad- they generally have fantastic clearance (and did) but I felt I just couldn't trust anything enough to bother with it
Ended up buying a $6 Star Wars Micro Fighter X-Wing and left annoyed by the whole deal
  • SolariousSolarious Member Posts: 317
I did find a good deal at another store though
Again in a low income neighborhood and yet again a lot of damaged boxes (though not as many by far) but only in the higher end sets

And they strangely had a display of Minecraft that looked like it was starting to gather dust because it hadn't even been touched since the stockboy

Believe me, I was floored when my local Target marked Battle for Ninjago City down to 50% off. First time I've seen something that low, and it was a desirable set to boot! The two boxes looked case-fresh with zero signs that they'd even ever been handled.

With that said, I don't buy sets from the major retailers any more without opening them to inspect the contents. It's not worth the headache from a reselling/trading perspective one day down the road.
  • Pacific493Pacific493 Member Posts: 379
Personally, I think that all of this talk about tampered sets to be completely overblown. I buy and sell thousands of Lego sets every year and have done so for many years. In that time, I have only had one set returned because it had been tampered with before I bought it...and I have not been particularly discriminate when it comes to the sets that I buy or retailers who I buy them from. There are certainly people out there who do this, but I have seen no evidence to suggest that it is a widespread problem. If it were, the first thing that I would expect to see would be a change in retailer's return policy for Lego.

@Pacific493‌ I generally agree with your statement. I have personally seen 3 or 4 sets that I knew to be tampered with (retaped and lighter in weight) but I think it is largely overblown as well. At least in my neck of the woods (KY).

@Pacific493 You haven't seen the shelf at a local TRU that had at least 10 sets at one point all clearly broken open and labeled by TRU to be missing all figs. They were only cutting the prices by about $10 because of it to boot.

By chance is this one of the TRU's closing? What a horrific business practice; just alienates everyone!

To me, that's an entirely different situation. I have seen plenty of sets in store that were open, crushed to the point where parts could have been removed, or opened and retaped in a way that made it obvious the person who did so was not trying to conceal the fact that the set had been opened. What I haven't seen in any material way are situations in which sets were opened and resealed in a way that made it difficult or impossible to detect the fact that the set had been opened. That seems to be the situation that creates paralyzing fear among some folks here and elsewhere.

^ I just saw some of the same at my local Target. Once again, late Thursday morning proves to be the best time to check for new markdowns during clearance periods.

Got a #31021, left one on the shelf. Passed up #70131 and #70725 at 50% off.

However, the best part of the trip was finding all of the new Mixels! I picked up a set of the Orbitronz. They also had the new Chima battle packs.

The LED lights and other accessories are 70% off, so if you like those, don't forget to check the back endcap of the LEGO aisle.
Mostly Chima and a couple of Ninjago sets on discount in my area.
    #75041 for $12
    #76018 for $25 (only 1)
    #75004 for $25
    #60045 for $22
  • adol7adol7 Member Posts: 150
I was all jazzed to expect 50% or 70% at one of mine today....15% still. Ridic. The inconsistency kills me.

^^ I camped out at 7:30 at a target that I had scored good deals in the past and got nothing. TONS of great stuff the week before but virtually nothing left. It is possible that this store clears out the toys on Wednesday but it's not the first time that I seen employees hoards the stuff for themselves. I have caught them in the act; employees gather around the employee who is adjusting the prices and started to walk off with the goods.

Showed up late at another Target that normally had nothing and I actually got a few gems (leftovers). While I should be grateful that I got something, wish I had gotten to this Target sooner and likely I would have scored more!

Best items I got are a smashed up #70814 Emmet's Construct-o-Mech for $35, and 50% off Snap Circuits Lights (I know not Lego but still kewl!).

I finally found a clearance item. They had the Ninjago Mechdragon 50% off. I considered it, but $45 is still a lot of money for a theme I don't care about and pieces I am unsure if I'll be able to use. But nice seeing a clearance item for once. It seems to be pretty rare near me.

I passed on a Ninjacopter for $29.98. Will I ever regret this?
  • OUWxGuesserOUWxGuesser Member Posts: 92
#75013 for $25 and #75041 for $12.50 That was good enough to tempt me! More importantly, I found thestash of CMF S13 and finished up grabbing the ones I needed.

You never know with Ninjago and Chima. One of my boys only wanted that set for Pixal. Got it for Xmas and it's still in the box. :(

You can see several us can't pull the trigger on those & Mechdragons at 50%. That has to say something. :p

Yet it still happened, those same people will try it again because it worked out for them at least once. They just need to get better or have gotten better at it and it will keep working for them.

If you are not a ninjago fan, you are not missing much.
It is a pretty unique build but I wasn't too impressed with it. MIT is also pretty flimsy like many ninjago vehicles. Pixal is unique to this set as well as the partially exposed Zane.

On the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised with the mech dragon. It was not a set I was interested in but my son needed the sensei garmadon. I ended up buying it to get the free minifigure cube from target and I really enjoyed the build as well as the final product of both the dragon and the vehicle. The dragon actually looks pretty nice on display.

I stared at a stack of 3 of them ($45) today for about 10 minutes. Not a Ninjago collector, but was almost compelled entirely by the purple elements. Walked away from them. Might end up regretting not getting at least one of them.

I Did the same thing today at Target with the exact same sets
Just not my thing enough but I did consider it
It was too much loot to spend to thrown right into the parts drawer
  • SolariousSolarious Member Posts: 317
There was actually a ton of Chima stuff 30-50% off
Good deals but is that just a theme that people tend to pass on?
  • mathewmathew Member Posts: 2,099
Not to derail this thread too much, but looking at some of the current Ninjago sets my thoughts are "What the heck happened?!". Aside from Ninjago City, the rest of the sets are a incoherent mess. It's as if they tried to take left over Galaxy Squad sets and modified them to fit. My kids lost interest a year or two ago. I'm wondering if the upcoming movie is going to be a bomb.

Our Target has a couple of Ice Cream machines at 50% off. If anyone wants one for a trade, let me know.

@luckie_reubs‌ Where are you/where is store?
  • tamamahmtamamahm Member Posts: 1,987
I did not bother to even go out, simply because there was next to nothing out there being clearanced that I had any interest in.
  • SolariousSolarious Member Posts: 317
Id be down with a $15 Ice Cream Machine
What are you interested in trading?
  • starfailurestarfailure Member Posts: 138
i grabbed a few MechDragons from a going-OOB TRU for $36/ea. The Ninjacopter at 50% wasn't as compelling.
  • eggsheneggshen Member Posts: 600
I'm a pretty huge Ninjago fan (so maybe my opinion is skewed) but I think the Ninjacopter is a great build. There is some cool technic magic going on in the rear of the copter that makes the cannons and propeller turn when you twist the rear of the copter. And the cannons have some neat connections to make the firing buttons more hidden. It is a little fragile though, but some good stuff going on.
  • Sethro3Sethro3 Member Posts: 998
Same here on the Mechdragon. Same price too. I considered it, but then I could think of a lot of other sets/figures/pieces I want that I could get for $45 instead of that random set that I wouldn't normally have purchased. Willpower? Regret? Who knows what the future will hold.

The Target stores in my area just marked all of their remaining clearance toys down to 50-70% off. I got 2 of Helicopter Surveilance for $40 each, 2 of Furry creatures for $10 each and 2 of the Lion Legend beasts for $5 each.
  • oansunoansun Member Posts: 87
That the right price on the Helicopter with the "radar" on front and totally not a cannon.
  • oansunoansun Member Posts: 87
Mine put the Vulture Droid down to 12.48
  • TkattTkatt Member Posts: 472
I couldn't believe they were trying to sell it for $80 originally. But at $40 I felt it was worth it. (Actually about $37- red card extra 5% off)
  • oansunoansun Member Posts: 87
    Love that Red Card.

@Tkatt‌ and others posting here: please for my sanity's sake mention which city/state you are finding clearance items!
  • oldtodd33oldtodd33 Member Posts: 2,696
^ I am in Colorado and have seen the large Ninjago sets at half off also. I have passed on all of them too.

Went today to a couple of IE Targets and they were cleaned out of most Lego. Found a few misc 50% sets scattered around. Mostly Chima and the Ninjago sets. All the Star Wars sets I wanted were all gone.

Found a Target with clearance aisle at 70% off tonight, but the Lego had not yet been marked past 50%. Asked, and the electronics manager said it was a mistake. He told me to grab what I wanted at 70% off so they could clear the shelf space.

Wanting to help his need for shelf space, I'm now sitting with 7 copies of #70013 Equilas Ultra Striker, 4 copies of #70143 Sir Fangar's Sabertooth Walker, 1 copy of #75013 Umbaran MHC, and a scattering of smaller sets. I think I'm going to have a parts draw party all by myself :open_mouth:

Nice haul. However, seems to me that the employee went rogue with giving in to the pricing.

Found Emmet's mech, the large coast guard boat, large police helicopter, police pickup/boat, coast guard copter and the Superman Duplo set all at half off. Also grabbed six of the coast guard jet ski/shark sets at $2.08 each. I'm happy with the haul.

I'm in CA and it's like LEGO went from 15% to 50% overnight.

We are still finding sets being slowly clearanced and marked down at targets, Fred Meyer and WM. Just a few at a time. Waiting for the ones we want Polys are extinct here. Lots of mixel
3s. Tons of ninja and Chima that we are not into.
  • krklintkrklint Member Posts: 502
@1265, Rogue? nope. The sales staff member was a manager. The sets were all in the aisle marked clearance, signs said all items 70% off, and all items except Lego were 70% off. Target has a policy that if items are stocked on an end-cap or in a clearance aisle, they will match that sales price for that end-cap, even if the item was misplaced by an employee. These items were not misplaced, either, as I'm finding them in every Target store in Miami in the clearance aisle.
  • jadeirenejadeirene Member Posts: 474
^ Huh, that's not the experience I had. The Target I went to had signs with 50% off clearance. I saw a couple of sets I wanted with clearance stickers, but they were only marked 15% off. I saw a Target employee marking the clearance stuff and asked if all the clearance was supposed to be 50% off, and he said that the prices are as marked and wouldn't adjust it for me.
  • krklintkrklint Member Posts: 502
@jadeirene, at that point talking to a manager is the way to go. Often the regular staff does not know all the policies. Target does circle through employees enough where not everyone is trained on various policies. Normally it does take a manager's clearance to give the excess discount.

Often within the clearance aisle they will have signs up showing that certain sections have varying clearance, but if every sign in the aisle states 50% off, then all items in that area should be 50% off. Does take talking to a manager to get the posted discount though. In the end, they need that space for full-priced items.
  • jadeirenejadeirene Member Posts: 474
^ That's good to know. I didn't have the time or energy to press the issue, but maybe next time I will.
