#40180 Bricktober

margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
I was able to purchase some Bricktober theaters at TRU tonight #40180. They were out for sale ($19.99). They came up as not available for sale until October but the manager overrode it.

^My hunch is the manager was thinking why give something away for free when you can sell it. After all, it is TRU.
  • margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
That plus everyone there recognizes me and they treat me really well. (I think they think I'm a nutter, crazy Lego lady)

Maybe better to pay 20 bucks for it appose to paying 15% markup on a set to get it for free

Interestingly these have only been given a RRP of $14.99 ($13.07USD) in Australia, and were up for sale earlier this afternoon on the TRU AU website http://www.toysrus.com.au/lego-toysrus-exclusive/

The links to the individual item descriptions (where you add them to your cart) have since been removed so you can't order them ATM. Maybe they realised that they aren't suppose to be listed until the 1st.

I managed to get an order for all 4 in before they took them down, and have an order confirmation, so hopefully they come through. I did have to pay $10 postage but that still works out at only $17.50 each.

I found 40180 for sale at TRU. I bought 2 and they discovered that they were not supposed to be out until 5 Oct and pulled the rest from the shelf (there were 10 total). Price was 19.99. Not sure if the sets will just be for sale or given away with purchase. Anybody know?
  • ravendragonwingravendragonwing Member Posts: 193
Thanks for the info @bsiu922, I was able to grab one yesterday, but they pulled them from the shelves because the start date is Oct 5th. The stores do not have any info on the event, and I tried calling customer service and they were clueless as well. Anyone have any idea how much I have to spend to get these sets?
  • ecmo47ecmo47 Member Posts: 2,101
This showed up today on the back of the catalog. Set is free with purcahse of $75.00 or more.

Yuck! That is steep! Spend $300 to get 4 "free" sets. I think I will pass.
  • ecmo47ecmo47 Member Posts: 2,101
^Pretty much follows what Lego.com does. Since it's a really nice bunch of sets, I think that this is a decent deal. I would expect the aftermarket will sell them for 35-50 each (and they already are on ebay) so if you can find some sets that are selling at MSRP your getting a nice bonus.
  • bsiu922bsiu922 Member Posts: 439
I think i rather pay $20 set instead of pay $75 to get it for free. I don't have $300 worth of Lego set to buy at TRU. Lego store, may be

Woohoo! TRU by work just called. They are holding a week 1 Bricktober set for me to pick up on Monday since I will be at BrickCon this weekend. *happy dance*

they have the 40180? I plan to swing by today but I doubt they will sell it anyway
  • Russell844Russell844 Member Posts: 2,392
The guy specifically said they will be available on Sunday with $75 minimum purchase. I asked if I could get it early and he said no. I assume it is #40180. I didn't ask.

Basta: How were you able to order all 4? Did TRU goof and have them on the website or did you find them on ebay?

Yeah, in Australia on Monday night TRU (I assume by accident) had all 4 available to purchase online for a few hours. I managed to get an order in before they were pulled.

On Tuesday night the offer (Free with $100 spend) became active. At this point you could only get 1 of the 4.

The amazing thing about this is that the RRP is set $14.99AUD vs. the US price of $19.99, not often that happens :P

I've gotten lucky twice with these. Found the cinema at one store, and after it wouldn't ring up, the manager let me buy it but scanned a $19.99 Technic set in its place. That was two weeks ago. Today I found the pizza place, and after it wouldn't scan, the cashier just overrode it and sold it to me.

I wonder, though, they may be on the shelves early, but I get the feeling that they will also be available to purchase for $19.99 in addition to being free with $75 purchase. Otherwise, why the shelf tags and why would it ring up for an amount at all in the first place?
  • matticus_bricksmatticus_bricks Member Posts: 651
Well, I just went to TRU and found five Pizza Places huddled on a low shelf in the LEGO section and decided to buy two. The cashier called a (very grumpy) manager over who proceeded to tell me that these were not to be sold until October 12th. Really frustrating, but then I noticed a new box of Series 12 Minifigs behind the customer service desk and asked the cashier if I could buy those. She was very polite and brought them over for me.

Oh well, it's probably for the better that I couldn't get the set, as I still feel it's a really poor value, no matter how exclusive.
  • margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
Apparently there are not going to be many of these in store. My TRU only got 10-15 for each week.
  • scotty12scotty12 Member Posts: 831
I haven't check my TRU but it sounds similar to what happened last year with the Bricktober exlusive at TRU. My TRU only got 10-15 of each set last year. The retro 5 minifigure set was given away with a $60 purchase...but my local store hardly sells any, so they're then put on the shelves for $19.99 each. Last time I checked, those 'exclusive' sets don't bring back/resell for the $19.99 someone paid for them. Maybe this year will be different, but I'm skeptical.
  • margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
Yes, 10-15 per store is exactly what my TRU got in this year. They will be gone each Sunday.
  • pharmjodpharmjod Member Posts: 2,916
I had thought I might try to get them with purchase, but I'm not even going to bother if they have that few. I don't think I can make it every Sunday. Would much rather pay $19.99 directly for them and be done TBH.
  • legogallegogal Member Posts: 754
My TRU inCary, NC, had the theater on the shelf Monday, but would not sell me one when the register said not for sale til the fifth. Ugh! So I may stop in early Sunday and see what the deal is, but someone probably will have bought all of them by then. What the heck! If you have to have them, ordering online at midnight Saturday may be the way to go.

Oooops! Just checked the TRU catalog that came by mail, and it says that these little sets are available in the stores ONLY and that they are limited to one per customer. OUCH! The catalog also says that the stores open at 8AM on the fifth, this Sunday. So start yer engines, drivers! (NOTE: Also on the cover of that catalog was a coupon expiring 10/28 I believe... good for one item at 25 percent off with a TRU credit card or 20 percent without that card, and an exclusion for all LEGO construction sets, whatever that means. So if you need to buy a carseat or something else that is required by law and is mucho expensive, pull out that coupon and follow me to the store. I am going for a Britax car seat for my new granddaughter.)
  • margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
Toy wiz is selling them for 29.99. Not sure where they are getting them from.
  • prevereprevere Member Posts: 2,923
I think $30 is about right long-term for these. Initial hype and interest that fades pretty quickly.
  • margotmargot Member Posts: 2,308
My store had 4 of them behind the counter this afternoon so they aren't going all that fast. They also have zero signs up about Bricktober which may partially account for that.

I was in 2 Long Island stores today, one had signs every 2 feet and the other had no signs at all. They both had about 25-30 copies available.

Interestingly, they wouldn't sell me the 40180 set outright but they were fine with me purchasing a $75+ set to get the promo for free and then promptly returning the original set minus $16.35 (+ tax) without the promo. Ended up with quantity 6.

    What?

You saying that you purchased multiple sales and then returned the original set and kept the promo?

I didn't see any signs at my TRU in Cary, NC, this morning. And the 40180 sets were all behind the customer service desk; you had to ask for one. I made three separate purchases to collect three of them because two are promised to others who could not be there. They seemed to have 20 or so of them lying there.

The coolest thing was that after I noticed there were no CMS out, they opened a new box of Series 12, and I found the eleven I wanted AND received the bonus set. I like the wizard, lavender queen, gamer, female warrior, jester, bow lady, pizza guy, rock star, pig, mermaid, and teddy bear girl. The wizard, jester and lavender queen are my three most favorite ones. These are cool designs IMHO.

The other two purchases resulting in the Brictober sets were composed of new Friends' sets that I had been waiting to buy until this month. Usually I pick these up at the LEGO store, but the Bricktober sets look too enticing this month and TRU prices were the same on Friends sets.

Yes.. at the the suggestion of the employees who wouldn't (maybe couldn't?) just ring me up for the promo sets alone.

Whether an employee rings up the set alone or not is one matter, but the cash register will ring up the set and sell for $19.99 outright, no need to purchase anything thankfully.

If I'm not mistaken, this is different than in the past, where the promos would not ring up alone.

Technically it's one set per household (or person?), so shouldn't be allowed to make multiple purchases, but I'm sure employees break that rule, too.

Love these sets (also have the pizza place). Look forward to the last two.

I am an unapologetic reseller but it is crap like this that is what truly ends up ruining things for everyone. Sorry, but that was just shady whether they allowed it or not.

So, unless I'm missing something, it's cheaper to buy a $75 set to get the #40180 free set, then return the $75 set and pay $16.35 + tax, rather than just paying $19.99 + tax for the set.
  • pcironepcirone Member Posts: 346
@scotty12 I couldn't understand it either, but that's the way it rang up. I would have preferred to pay the $19.99 and just be done with it but this is the way they wanted me to do it.

I'm in Australia, and was able to pick up one of each at my local store last week. Over here, the Bricktober catalogue started on 1st (not 5th, like USA), so I just went in on the first day of the promotion and asked if I could buy them outright (like Basta said, they're advertised as valued at $14.99 (incl. tax) over here, which is odd, compared to US at $19.99), so they kindly went out the back and got them for me and scanned them through the register with no problems. :-D

Apparently that store is now limiting them to one per person (and has sold out of 40183 - Town Hall), so I guess I just got lucky by going in early, before they'd sorted out a proper system/limit.
  • kim43235kim43235 Member Posts: 165
My local store has #9396 Technic Helicopter for $99.99. I think that would be worth while to purchase to get these promotion sets as you can flip it right away due to its EOL.

I went to my local TRU today. I had a 20% off coupon and decided to drink the Kool-aid and get the Bricktober sets. They had two sets on the shelf the theater and the fire station. I grabbed both and the manager walked by and asked if I needed help and I asked if he had the other two sets. He went to check and came back and said he was sorry but couldn't sell me the fire station. He said he felt bad and would make it up on another set. I have had my eye on the new cargo train #60052 so I grabbed it and we walked to the check out and he told the cashier to take $40 off....Wow....then I stacked the coupon onto It. Plus he said he would hold one of each of the next sets for me in his office so I don't miss out on them.

Sorry for the long post but when a store goes out of its way to make a customer happy it's worth posting.
