Identify This Piece

So I got this piece from a friend's dad back in 1986 and he said it was from a set he played with as a boy. So it is probably from the 60's. I have never seen a piece like it before and cannot find it anywhere. "Lego" is stamped on the studs, and there is a "Pat. Pend." and an "A-6" stamped on the bottom. My best guess is that it was used as some sort of trailer hitch. Does anyone know, what set it came from?

Thanks, I am just getting back into the Lego scene as my son becomes interested and I have yet to figure out all of the online options. That site looks like a great resource.

Yeah, I've seen a few like that. It is a trailer hitch primarily, used in sets from the 60's.
