Beginner how-to for Train Power Functions 88002?

(If this is too basic, let me know. I did some searching, but didn't find much...)

I am looking for basic info on Train Power Functions #88002. I bought it and the battery box #8881 to power my Lone Ranger Constitution #79111, so I can mod it and turn it into a Christmas train!

Tonight I did a test run, without regard to aesthetics. I put the 79111 on the 88002 PF trucks and connected it to the 8881. The train sped off at such speed that it flew off the tracks! I tried adding more weight and using the small wheels, but it didn't really help. I don't think there are any gears that can be switched or ways to set the power to half.

Is it as simple as having the #8879 IR Speed Remote Controller? Or am I missing something?

@Natebw, yes the IR will fix that as you can regulate the speed. Alternatively, you could use the battery box #8878 as it has a speed selector and also would be easier to "hide" in a train.

Yes? How did it run without the remote? Using the remote you can keep it to a medium speed. There's a post somewhere here about modding the tender for the battery box.
