I love the train layouts that have a hinged lift up table top like at a bar or pub. It gives you a small area to work and have easy access to all areas of your layout.

Has anyone taken the time to substitute colors for the Emerald Night to turn it completely black or some other color? Would love to see pictures of the completed set if some has done this.
Did it just a couple of months ago!

I just did an all black one for my LEGO Movie layout for Brickworld Indy last week.  I'll try and post a photo later.

Thank you Sir! Looking forward to it...

I would really like to see TLG make a greater variety of shapes in what I call the drab colors. When you see images of older trains, they always seem to be darker colors or rusty colored. While TLG does have a lot of good colors, they just don't have them in the shape that I would want/need. A good example is the sliding doors one might see on a rusty-brown railroad car. TLG has these doors in a couple of grays (Part# 4583713); but not in rusty-brown to my knowledge. If TLG would just produce a better selection of good colored train parts, I would be content with MOCing my trains.

On the subject of space, I've always wanted to build a shelf around the perimeter of a room near the ceiling and install some train tracks on it. I think it would be kind of neat to watch it go, although my wife might not appreciate it. I guess I could periodically attach a couple of Swiffers to it and tell her it was there for dusting purposes.

It is neat, and I highly recommend it (though these aren't Lego)  :)  See also Pitfall's previous posts on the subject.

  • TheLoneTensorTheLoneTensor Member Posts: 3,937
Yeah, it's a great compromise when the wife won't let you have an entire room for trains.

@TheLoneTensor - What model train are those? Shameless plug-in here, but I do have some old Lionel I'm looking to sell. Don't know if anyone would be interested? I never really thought about asking a LEGO forum.
  • TheLoneTensorTheLoneTensor Member Posts: 3,937
Those are MTH O scale, same size as Lionel, just a smidge bigger than Lego scale.  If they weren't already up there, the Lego trains would be.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
Didn't MTH buy Lionel? I always wondered exactly how close Lego scale was to O scale. I love MTH Trains.
  • TheLoneTensorTheLoneTensor Member Posts: 3,937
It's a partnership, kinda.  The drama is pretty weird actually, as the two companies were bitter enemies but realized they were both better off partnering for some stuff.  MTH now makes Lionel Tinplate trains via licensing with MTH electronics and sounds inside.  This would not be unlike Pepsi bottling and selling Mellow Yellow bottles filled with Mountain Dew.

My set up is very similar to @TheLoneTensor 's, but mine is at our place of business. The is the only recent picture I have of mine. It is still a work in progress.

Every time I see Pitfall's setup (though not pictured here) is his Santa Fe's, and I remember seeing lots of them at TRU on the shelf once and (not really being out of the DA yet) thinking, that's cool, but nah...  Oh the regret.

Don't get me started on numbered Santa Fe's - thought I was SO SO clever with the 15 or so of these I was selling on eBay back in the day for $60 USD and doubling my money....

Back on target here, I think the Santa Fe would be a fantastic next expert train.  I'm sure I or someone else has already said this, but it's worth repeating.  The war bonnet (on the F3 engine mostly) is the "Coke" of trains.  Most everyone instantly recognizes it as the epitome of toy trains.

We do have potential patterns though with the last three models, take from them what you will:

    Steam | Diesel | Electric
    Passenger | Freight | Passenger
Not branded | Branded | Not branded
Rotary Motor | PF power truck | PF power truck
Lights | No lights | Lights
    2 carriages (technically) | 2 carriages | 2 carriages
No support vehicles | 1 support vehicle | No support vehicles
    3 minifigs | 3 minifigs | 6 minifigs

So we're expecting a branded freight mag-lev, with pf power, no lights, 2 carriages, 1 support vehicle and 6 minifigs.  ;)

    presumably you can also add

    EUR | US | EUR

Just another piece of data, train wheels (both flanged and non) are not available in LDD proper.  I hope that doesn't mean a US steamer is off the table.  Then again, I'm not sure what determines what parts do or do not show up in non-extended LDD, so maybe this is not related.

My lest favorite train (of the ones I have) has become the Emerald Night.  It just doesn't run well for me, it goes better in reverse.  There is a hitch in its get-a-long in forward.  Any tuning suggestions from all the train experts on this thread?

^Check the gears and make sure they are tight but not too tight.

I wouldn't mind a new steam train or newer diesel/electric train though. I've had enough of the bullet trains for now.

    2) This mod: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=37468
    3) Swapping the 5L drive rod lift arms with 7L lift arms

Those three, relatively minor upgrades serve to make the engine run much more smoothly.

Lack of space is why I don't have my trains set up at home - I just take them to shows and set them up there instead.

Having just spent the last 36 hours constructing and playing with my nephews new (and first ever) Lego train (#60052 Cargo Train) I thought I would see if anyone has heard anything about any new trains coming along? I know this is probably now just wishful thinking given the total lack of even any rumours of a new expert train, but you never know.

I'm not complaining about this, but it seems like a huge creative short-cut to basically combine the WV with the Expert Train set.

(I just hope it is good.  Please, please, please!)

Personally I think I will be happy with whatever the train looks like but would love to have a beautiful functional train on a short track!  A guy can dream!  Its one series I am sorry to have missed out on a number of previous sets.

I'd mich rather they dispense with the track and mini-build accessories and dedicatell all of the resources on the engine and tender.

Agreed!  Far too many sets get shortchanged the primary structure to include a mediocre accessory vehicle.

@KingDave Might I suggest getting a Maersk Train off the aftermarket? One of my favorite sets ever. Beautiful locomotive.

As fun as a winter train will be I expect it will keep us from getting a new Expert train for use in everyday City layouts for a good while unfortunately.

If it's available from October it'll probably be revealed in August/early September time(ish), either officially, via the store calendar, or from server updates.

Or leaks. Leaks can happen too.

If they dispense with the track completely in the set, then there is the chance that they don't make it compatible with track (such as MF train).

^Maybe it will be an ice-train and come with med. azure narrow gauge track borrowed from the Friends coaster...

I suspect it'll be a similar size to the #79111 Constitution Train Chase set, with a loop of track and a few trackside builds. That'd be no bad thing, as that was probably one of the best Lego trains there's been in recent years.

May I butt in and remind everyone that none of the creator trains have come with track, and neither did the last Winter train...

Different time and different market, if it does come without track it will likely be met with harsher criticism than I f it doesn't- yes as AFOLs we generally know that track to s available separately and where to get it, general public not so much.
I think something similar to constitution train (as @Paperballpark said) is a good guess

^ fair point - the only place save Smyths I've seen selling track is Lego themselves.
  • playwellplaywell Member Posts: 2,309
But remember this is not a normal retail set. So if you can find the train you should be able to find the track.

I am hoping that if the new Winter Train sells well TLG may have a re-think about the Expert train line and start making some more. From what I could tell they always seemed to sell well, the secondary market price is always quite high for them so that shows the demand.

Aside from the 2015 WV re-tread and Hoth, I don't have much to complain about.
