It will be interesting to see what the mirror piece is like. Based on the appearance of the outer wall and the way it looks to be "floating" under the plates with rails, it might not have any connection points on the back.

I'm really hoping those window pieces are printed. From the photo that shows them closest, it looks like they are. But it could just be that someone is very adept at applying transparent stickers.

Ok. So, now we know the buildings are from the Prohibition Era. I would have never guessed that from just the pictures. What really threw me off was the newspaper vending machine. This still throws me off a bit seeing that the Prohibition Era was in the 1920's and early 30's, but the newspaper vending machine wasn't made until the late 1940's.

I started buying the modulars since GG and now have 7. This will be the first time when I take advantage of an early VIP release to buy a set. Jamie knocked this one out of the park. The integration of two different buildings to build a story is outstanding. You can also tell that our surveys really do make it to TLG by witnessing the detail in the interiors the past two modulars. Just another fantastic set I can't wait to play with my kids.

Speaking of my kids, 3 and 6yo, I take note of which modulars they play with the most. Here's the ranking:

    1. PR
    2. PS
    3. FB
    4. TH
    5. PC
    6. GG
    7. GE

I'm thinking there will be a new #1 come January.

Beyond what has already been mentioned: Just because one of the modulars is in a given time period doesn't mean the others also are.

Yes, really liking the background story and all the detail that has gone into this set. The sets really are getting better with each new one, and this simply makes me wonder what will the next one bring...

So, The Lego Movie which happens to have humans and Lego in the same universe is irrelevant and coincidental. Giving away a Lego movie poster sticker with purchase of the Palace Cinema was also purely coincidental as well. I'm not trying to stir the pot, but saying that Lego "universe" has nothing to do with the human "universe" is a cop out.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
All the discussion about the Research Institute and why it was created was had EVERYTHING to do with our society. I suppose that set was irrelevant and coincidental as well ;)

My point is, why try to fit the modular sets into any given time period?
Sure, the buildings may have architectural similarities to certain real world ones from specific eras, but the sets themselves can, & are, meant to be used together in any manner that the user's imagination chooses.

Ok. Very well. Now on to an even more controversial topic. I personally don't consider the Market Street as part of the Modular building theme, but Jamie mentioned that DO was the 10th Modular Building in the series, so I guess that he considers MS part of the line.

I think the perception of most people is that the MS was not very attractive, not part of the Modular line or both. It was only $89.99 and it didn't have the same "bang for the buck" as CC and GG did st that time.

Well LEGO did release a mini modular building with the Mini Moudlars set so LEGO considers Market Street as a modular building and today Jaime said the Detective Office is their tenth modular building.

I've changed my mind. I went back to look through my Lego catalogs to see how MS was first introduced and marketed.

In my Spring 2007 catalog, CC was first introduced and described as a modular construction set.

In Summer 2007 catalog, MS appeared on the opposite page of CC, and described a a modular construction set designed by a LEGO fan (Factory theme). Also, a picture is shown showing both CC and MS combined with a caption, "Combine Cafe Corner and Market Street for an amazing street layout!" Also, in the MS description, it states, "The modular construction allows you to put it together in different ways and to enlarge the LEGO neighborhood as your collection grow!"

In Early Spring 2008 catalog, GG first appeared and showed a street layout picture with CC, MS and CG combined. MS last appearance was in the the January 2009 catalog.

In the Summer 2009 catalog, only CC and GG appeared with no combined street layout picture.

In Fall 2009 catalog, FB was introduced and a street layout picture showing CC, GG and FB - with no MS.

So, now I'm convinced that MS has allows been part of the modular building line even though it was first introduced under the Factory theme. If it wasn't for the wording and pictures showing both CC and MS together when MS was first introduced, then I might of thought differently.

Maybe I am in the minority, but I think MS is really a good looking set and the color scheme alone was nice. Also remember when it was made; not as many special parts as now. The detail on the outside is great. The lay out of the floor plan is a bit messed up and not furnished. At the end of the day though it will be on my block of Mods when built.

The 89.99 USD was why people have to pay a ton to get one now. They just did not sell well at the time and I do not believe ever sold anywhere but at LEGO as well. Couple that with it not being on sale and just disappearing one day means really hard to find.
Heck it is only easy to find as it is now because of b'linking it with incorrect parts.
If LEGO did another set like MS today it would likely cost around 120 USD, which I think people would still say 'Im not buying that for 120 USD, I can get a whole mod for 159.95 USD'
  • LegogeekLegogeek Member Posts: 714
The only reason I don't have MS is because it retired before I started buying the modulars. Up until then I had held of with the modulars on the grounds that 'I'm not going to pay that kind of money for LEGO' ~ Well, that has changed... LOL

As a completist, I'm sorry I don't have MS... but I'm glad to have whatever I do have.

No surprises there — he did include it in the Mini-Modulars set, after all.

I have always considered it a part of the series. It doesn't meet all the standards, but at that point nothing had even been established as standard since there had only been one Modular Building set, and nobody could say for sure what the next one would change and what it would keep the same! And it was released with LEGO Factory branding, but you can't define a series strictly in terms of its branding, particularly now that the branding for the series has changed from no theme at all to Creator Expert.

It's hardly the only series that has undergone a major branding change — the Designer Sets, LEGO Creator, and LEGO Technic were once all separate themes under the Make & Create umbrella. The designer sets were what we now think of as LEGO Creator, while from its birth until 2006 the Creator theme was more akin to Bricks & More or Juniors: basic brick buckets and building sets aimed at young builders ages four and up. In 2006, the LEGO Creator brand quietly absorbed the entire designer sets theme (note how the page says "Creator" but the URL still says "designer"), including some sets like #4884, #4886, and #4888 that had been released as Designer Sets back when Creator was a separate entity! Meanwhile the previous LEGO Creator sets were rebranded as LEGO Creative Building (again, note the header and URL discrepancy), and the "Designer Sets" branding disappeared entirely!

In this photo, the mirror reflects all the way to its edge. If it were a sticker, I think we'd be able to see the edge of the piece it was applied to. Also, in the video Jamie mentioned it was the first time they've done a mirror like this.

As for the windows, I don't see anything that suggests they are stickers. They very well could be, but there are no signs of edges and I don't see any imperfections in the surfaces. They also seem to have the same reflectivity and transparency as the blank windows; I think a sticker would make them ever so slightly less reflective and more opaque.

I guess we'll find out in about a month, when the early reviews appear.

Cookie prohibition - wink, wink, nudge, nudge.. cute twist to do an end around LEGO standards. Maybe they can make a "Community Center for Thankfulness to a Higher Power" some time for the modular line. They could use "The Duck" ala the Simpson's LEGO episode.

For me, I never liked Market Street when compared to the other modulars. That is the only set that I REMOVED from my collection. Yet, Haunted House is setup next to all the other modulars. That is what is so great about LEGO: everything is customizable, regardless of how much older sets may fetch on eBay! :)

Jamie did say 10th modular "building" rather than set. So I can imagine that he has counted both of the buildings in PS and that my modular collection will still be complete without MS ;)

Any correlations or similarities to the Human universe are just coincidence.
I'd go a little further and say correlations and similarities to the real universe are intentional references, so they will tie the Lego world to our world, but as references they don't have to be accurate or even necessarily logical, and they definitely don't have to all work together.
Seeing them as references, intentional nods to cultural motifs and the like, clears up all the issues on that one for me, maybe that's just me though. :)

The windows did look printed on. I didn't notice any glass in the rounded windows, but I didn't study it that closely.

I like the play features included, although I just look at my modulars. I don't play with them. But my daughter will get a kick out of this I'm sure.

The overall design is neat. I still don't love the mish-mash of colors, but I'm sure I'll get over it.

I like having some new prints on figures. And it will be nice to see the 1x1 round stud with hole in black. I've only seen it in white and dark red. Black will be most useful as well.

And that does look like the Helicarrier. Which was already "confirmed" via that set list that was posted weeks ago. So I guess they have the video ready to go for when it becomes available.
  • PlellPlell Member Posts: 192
The windows are definitely printed, and though I don't know exactly what piece the mirror is, it's not a sticker either. You can tell by zooming in on the parts inventory on the box picture.
  • matticus_bricksmatticus_bricks Member Posts: 651
I think whoever wrote that storyline was eating too many "cookies" if you know what I mean. ;) But seriously, the whole thing about secret passage ways to smuggle the cookies is absolutely mind blowing. It's so exciting to see that they're adding stories to these modulars. Last year, there was a marriage proposal, this year it's cookie smuggling, I can't even imagine what they'll do next year. A bank that's actually a front for an animal suit guy hideout?

That's definitely a UCS Helicarrier. Can't wait to see it! I hope it includes some exclusive Minifigs as a bonus, like with the Tumbler.
