Trolling AFOLs because the kids don't care, then? ;-)

I've cut (both with a knife and with scissors) a few times below that line yet still ended up with a closed bag, so I'm intrigued. or trolled. :)

It's nearly May 17th here and it's not out yet. Lucky for me I never get sets at midnight release, except for #21313 which I didn't have to wait for at all.

Well, #10261 is finally showing as "Available now". The "not available in your country" message seems to have gone and it's possible to add the set to the bag, at least for me:

More of a "what are you not buying right now" though. Sticking to hunting policemen for now (Obligatory hi to GCHQ/NSA/other SIGINTs) and keeping the birthday present pool well-stocked.

I'll likely give in when Ninjago City Docks is released in two weeks though.

James loves using him to play out the scene when the GotG went to give Taneleer the power gem (he wants TLG to make a Howard, for now Donald Duck is a stand in). It was a pity that TLG didn't release a variant of him in one of the sets for GotG or the Avengers, it would be awesome to have one of him closer to his comic/cartoon appearance.

All sorts of buying at the moment! My other half came back from shopping at Leeds with all the JL Brickheadz sets. I spotted the Royal Talon Fighter at Sainsbury's for £20, so I got that, and today I've noticed that Amazon have dropped a load of sets by 33% so I took the opportunity to finish off my IW collection  ( #76103 Corvus Glaive Thresher Attack) - thanks Brickset Amazon discount page!

City, friends and Ninjago Summer sets popping up in multiple places in these parts (BeNeLux, Germany). Some nice discounts to be had already. Tried to show restraint and only ordered #70657 Ninjago docks from Amazon.de for €183,29 (Belgian RRP is 249,99 €).

@Huw @drdavewatford ;: these sets are not yet listed in the Amazon shopper section on the main site nor are there buy tabs/links for these sets on their individual set pages. Might be good to remedy that so Bricksetters can more easily buy though a BS affiliate link to support the site?

^buy the one you like. Who cares what randos on the internet say. That said, DO has been out a few years and could retire soon so if you want both a safer bet is to grab that now and wait on the Diner as it will be out for a few years longer for sure.

That's a really good point. How much longer do you think DO has before it's retired? I don't want to miss out and then have to pay a fortune for it elsewhere.

I remember reading only positive reviews of Downtown Diner, but maybe I have a selective memory? Or do you mean youtube "reviews"? Then definitely echoing @Bumblepants " Who cares what randos on the internet say."

Currently available modulars by year released: Parisian Restaurant (2014) > Detective's Office (2015) > Brick Bank (2016) > Assembly Square (2017) > Downtown Diner (2018)

So *IF* (no guarantees) TLG sticks to how they have been handling modular retirements recently, PR should be on the chopping block sometime come autumn, with DO only retiring next year.

Depending on sales numbers TLG might decide different, and AS is a wildcard due to its size.

We've had a bit of discussion about which modular will be on the chopping block this year.  I think the consensus is that one probably will be, considering the number of large D2C sets LEGO is currently supporting.  The two that I've seen considered to be more at risk are Parisian Restaurant and Detective's Office.  While PR has been out longer than DO, PR has been wildly popular and DO is a little underwhelming at first glance against the rest of the current modular lineup.  (This is not to say DO is bad!  It's a great set, but it doesn't have the first glance wow factor that most of the rest of the line does, which could lead to the rest of the line stealing sales from DO for people that aren't of the 'gotta catch them all' variety.)

Anyways, the conclusion is that one of the current modulars will likely retire this year, and PR and DO are most at risk.  Personally, if you're going between DO and DD, but know that you eventually want both, I would prioritize DO.  DD is likely to be around for at the very least a couple more years, and maybe as many as 5 more years if modulars start following the pattern of the modulars going back to the Fire Brigade release in 2009.  (Other than the Town Hall, of course, which was a massive outlier in that regard.)

Just bought the Ninjago City Docks with £15 off from Amazon. A bit of an impulse purchase - do you all think I made the right decision? I am really liking the look of the set but I don’t have Ninjago City yet, so I thought I’d test the waters with this set.

    It depends .....
It will almost certainly be cheaper at some point in the future.
But if you have the money and build it now, you were probably right to buy it now.

Get the City as soon as you see it for a discount of 20% or better ....

The cheapest that the City has gone to is £199, a discount of just under 24%. It's a stonking set and I really can't see it dropping much less than that. As a standalone I don't think the Docks holds up to the City at all, either in design or price. I wouldn't buy it if I hadn't already got the City and guess that's the same for most potential buyers.

If I hadn't got either and could afford £185 for the docks, I'd stump up the extra for the City and get that first. If I had to get the docks first, buying direct from Lego now would seem to be a better deal than £15 off, with the current promotional freebie, the VIP points and possible Quidco/TCB.

If you can wait, as I will, my guess, for what it's worth, is that it will drop to around £120/130 at some point.

I loved both of them. The Diner was my first build. I think I did have more fun putting together the detective office though. The detective office is older so maybe that one first? I am not sure when it is set to retire.

I think the build is going to be enjoyable so I don`t think you will regret it - the only regret might be that you will want to buy the Ninjago City set to go with it so costing you more!!! :-)

I bought the Docks from Amazon Germany when it was priced at 185 Euros the other day (birthday present!). It worked out at 200 Swiss Francs delivered to Switzerland. Its listed for 299 Swiss francs on Lego shop, so for me its a great saving. I think its only sold in Toys r us in Switzerland but discounts are rare and 20% at best so I`m happy with my purchase.

Enjoy the build when you receive it! I can`t wait for my birthday end of this month!

@b1uevoid I think it depends on whether you want to focus on the exterior or interior, whether you want to eventually get both and whether you're more excited to build it or to display it. The Detective's Office had one of the best building experiences for me. Its facade is, as others have said, a bit dull, but its interior is full of details and secrets. It's also probably going to retire at the end of next year, and I think it's the only Modular Building to contain a standalone toilet. Not part of an apartment or a business or anything, just a toilet with a door and a window, on the second floor landing.
I don't own the Diner but it looks like it's got a more attractive and unique exterior and would work better as a standalone than others. If you're looking to get multiple modulars in the future, though, you're going to regret starting with this one. It'll retire last out of the current bunch and it doesn't really quite "fit" with any others in terms of style. Well, that applies to a lot of modulars, but you can always rearrange your lineup so that the bold, chunky Town Hall (for example) isn't leaving the dainty and frail Parisian Restaurant in its shadow. You can't really do that for the Downtown Diner.

@b1uevoid I agree, the DO will probably retire before the diner. I've built both and really enjoyed both a lot. They both have great techniques and surprises. And although the Diner looks a bit different I really don't think it looks out of place. I know I'm also just a random person on the internet too but hey ho, I wanted to add my 2 cents :)

After having spend nothing on lego for quiet some time I recently got drawn in again starting with the London bus. A lovely set that I have been wanting for quiet some time and while it is a good set,it does unfortunatly not quiet match the design quality of the VW van.

Since I have not spend much for over 1 year I decided to allow myself a big purchase again. My collection thus far consists of mostly 1 off sets with little connection to eachoter, sets that do well when displayed on their own and that I like because they are awesome and/or well designed.

Now for my purchase I am in doubt between several sets

-porche 911 gt3 rs. (I think this one looks much better then the Bugatti,it also is on sale a lot so could be gotten relatively cheap)  A set that looks awesome but the downside for me is the technical part (as it has been with all technic sets that use the new system). The technical part is not up to the task at all which is disappointing for a technic set. Even something simple as steering is very difficult and has an enormous amount of friction, let alone other functions. (this truly was much and much better with the old technic system)

-ninjago city+city dogs. They look awesome and while i am not a big fan of ninjago in general these sets can stand on their own very well. I will only buy one now but once you bought one my experience is that you will buy the other as well to complete the set,you will also end up buying future expansions to the city and this will end up being an expensive purchase in the long run, 550 euro to start with.

-assembly square. This would round out my modular collection nicely. I do have 5 modular buildings (pet shop to brick bank) and I did stop buying them with the downtown diner. It is an expensive collection to keep buying,i am not a fan of the design of downtown diner much (imo it doesn't go well with the other modular buildings and there are some more aspects I don't like) so this for me is a good moment to get out of this line. Assembly square would be a nice end to it and would give me more then sufficient buildings and bricks to make a lego city part for display. The downside is that it is a bit boring set in general,of all the expensive sets that I bought the modulars give me the least amount of pleasure and makes me the least happy (though I still love them). The sets that give me the most pleasure are more or less stand alone sets like the seacow and tower of orthanc.

-ucs millennium falcon. The most expensive one,the one almost everyone wants. While being a big starwars fan I actually only have 1 lego starwars set thus far (ucs super star destroyer, the 2nd set I bought after the vw van pulled me out of my dark ages). This set would be a good addition, and it would also give me an excuse to not buy more starwars sets for some time to come, once you have this one what more is there to get. The disadvantage is that while I can buy this set it kinda is to expensive for me and I know I probably should not.

-lego roller coaster. I don't have any other fairground theme sets yet. They do look very nice together but the coaster I think can also perfectly work on its own and would not require you to buy every other set in the line. The downside to me is that while it is awesome it is also a bit stale and 1 dimensional, contrary to for example a set like ninjago city.

So ya,still undecided to what to purchase. Beeing on a budget has its downsides but it also has a few upsides. The anticipation and picking of a set to buy is fun and has been entertaining me for over 2 weeks now.

Original idea was to buy ninjago city, then I started calculating to convince myself that I might as well buy the MF instead. Slowly coming to my senses the other options crossed my mind. Right now I am on the roller coaster but will most likely get back to ninjago city. First intention is often best. O well, some more time to decide and enjoy comparing sets. Will let know how it ended and what I bought in the end lol.

Many thanks for all the responses. They've been really helpful. I'm going to go with the Detectives Office first because I don't want to run the risk of it being retired and then having to pay over the odds for it. I'll hopefully get the Diner next month.

I'll admit I've not been drawn to the exterior of the Detectives Office. But I've seen the set reviewed on Youtube and the interior is far more exciting.
I've enjoyed all the modulars I've built so far. My favourite has been Assembly Square. A really fun build and great value for money. My one gripe was the 'lego fan' layout in the flat. I couldn't work out what that was supposed to be at first. So that's gone and I've replaced it with a TV and Sound System.

As for the cut line on CMF bags not being low enough to actually open the bag - it's not just LEGO, I see some food packaging similarly inaccurately labeled.

I have only seen #75201 discounted by 30% so far; might now be tempted to do this mod if I see it at 50%.
