I also keep trying to gut my wanted list, but that usually means I buy more stuff that's on it. Not the way to go I presume? :o

I've heard about the LEGO education set of the Panama Canal (2000451) , could someone give me their thoughts on it? Is it worth to buy it?

For me it was a matter of REALLY thinking about themes. Do I really want to go after this theme right now or can I give it up? If I could I decided to give it up. It took a huge chunk off the List. Does that mean I won't buy off the Not-Owned section of my collection. Heck no! I'm engineering a trade right now for around 17 sets, around half are not on my want list and I'm cool with that.

But by getting the Want List down? I'm less compelled to shop for older stuff every time I have extra cash, which is often.

More stuff from my summer spending spree...

I'm real close to finishing up Ultra Agents. Need to get a new Hurricane Heist that isn't pulverized, then the two big boys and one set that for reasons which elude me is damned expensive for what it is...#70171 Ultrasonic Showdown.

Guitar was missing from $3 #41104, but I can tolerate that, especially since there were a few extra bricks

@sid3windr I typed 41104 (Pop Star Dressing Room) but I meant #41004 Rehearsal Stage

I never catch any flak buying girly LEGO, anybody run into ageist or gender roles nonsense? Even if someone has that mindset, they might assume I'm buying it for young female relatives. Mostly cashiers are surprised by how much LEGO I'm buying over whatever type.

Let's imagine I had the chance to buy the following Harry Potter sets (all with boxes in moderate but flattened condition and instructions):

#4841 Hogwarts Express (no blue car, no figs)
    #4840 The Burrow (no figs)
#4866 The Knight Bus (no figs)
    #4736 Freeing Dobby (complete)
    #4867 Hogwarts (no figs)
    #4842 Hogwarts Castle (no figs)

What would be the crazy, can't walk away, have to buy, price? Honestly, I'd be looking to resell at some point and would hope for a return on investment (though I recognize that is a dying hope more and more). I don't have a Bricklink store, so would like try to sell here or on some local sell site or app which would demand a lower price than BL to make it worth while.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm just torn!

Contacted customs counterfeit division again, my Bricklink order from Indonesia has been deemed to be The Real Thing(tm). Now just gotta wait for it to go through actual customs so I can get slapped with a hefty import bill :-) :-(

A lot of the value in Harry Potter sets is tied to the minifigs. I wouldn't buy those for investment. Of course if your buy-in is low enough anything* could be a good investment.

In reference to my post a few above, because I honestly have no idea except to look at BL prices and selling history, would $150 for everything be a decent price? Not sure if there would be any meat left for a potential future sale?
  • YodaliciousYodalicious Member Posts: 1,366
@Switchfoot55 $150 isn't bad, but the problem as was said above is the lack of minifigs. If you want those sets for you, then that's a good deal, but for investment purposes, that's tough. The only minifigs you are getting are the ones from Freeing Dobby and only Dobby is exclusive to that set. The Harry in that set is in 7 others and the Lucious is in 3. A lot of the "value" in the HP line is the minifigs, because--to be honest--a lot of the sets actually aren't that great. The Burrow itself isn't all that pleasing and the smaller of the two Hogwarts is a very small segment of the building.

Ultimately, decide what you're going to do with the sets. There probably isn't a huge market for them without the minifigs. I bought #4842 after it was retired for a pretty penny; then recently, bought a second copy without the minifigs because I'm going to double it up. The one without the minifigs was drastically discounted. So there are people out there that will want them without the minifigs, but you have to be willing to cut a good deal and find those people.
  • Switchfoot55Switchfoot55 Member Posts: 3,484
    @Yodalicious, I appreciate the response.

It all certainly makes sense. I'll have to weigh some options and decide what to do. As much as I love all things Harry Potter, with other more inciting sets on the horizon, I have to be strategic with my budget.
  • FauchFauch Member Posts: 2,711
150$ for all these sets would be tempting. I think the castle alone is worth 200? even without minifigs? I have little interest in harry potter figs, but I like most of the sets.
  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,354
#10234 complete built with box and booklets
    #70144, #75170, #75176 without figures
All from @SumoLego for $100. He gave me a good deal to free up space. We live in the same area, so no shipping necessary. I have a BrickLink store as an outlet for the parts.

@SeanTheCollector I'm not all that into Ninjago, but I gotta say that when I saw that Destiny's Bounty on the shelf I've been giving serious consideration to picking it up. It looks great.

And in other news...I opened a can of worms by getting this years SDCC Brickheadz. I'm such an idiot. Such a Brickheadz completist idiot. Looks like the Supes and WW set is the priciest. Crap.

Didn't want to follow myself but no one has posted in here for a couple days. Picked up more current sets and one not so current in a run to TRU this week. The Senate Commandos box was just sitting out for 5 bucks. Happens from time to time. Either it was found in the warehouse or dome nutter returned it demanding money do the manager caves to just get them out of the store. I've witnessed this.

A nice (and expensive) haul today from Lego Shop in Milton Keynes:

I got the #5005205 VIP Keychain with the help of a friend! :)

@SeanTheCollector Hey can you tell me what that small City product is? Also, why does your packaging not have the printed piece info on it. Is that common on some styles of packaging?

@blogzilly The City set is #40170 Build My City Accessory Set which I picked up after seeing @CapnRex101's review. And as @oldtodd33 alluded to, most (but not all) european sets exclude piece counts and set titles.

I just opened a new Ninjago Movie display case (£29.99 from Amazon) not listed in brickset yet! Very happy since it uses 6 real lego 8x16 plates, and is easily large enough to display 20 minifigs! :)

Constrast this to the Batman Movie #5005209 Minifigure Display Case which only holds 16!

Site visit to a job in London took me very close to Leicester Sq, seemed rude not to pop in.....

....luckily I keep the current calendar vouchers in my wallet and the store were kind enough to honour three of them. Got passport and a couple of stamps in it, despite having no friend with me I got the Friends storage box and because I hadn't picked it up in March i got the Birthday card as well. Grabbed a "pick a model" Guardsman too, not seen this around at all, but it looked cool and my daughter soon built it while I made dinner last night. I'm not collecting TLNM CMFs (famous last words) but wanted N-Pop girl for her as well. The staff were playing guess the figure downstairs and said there were none there.  A lucky squeeze (oh-er missus) of the first bag I saw upstairs netted us one.

@SirBrickalotOfLego Yeah I've wanted this for a while now. I picked up the first Sail Barge early in my LEGO Resurgence in late 2015. I got it used so this may have been part of the reason but it fell apart a LOT. And the design was clunky. But this one just seems more streamlined. And likely more sturdy.

Agree. They're both good. Lots of emotional attachments can cloud the evaluation of a set.
  • blogzillyblogzilly Member Posts: 598
Well I'll only know for sure after I've built this one. I gave the first one to my older son. It's scattered and gone now. Doubt it could ever be re-assembled, he doesn't keep track of his stuff, not his style.

The Justice League Flying Fox which I git in Debenhams for €90 , no sale just marked at that price. It's  €119.99 from s@h so happy to get 25% off a 2 week old set!

Does anyone else feel proud when they finish of buying their wants from a theme for the year? With some s@h orders yesterday I completed the marvel sets I wanted for this year ( less the hulk set crap,  a polybag and deadpool duck I have no interest in.) Just the Justice League Flash set I need now for my dc wants. Debenhams had it at €35 (30% off) but it was out of stock when I got there.

I'm in two minds about the ninjago movie sets. I have Lloyd's dragon, the bounty and the smallest two sets. The shark and such figs don't interest me so there's really no need for me to purchase the other sets (except maybe the city sometime next year) and yet I keep staring at them!

While I have cleared a backlog of to be bought sets, I now have an even bigger backlog of to be built sets...... it's a vicious circle!

    well it turned up today.
it was a returned set. why was it returned you ask.
it got the "it's a box let's slap a shipping label on it and send it as is. there is no need to place it in a real shipping box to ship it." treatment.
in return it was sent back to Amazon with a note on the shipping label i can Just about read with out pulling off a blank shipping label over the top of it. and a return label slapped on it to add to the mess. the note said "WHY STICK A LABEL ON BOX WHICH IS A GIFT???. PACKER SHOULD BE IN SHAME" this is on the shipping Label and can read the Post code of that Label to. as well as the town "Westcliff-on-sea, Essex" i also have a house number and a street name. the only thing missing is the name of the man or woman. it was sent to. there is a blank shipping label over the top of that label but it dont stop you from seeing under it. or pulling said label off again.
the set had been opened, at both end's there is Brown tape on one end. that is not holding anything closed. there is ripped off lego open lego tabs that lego use to close the box at the other end. and both ends have been taped closed with normal clear tape.
the shipping label shows that some one tried to remove it. but only peeled off the box art.  that is more writing on the Brown tape that is quite hard to make out, but i think it said "had to open to put in return paper" it is hard to read as most of it rubbed off. and only the mark of the pen can be seen. the only part still showing are "___ to op__ to ___ in r_____ _____" i can only make out what it said from the indent the pen left.  the box has had a bat-a-ring (?) (yep i can not find the right spelling for that word.) with dents and scuff mark on the corners and edges. but the contents (aka the lego set itself) are all there and it makes a find looking model. the box on the other hand? well it still a box but it look's a mess.

It's still an awesome Set. and looks grate on my table.
if i can work out a way to add the building to my Ninjago Temple of Airjitzu display it would fit in well.

    ^ battering I believe.

Nice - if they sent me a "label on outside of box" and I could return it, I would do exactly the same. Why waste a box? Amazon can then be absolutely sure noone sane will want to buy it. The fact that it was a gift just makes it worse indeed.

Funny you can follow such things when you finally receive it yourself. Shame on Amazon though for leaking private info of customers.
